@@OrdoAbChao-kg5rf so many women who frontlined this movement are also abusers. I know this from personal experience. They didn't send me a weird dm either. A few of them touched me when I didn't consent to being touched and one even called me a pussy (before all this cancel bullshit) for telling her I usually ask women if I can kiss them before I went in for it. Her excuse was "dude I was younger and didn't know any better back then" like dude no you were already an adult. What kind of backwards bullshit is that? Let's take away someone's livelihood for making YOU feel uncomfortable but when YOU do something bad it's just because your mind was in a different place at the time? With all that said, I do believe men are more perverted. I'm not going to say more abusive because women can get away with punching you square in the mouth (another thing I know from experience) just we aren't allowed to talk about those things because then we are "pussies" Just seems like this video caters to people who want to be victims. I've been sexually abused, as a child, not a 16 17 or 18 year old. Nobody cared. Have been jumped on 2 occasions (if you ask me, that's assault on the top tier) nobody cared Been cheated on and taken advantage of. The girl who did this to me gave me the clap and after she was thrown out of her home and I made the decision to get us an apartment, things didn't work out because I was the problem and according to her friends, she had to put up with a lot from me. What? Drinking? Sorry I couldn't cope with the fact you were fucking the entire town and getting a round of applause for it. 2020 or 2021 wasn't "the gift that keeps giving" it was too many people stuck at home that wanted to be apart of something. I remember me and my band played a show one time at Burger Records for our EP release. We all got the vibe they didn't like us for some reason. So we obviously were not even invited to the back room. I just remember they had this strange older guy who seemed like some kind of tweaker who was working there. I remember he passed out during our show. Weird dude but whatever. Besides that there was another weird thing I remember. After the show when we were loading up our equipment we were talking casually to one another about the show and what not, then one of their staff came to us and told us to be quiet because there is a church next door having mass. And I just thought "wtf, there's a church next door that can't be disturbed by people talking outside in a normal tone voice but yet they have shows daily here?" lol. It didn't make any sense at all haha. Such a weird place. I had no idea how much more creepy it was than I had already believed.

Hi May, Sexual harassment exists everywhere! I was a vocalist in Las Vegas back in the 90's and early 2000's. The great casting couch is still in existance. I worked for an agent who preyed on young females. He would promise them work in exchange for sexual favors. I knew of band leaders who would do the same thing to females who really wanted to be in bands. This also happened to me on quite a few occasions. I really wanted to be in the business but I would never stoop that low. I'm not going to judge another person for doing it but that was not the roil for me. I am glad that people are starting to be held accountable for their actions. It's no longer OK to sweep it under the rug. I hope that people will think twice before trying to take advantage of another human being.

I always knew something was off about the scene when I was like 19 or so. I’m 24 now and hearing about The Growlers and The Buttertones getting accused is really not surprising to me. I was never the type to get stuck in a scene because I listen to all kinds of music and I have my own style but some of the people I grew up with in high school stayed in that SoCal garage rock scene (which is the best tag for this scene btw I always just called it beach goth or whatever) and they never grew out of it. I’m sorry to say it like that but I mean how many rock bands that all sound the same are you gonna listen to until you just get sick of it? Anyway I ran into this girl I use to talk to and when I asked her how she was, she was starting this band and they got a spot to play in some little show Burger was putting together at the Bootleg or one of those tiny venues that’s popular with their demographic. Of course I said I would be there to check it out and support :) when the day of the show got closer, they canceled. I hit her up and asked what happened and she said she’d rather not talk about it. Later I ran into her friend and her friend said that she felt super uncomfortable with the entire scene her and her band were getting into. Apparently some dude from one of the bands was hitting on her sister like HARD and she was only 16. He knew that but proceeded to flirt anyway. And some other things occurred which I’m gonna try not to exploit so much of her experience. But anyway point is, the instincts that I had in my early college years that something was weird about this scene were on point. And seeing the downfall of burger and their bands just further cements my instincts were right lol. Good riddance too.

Also would like to say that it seems this scene had a lot of "Paternos" and "Sanduskys" running around. The former like Sean turning a blind eye because he had a cool job and didn't want to piss off his friends. The latter of course being sickos who are making excuses by saying they were victims with ptsd once too. I assumed since this was in the western part of the country and was seemingly friendly to female bands with burger a go go festivals that this was a scene similar to K records or Kill rock stars. Far from it! I had no idea. I read a 2012 Vice interview today with Lee and Sean where they were joking about teen girls and sex. My takeway is that it's important moving forward to do due diligence that has anything to do with men in entertainment even as a fan. It's sad that it's come to this, but I only listen to female bands on female labels.

Burger was just the watered down “psyche surf cutey pie” garbage part of Orange County aimed at teenagers. There are a lot of normal bands playing rock, metal, punk, hip hop and stuff that don’t target young people. All ages shows used to be cool. It’s a shame. Not saying that there aren’t predators in every scene or every walk of life for that matter but the Burger thing seemed like it was not even about the music but the life style. I feel bad for some of our buddies who are being lumped in with this because they signed with Burger. Thank you for bravely posting your story. The hookup scene is so messed up. It’s all about love and friendship with our group of friends. If I saw someone getting assaulted at one of our shows or parties, the assaulter would be permanently banned. I wonder what really happened but it’s not my business & we’ll never really know. Sucks that people can be evil. I know many jerks have used people in music. But thankfully many people still have good memories of that time period with good music. I shall do my best to separate the human beings from the art. In all of history I’m sure almost all artists have secrets that if we connected to the music … we’d never be able to listen to music again lol. There will always be evil people with power. The people in burger who abused their power are on the lower end of power but had an easy source of something they wanted. I’m sure they already had stuff, but they got power hungry or something. Idk how people can be like that. Is it how they were raised? Weren’t they taught respect? Was it the social differences and educations? Why do people have kids if they’re not going to raise them right? It’s not hard respecting others like wtf. I don’t know a single kid who was not taught to respect others & also about the dangers of people who want to abuse you or use you. now that i'm 52 (and old enough to be afraid of teenagers!) i can now care less about any ridicule for admitting this! (lest I ruin my reputation as "god's gift to women" AKA "A legend in my own mind") But, as a 100% socially awkward/ clueless man, i've never made a pass at a women since I cannot read the signs of flirting to save my life! (less I end up one of the guys you are talking about) Which has led to being a running gag amoung the 3 women i've been in relationships with (2 long term and 1 10 year un-successful marriage- an anomily since i seem to be the only monogamous/faithful touring rock/punk/etc. drummer in western civilization!) In that to make it clear to me that when they were interested, they basically had to "attack" me-but in a non-creepy way! (can't think of the right word to descibe my "de-flowering") My mother even once brought the subject up to my wife on our wedding day, on how she managed to "catch" me, considering my shyness/weirdness. which, to put it mildly, is very, very VERY awkward to have your mom discussing your sex life!!!! Anyway, that's my confession. I'm sorry you and other women have to go through this. I wish we would/could grow up, and make this a thing of the past, but unfortunately, we men are only slightly higher up on the evolutionary scale than the average dog that lives solely to hump legs and eat(and, with the gift of opposable thumbs, play doom metal!). Cheers!

i called this shit back in the mid 2000s . there was something i just did not like about that whole scene . people pretty much treated me like a "grumpy,gatekeeping old man a la "you little shits, get off my lawn"" it was nt just corny and fake to me. there was something about these guys that pissed me off . when the shit hit the fan i not only felt heartbroken for these victims i felt vindicated. well, vindicated is an understatement . i cheered. watching burger records crash and burn was awesome. i wanted to see the people who did this get locked up.

Never heard of Burger Records until the implosion. This looks like such a middle class, post ironic, obscure scene (and you would assume attract considerate, sophisticated, thoughtful people). The shear volume of accusations and few admissions from Burger artists clearly indicate a very toxic culture existed. I think the fact that there were all ages shows were a HUGE factor in creating an environment for this occur. Going further any scene or record label which wanted to have this would have to his this would have to be very self aware - this potential for abuse/coercion is colossal. I also think you made some interesting analysis about geeky, insecure men at high school (I was one myself) thrust into status and admiration and then perhaps ? feeling owed something. Also the cliches, attitudes (lack of women's rights, macho culture, drug and alcohol misuse) associated with 'garage rock' may also be a factor. I can see how difficult this is for you and making you reassess your own history and relationships with Burger affiliated bands/people, especially in light of your own similar abuse. Well done for being brave and doing so and really trying to unpack the factors and causes which allowed this to happen.

I'm glad you made a video about this. Just sucks there's barely any I could find here in KZbin about burger records. I'm just sad, because some of those bands. I really enjoyed listening to and help me go through my depression. Although I'm not so surprised that Cuco was in this list. Because he reminded one of those guys in high school, who would play the Mr. Nice guy to get into girl's pants. And try to justify his actions. Saying it was just prank. Never really liked the guy.

Hit the nail on the headl! Thanks for making this video. I personally just had to leave my own rock n roll cult. (literally walked out because of the weird secret abuse going on at the stroke of midnight into 2020 lol) It was my "family" since I was 13 and I spent years of my music career glorifying/being the face for them and being used by them (Im 27 now) I was there all day and night as a teenager and now have PTSD from basically being in a cult. What you said about the pitfall of nostalgia is right on. Luckily theres so many people who are done with this and we just want to rock together and create a magical, expressive space VS the weird cultish secrecy that comes with iron age patriarchy. ❤️❤️❤️

wotaj because our sex education is shit. It’s pretty simple people don’t want to talk about how alcohol changes people’s behavior during sex. And nobody wants to have real confrontation in a non confrontational world. I don’t ever believe it’s one persons fault it’s both. This cancel culture to get attention by calling someone out while tarnishing their reputation is toxic. We don’t know if these claims are true or false. Take it to court if it’s true! Learn to communicate it isn’t just a mans fault it’s fucking both take some goddamn accountability for fuck sake. This is what you get when you don’t teach people how to have sex outside of a partnership.

I think the minute you have 14-17 year olds hanging out with 18+ is a recipe for disaster. It's sad to see this happen. But it's just not in the SoCal music scene, also in gaming where you have underage people hanging out with grown men/women this is going to happen. Unfortunately this is the sad reality. I am following you and got a feed on your album TEETH. The song you wrote was tittled "So Fucking Tired" A song that you wrote while dealing with PTSD. I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this as it can be quite devastating to say the least. I am a fan and would like to know what brought it on. Maybe family issues, or the music business itself. I am on Face Book and that is also where I'm following you. You have a beautiful voice and I like your style of music. You are also a great guitar player and all around musician. I know I can learn alot from you as you are good recording artist. ( Everyone who's reading this, download "So Stonely" it's a fun song with a great sound and awesome beat! ) I have always been a stage singer. I never liked recording I found it quite daunting. I always preferred singing live. You do the song once and you're on to the next. Recording was stressfull for me as you have to do the song on many takes if you miss a beat or hit a spour note. YOU CAN HEAR IT! And so can eveyone else listening to it. It always has to be perfect. I am trying though to record music myself mostly just for fun. Anyway, I hope you're doing better with your PTSD. Patricia

It sucks that she felt violated by the 23 year old guy but her friend and bandmate clearly didn’t have a problem being intimate That’s a normal way that a lot of people move on from rejection sadly. They move on and find someone who will accept their advances and meet their needs. That’s how sexual biology and mating works unfortunately. Blame the animal kingdom and high school.

“You’ll never be as cute as a teenage girl” -Bobby May (worked at Burger Records and was a friend of mine when we were younger!) I stopped talking to him because I was dating someone (new guy/not the abusive ex I mentioned in my post) and he would constantly text or call when he was drunk and beg me to come over and “jam” with him. I told him I was dating someone and he didn’t care and kept calling every so often. Ended up blocking him and haven’t talked to him since. Then found out he had that quote in an insert of some band signed by Burger‘s cassette insert. Fucking gross. He is my age, 30.

Same here! I love the old sound of the BTs and the Growlers and the digital/techno sound of IW... what's going on in the indie scene??? My guess is, the harsh reality being that these guys are immature morons who couldn't let go of their young years and that along with the fact that a lot of indie fans are younger children... well thats a recipe for disaster that they gladly indulged in. But I heard only one guy from BT actually committed statutory rape. The other 2 were just emotionally abusive. As for the Growlers, same thing, one guy was actually a rapist while others like the lead singer were just very inappropriate and let it happen. But the scandal with IW, idk their story

Thank you for sharing. I'm sorry that those experiences happened to you. It's terrible how these people can prey on good will like that. Personally I wouldn't give these people the excuse that they didn't have the power in high school that they found with this label. While that may be true to some extent, it's also true that depraved predators are just depraved predators. Had they "peaked" in high school there predatory behavior would still exist but might take on a different form. These people had a sole motive behind everything they were doing and knew exactly what they were doing. Manipulators manipulate.
@talktalk34 жыл бұрын
I don't think she was trying to minimize the abuse but rather offer a framework for how this abuse might come to be. There are definitely depraved predators and ped*philes but I do believe taking advantage of the power dynamic is a more common and likely reason for the abusive behavior. That and the fact that men are commonly discouraged or shamed for seeking help for dark thoughts or behaviors and submit to this mindset of just being a 'scumbag'. That seems especially prevalent in the music/garage scene.
@ROLLOVERROVERdotORG4 жыл бұрын
@@talktalk3 Oh yeah, not trying to say she was minimizing the abuse or doing anything remotely wrong here. Sorry if it came out wrong. I was only speaking to something I see thrown around, that this new found power is WHY they do this and not just HOW they do this. I understand and agree that this power dynamic is the framework for abuse but I just think that they had this depravity in them with or with out this power (they just wouldn't have had to platform to act on that depravity). Hope that makes sense and absolutely do not want to shout down anyone here, just trying to add to the dialogue. Really sad dynamic all around and I hope these survivors still feel welcome to enjoy and create music.
