So for me the future soldier program was essentially just an exercise program for future soldiers (like myself) so we could get a SMALL hint on what basic training is gonna be like. My recruiting office only made me go once a week and we did strength exercises and cardio. We did things like squats, sumo squats, weighted squats, pushups, sit-ups, crunches, 20 meter runs, a 2-mile run, etc. We were also taught how to sound off and call people by ranks. In terms of the other knowledge and or leading we didn't go into that. I was never quizzed or questioned on my knowledge in terms of the phonetic alphabet, soldier creed, warrior ethos, ranking structure, etc. I learned that on my own. When you work out expect to do these workouts in sets depending on how exhausting the workout is. We also never did any of that "in cadence" stuff when working out. It was mainly showing up, doing what you needed to do, and leaving. This program is not meant to scare you what so ever. It is a chance to get to know your recruiters and meet people who are there that are about to embark and go after the same goal as you which is becoming a United States soldier. It's also a confidence booster. When I first arrived I couldn't even make it through our first ever workout which was 3 or 4 sets of 20 pushups, 20 squats, 20 forward lunges, 20 situps, 20 crunches, 20 squats, 20 sumo squats, and either a 20 meter run or a whole lap around the complex in which my recruitment office was located. I was there with people who were still in highschool and played sports. They were quick and it felt like it was nothing for them. This is where I got my first lesson on what a brotherhood was like. They pushed me to keep going, they were understanding, and they gave me pointers on how to get better at certain exercises that I lacked in. I went home that day with a headache, feeling fatigued and as if I wanted to puke. Despite all of this, I never once questioned why I decided to sign the contract and take my oath at MEPS, not even for 1 second. Instead of feeling sorry for myself I did something about my lack of physcial fitness and started exercising everyday to every other day and eating healthy. I went from failing the OPAT due to getting a 3-7 on the shuttle run to passing it with a 5-4 in just 2 weeks. I was running a mile starting out in 13 or 14 minutes and I managed to get it down to a 10:50 in just 2 short weeks in preperation for my OPAT retest. I was shaving off time that the experts said would take months of running to acheive. I went from not being able to make it through the workout to finishing the workout and other workouts that were given to me. Bottom line, this is where you'll figure out what you need to work on and where you're at in terms of physical fitness. If you are in no shape at all like I was then go do something about it like I did. Don't wait and do absolutely nothing and arrive at basic training wishing you would've done something to prepare for it. Basic training is meant to shock the system and turn you from a civilian into a solider. By getting prepared and doing what you need to do, you're only making the process less rigid and smoother. You take care of your body and your body takes care of you. Trust me when I say this. If you want something get after it and don't stop. I ship out tomorrow so I'll come back to this comment and edit it once I finish basic training and tell you guys how it went. Take care! EDIT - Too easy (forgot to come back and edit it). Out of basic and AIT and enjoying the cold of the north.

I hope you could be able to read this, as of now I am 16 years old. I'm right now, will turn 17 in next year of 2025 January 1st. And I was wandering if you and I could talk about what I should need to know about the DEP. I'm ready to join the military at 17. But was wandering what or how the DEP is like.

Basically we do pt every Wednesday, we run, do weight training and other stuff. recently we started learning drill. And then some Saturdays we have events or mandatory meetings🤷‍♀️ the pt we do is pretty difficult mainly because our recruiters LOVEE pt, so we don’t hold back 😂

Amazing as I was in DEP 42 years ago for 9 months and only a couple of times, I heard from my recruiter. In fact I got worried a couple of times and called just to make sure everything was still on. I usually never got my recruiter, but would talk to another. This is so much better and organized. I heard stories of some recruits changing their minds after months and months with no interaction and not showing up for MEPS to ship or they had moved and all left no return address. Some got in trouble with the law and it was never discovered till after they had left for BCT. And back then with no internet, it was a lot harder to find someone.

FYI: Only 2 years after signing your enlistment contract, your start drawing your "over 2" pay. At E-3 or better, that gets you better pay.

Look forward to camaraderie, your gonna meet new people this program will basically force you to come of the shell you’ve been in your entire life, you’ll make a bunch of friends, this is a really good program if your looking to lose weight like I am, if your unit is like mine you’ll definitely learn how to work as a team especially when the others are doing wall sits passing around 45 pound plates. It’s great like he says it gives you a little look into the Army and you soon realize like we are all here moving towards one common goal the United States Army and that sense of pride definitely comes out you’ll also notice that this is real life and sad times come as your friends/Brothers and Sisters in Arms will ship off soon to their own respective jobs and duty stations. Live laugh and learn in this profession in the eyes of your Recruiter you are already a Soldier in the #1 Army on earth.

I know you run 2-6 miles at basic. But out of curiosity, how much do you start off running in the beginning if you suck at running and are in the lowest ability group? Do they start you off at 1-2 miles, then build up from there? Thanks, and great videos! I ship to Leonard Wood in January if that matters.

Thanks for answering I go to MEPS tomorrow and my recruiter just called to tell me that if I don’t get a letter of enrollment from my university by tomorrow MEPS could ship me to basic during the semester. I am worried that it will kill my gpa. For the program would I have had to discuss it with my recruiter or could I bring it up when I talk to the career counselor at meps. My recruiter never brought that program up maybe it is not available in my area

Damn man just got a call from my recruiter I was turned down due to a “questionable” allergic reaction from medicine when I was a baby, said it was a possible seizure in my records even though I was a few months old and hasn’t happened ever since. Was really looking forward to airborne infantry because my dad was one. Wish they were more loose on letting people in like the old days. But then again people with a heart surgery snuck their way in and has costed some men their jobs so I somewhat understand.
