As a musician who has been around "tortured" musicians for years, if you call them that. It really comes down to, this is why they play music and write the songs they do. They socially don't fit into the everyday crowds and norms of society. They come off weird and awkward because their minds don't observe and take the world in like other non-musical people. It's actually very normal, why you see addiction along with that lifestyle, which becomes worse with fame. Because suddenly everyone adores and wants you, yet in your head you think about your life before that, when you were the outcast. Trust me, I understand these guys. I lost 3 good friends who were as talented as him. There will always be those tortured artists. Even ones yet to be born yet. Think about that. It gets sad, but these are the people who make the soundtracks to your life.

I get why those guys don't want to work with him, especially since he constantly slags on Silverchair. His recent "career" has been about trying to be different from Silverchair and he's pissed that he hasn't had as much success as he did while in that band. His ego just won't let him accept it. He says he had to leave because he didn't want to end up like "other people." What about playing in Silverchair would cause him to end up a certain way? That's on him to choose. If he's making bad decisions he'll make them whether he's in Silverchair or solo. And that whole "Silverchair is like childhood trauma" thing, please. Give me a break.

For Ben and Chris, Silverchair was foundational to their identity and it was their creative space too. Dan may have written much of their music, but the sound, shape and expression came from every band member. When Dan made the decision to leave Silverchair, their role as band members no longer existed. That’s a tough transition to make. Tough when Daniel keeps playing, and even now makes an exhibition about the band…but it’s headlined by a massive pic of him. I have loved the band, but I feel for Ben and Chris as their identity within the band seems to be something they’re no longer able to control.

He has one of the most beautiful voices. It's so sad to hear of his struggles. There is so much pain in his music that is expressed by the beauty of his voice!

Being famous as a kid is a massive curse that few make it out of. They usually spend the rest of their lives trying to recover. He seems so broken.

Wow.. That was some interview. Had not seen an interview with Daniel Johns in as many years. I have experienced anxiety and depression for about 30 years now. So I relate to him. But just for Daniel Johns to be so open in this chat. That's a vulnerable place. Kudos to him. Loved what he said.. And I largely understood/related to his pain and the beauty of things. He has a lot of style.

Daniel has such a beautiful heart and soul. He leaves a very big impact on those who love him. I can relate to having a chaotic brain and living in anxiety. It's hard and it can be very lonely. I hope he finds peace and calm.

Great interview. I find it so easy to admire DJ yet dont look at him as a roll model... His beautiful empathy for music and humanity makes him a target for self destruction. Just stay in the calm moment brother. 👊

Daniel, Silverchair songs saved my life. It helped me so so much to process and feel so many feelings that I didn't even knew existed inside me, coming from a very unstable household and seeing a lot of domestic violence at a very young age. I will always love Silverchair's music and I hope that one day you can truly feel at peace.

A person with trauma, anxiety, depression and alot of the same ups and downs, to be able to express yourself in a beautiful and creative way all these years, is your real self. What else could you add to an interview. Your experiences are from the soul. Thus is your life. Thank you so much for all of the years sharing yourself with us all. Much Love

Daniel Johns is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. I can't thank him enough for his contribution and enrichment to my life as I grew up listening to Silverchair. I also really liked his work with The Dissociatives. He has made profoundly beautiful music over the course of his life and I just hope he's doing well.

Weeks before their big breakthrough I worked as a stagehand on lowlands in Holland. A young boy stood shivering from the cold backstage waiting to perform. I offered him my crew sweater and he thanked me almost shy. 10 minutes later he jumped on the small stage and they played really well. Shocked, the boy could make so much noise. Young girls in front passing out. Strange life. A lot happened since then I see.

Daniel is so brave We all carry our scars, some scars are bigger than others. He is so talented and I wish him the very best I'm very dissapointed with his old band mates not accepting the offer to collaborate on a song certainly shows the difference between Daniels growth and that they're left stunted in the past. Keep moving forward Daniel Your growth is truly inspiring. Sending love and strength from someone that's been deep to the bottom after an accident but now sitting on top of the world grateful to be here in all the simple beauty that surrounds us every day My inside scars now mostly healed my outside scars I carry with pride. Be kind to yourself

It would be good to give the right of reply to Ben Gillies... Another tip, activate the automatic subtitles, many fans in Brazil of Daniel Johns would like to see this content but don't understand English.

Man......I've always so worried about Daniel. :/ He always seems SO mentally fragile and sensitive. It's what gave his music such tremendous cathartic potency, but boy did it wreck his life. It's so sad really. I just want the poor guy to be ok....to feel healthy and free and hopeful. Looking back on it, Paul Mac was the best thing that ever happened to Daniel, both musically and personally. Because it seems the only time Daniel was truly happy as a person was maybe from 2001 to 2007....save for that one, but substantial, lost year from the reactive arthritis. Looking back, it seems like he was truly happy and creatively exuberant during the creation of Diorama, the whole Dissociative era, and the making of Young Modern. Before that was a lot of darkness....from the insane impact of fame, the eating disorder, the depression and antidepressants. And then after 2007, came the self-medicating with alcohol and the constant tabloid drama. I'd love more music from Daniel.....but only if he's in a truly good place personally. I think Paul Mac should be thanked....for genuinely saving Dan's life 2 decades ago....and bringing him out of the fog of anxiety and depression. That resulted in Diorama, the Dissos album, and Young Modern.....3 masterpieces of music that you can tell were made by someone in love with creativity. I just hope Daniel can find that feeling again....some sort of peace and hope. I'm always worried I'm gonna wake up one day to a notification that Daniel overdosed or worse... And needless to say, that would shatter me. He deserves a happy life.....especially given all the joy and inspiration he's brought to me and millions others like me.

Daniel is a musical genius and it´s sad to see his suffering. Paul Mac was very supportive of Daniel, but the reason for Daniel's well-being during those years was Natalie Imbruglia. Since the dissolution of his marriage, Daniel has lost his way. That's why you have noticed that 2007 was Daniel's last good year, after that Paul was still around, but Natalie wasn´t. I hope Daniel finds peace :(

I have been a fan os Silverchair since 1999 and all my life I have seen that Daniel Johns. However, I really really really appreciate the opportunity to see this Daniel Johns right here. The human being, like anyone else, with strengths and weaknesses, not afraid of speaking out and showing his true-self. I have come to admire the person of Daniel Johns a lot in the past few years.
