Dexos is just a spec that GM came up with. They get a kickback on all sold wearing the Dexos label. The grade is the most important you need to adhere to. "Emissions and low speed pre-ignition reduction" I can read that on the label of any oil with the dexos label...
@thangknowa32888 ай бұрын
Best explanation of Dexos you will find on the web. More and more is expected of oil used in today's engines. They failed to mention new seal conditioners in Dexos. Fully backward compatible, and helps with sooting in direct injected engines that never get a fuel cleaning across the intake valves. Reduced air carried helps with hydraulic needs as well as lubrication. Win-win!

The only thing dexos does it put money in GMs pocket by oil producers having to pay them to put the logo on their bottle. I guess GM figured if you can’t make money by making decent car, come up with some BS and make everyone to pay for it

If e.g. your Chevy 5.3 consumes oil try a different brand and maybe go to a 10W30 even if it has no Dexos label. The MOST important thing is to reduce your oil consumption to 1 or 2mm on the dipstick at the 4000 mile oil change interval. Oil burned will clog your piston rings and place carbon deposits everywhere including your catalytic converter thus reducing its life.

Dexos1 gen 1, 2, and 3. Makes a difference. If you have a late model dexos1 gen 2 or 3 you better look up GM and find out what oils meet the spec and what oils don't. I was surprised there weren't any Valvoline conventional or blends that meet the specs. I don't really care for Valvoline conventional. I've never bought a car that had been serviced with Valvoline that didn't have a lot of upper valve train noise. Friend with a Jeep liberty used Valvoline and by 100,000 miles was seeing the oil light. He said it was always full. I told him to switch to synthetic and he did and then he stopped seeing the oil light flickering. Valvoline synthetic is good stuff but I wouldn't use anything less in formerly Ashland oil DBA Valvoline and now Aramco owned. Noack, HTHS, 100c test, 40c test, CCS and MRV usually tell what I want to know pretty quickly. The chemicals in oil like boron could actually be either a dispersant (keeps soot from clinging to the engine and keeps it in solution) or it could be an antiwear agent. Just depends on the chemical formula. Calcium could be a detergent and could be antiwear. Moly is a great EP agent but it's also why some oils turn black or darker quicker... doesn't mean the oil is excessively dirty. Less zddp is not good. More zddp can be just as detrimental depending on the engine. Flat cam needs more zddp. Roller cam doesn't need as much. I ceased believing oil labels and claims years ago. It's all in how they word things. 6x better wear protection might not be as big a deal as you think. 1.4x cleaner might not be as clean as 45% cleaner. Biggest thing is don't believe you know more than the engine engineer's and the oil engineer's. Because you don't. Nope, wasn't because they had wear in the valve train. It was dirt, carbon, soot. I'd find some Castrol GTX oil and some Rislone and do short changes until it stopped making noise and then just use an oil that some people with less objectivity loved to hate. I know this so much better than most. There's just no way to explain it to people who lack objectivity. It's like everything else I try to explain. Waste of my time to try to teach or reach them but for everyone else that's why I keep teaching.

Petroleum Service Company - PSC @4:30 there is a formal GM dexos1 gen2 discussion on KZbin. It's mentioned that the gen2 was partly developed for a specific drive pattern in a specific GM turbo engine to eliminate particle buildup internally to the turbo system, and additionally there is a slight increase in fuel economy.

Can you use a Dexos 2 oil in a GM engine that specifies Dexos 1?
@JRCW8924 жыл бұрын
Since March 2017, Dexos 2 (based on ACEA C3) is no longer allowed for small gasoline turbocharged engines because of LSPI problems. Those engines MUST use Dexos 1 gen2. But if you have an atmospheric gasoline engine or a diesel engine, you can keep using Dexos 2. If you use Dexos 2 or ACEA C3 in a small turbocharged gasoline engine you can get severe damage because of LSPI.
