Today im doing an update on my Paris apartment! Not a Paris apartment tour official but showing you some renovations on my Parisian home that I bought this summer. You may want to have a contractor look at that because if any walls removed were structural walls there could real problems down the road and the ceiling crack is surely related. It should be possible to add beams with support columns if that is the case so the openness would remain. That may not be the case but because it could be a serious issue i would have someone experienced at least check it. I have been in construction over ten years and am currently fixing a slew of major structural issues in an old house caused by unknowing renovators years ago. It's super stressful doing it alone. Nice apartment and decorating. Happy Holidays🎉

I thought that too but thought I saw structural support between the opened spaces? Could seasonal expanding and contacting of the building make the crack "reappear" ? If possible I'd wait to see?

I would talk to the neighbours on your floor. Do they have similar problems? What's their take on it? Have they had any walls knocked out.

Unfortunately if the crack is widening it may be a structural issue either with the ceiling or the roof itself. You could patch it, but of course that doesn't fix the issue it's purely cosmetic. As you can imagine if you wanted to really assess the issue you would have to open up the ceiling and have an expert assess. Not sure if you have roof access but you could also try to get on the roof directly over your apartment to see what the issue is, or perhaps report it to the building, i'm not sure who owns the roof in your set up ... but I would not recommend doing this yourself and inadvertently falling through the roof into your living space or something dangerous like that. So yeah you probably just need to save up for a bit and get it checked professionally.

The ceiling is a structural problem that probably starts at the ground. It’s not going to fall down around you. The fact that it’s not cracked open again is a good sign. It’s typical of old buildings so you’re doing the best you can with patching and painting. Digging your space and seeing your dreams coming true! I think that's a good point. Buildings do move naturally. But it has opened up again. Looks like it was covered for the sale, and over time has shown up again.

Your place is very artsy and elegant. When you first asked us if you should paint your shelves white I said yes, but I didn't realize you had the natural wood floors underneath, so I feel they blend in nicely now. I see nothing wrong with turning your kitchen into an art studio, it's cool. I love your black dress with the colorful pom poms. As far as the crack in your ceiling goes, ask your parents friends, maybe there is a professional contractor in their circle. It would be wonderful if you could hang a chandelier, but in the meantime, maybe you could improvise with a light weight faux chandelier that you make yourself. I'm sure it would be magical. the most bombshell dress!! I love that heart shaped canvas, and I feel so inspired - I just listened to Jeff Beszo's interview and now this is like the perfect capricorn-aquarius genius blend. re: the ceiling, the roof needs to have more layers. We had the same issue where I live because of solar panels, and the ext roof not being covered properly. It took them removing the panels to stop water damage inside which got really gnarly. You can let the builders know you do not want them inside, and they can work externally! Love you!!

Hey Shayna!! LOVE your appartment and everything you've done to it! YOu are the perfect example of doing YOU and not worrying about what things are SUPPOSED to look like! I LOVE it!! Love what you've done. Its been a minute since i actually checked in to see what you are up to so this was a nice surprise. You look really happy. We had a slight crack in our ceiling ( our building was over 110 yrs old) in the hall but is wasnt so long maybe 2 ft. I had it evaluated when we first bought the appartment 12 yrs ago. We had to for NYC banks to fund us. It was fine. when we sold it 2 yrs ago we were renovating our place and preparing for the sale. I saved money by filling it in with celing putty, smoothing it out. did this twice. then repainted it. it was in our Hall that was like 25 feet long. anyway thats all we did and it looked great. I don't know if your ceiling is in good condition or not. Its expensive to get someone to look at it so if its okay now maybe wait but at some point have it looked at.

The cracks are lightly part water damage over the years via the hole you had for letting out gases (did they ever put the hat on it?) And the wall being taken down. Looking at the top “beam” of the opening it likely has no support anymore. You will want someone to put in a proper support beam. Then ideally you’d need to pay someone to pull down the ceilings and reapply a new ceiling ( adding the decorative plaster work back in. To maintain originality you can take moulds of the decorative plaster before it is torn down)

I think it's just so lovely! I love all the quirks and it's definitely "shaynafied" which is the whole point. It's my idea of the perfect Paris apartment and you still have a view of the grand lady! Open space is better so you have all that glorious light coming in. I would probably get a bed off the floor though just so your mattress can breathe and maybe just get a few different tradies in to view the ceiling no pressure to commit to anything, just advice and quotes to start with. You are in control of everything to do with your space...lucky woman! All power to you, girl! Regarding the crack in the ceiling, I was thinking maybe there’s an attic above your apartment & you could have a look into that (maybe there’s a crack in the roof or smth else that leads to the crack in your apartment?) and other than that I would just ask around your neighborhood (maybe there are some forums or platforms for your neighborhood/Arrondissement where people help each other- or even ask around your friends if they know some artists /… who could help?)

Everything looks so dreamy, babe! RE: the ceiling - if you delicately fish around the hole for the junction box and it's secured to a stud you should be fine to add a chandelier. Just make sure it's screwed in well to at least 2 points. (I bought a borescope on Amazon that makes investigating inside walls & ceilings so much easier) My bet is the plaster has cracked from either previous water damage in the ceiling or natural settling over the course of years. Unless it's crumbling, you could patch it w/ joint compound and a drywall squeegee - but maybe it adds to the charm. ✨ (I just renovated my MCM home top to bottom, so here if you have any reno Qs! 💕)

Cracks are normal when a building settles after construction, however, the cracks should be minor and stay the same after. If cracks appear in an old building and keep widening, it’s a problem. You can tell they are widening when they keep appearing after being filled or plastered over. I think you need to involve a building engineer, not an architect but someone who calculates the statical integrity of buildings, ideally someone who is used to reevaluating the structural integrity of old buildings. If there is an issue they can tell you where to put beams or anchors in the walls. But I think since it might be structural and concerning the roof, this issue shouldn’t only be your responsibility, the other parties in the building should be interesting in keeping the roof from collapsing as well. Do you have some kind of group funding for keeping the building intact?
