Agreed on the lower levels thing. One big part I realized trying to do it for the first time this past season? Some teams at this level aren’t even consistent enough to scout. They could be in man, country zone or match and you can’t tell because they’re running it wrong.

That's why I don't teach coverages to my QBs and have them count the number of safties and the boundary safety's alignment. Is he on or off the hash. Meaning, if he is on the hash there is no way he can cover my X deep verticle on the sideline so my QB knows that any sort of hitch he can anticipate that throw but also that the corner must be covering verticle routes in either cover 3 or 4. If the boundary safety is off the hash head up to number our #2 then we can run corner routes or a deep comeback by number 1. Or some sort of switch routes. The main thing I teach is one word association with coverages... 0...deep 1...away 2...middle (of the field because that is where you can earn a living in high school football. That is cash fucking money and I love coaches who tell me they are going to shut us down with a cover 2 shell) 3...seams (in the seam area with curls, seams, posts) 4...flats or underneath.

What is their normal front? How many safeties do they play with? Alignment of their linebackers...depth and width? Who is carrying 3 verticle? We have a one sentence offensive philosophy... We Attack Space. We have concepts good vs every coverage. Most of our concepts have a hot route built in and we throw the ball more than any team we see. We don't lose very often as we work with our kids and teach our QBs to be on auto pilot. They only know three things on every concept...presnap, drop, progression. Our F is assigned protections. I don't develop concepts or play calls vs coverages or worry about what the defenses are going to do. I can look at our down and distance and their alignment and know what coverage they are in, the other coach knows what coverage they are in...but if I teach my QB to know...the 16 year old dback is going mess it all up and be in the wrong place at the right time to make a good football play. It's just better to teach my QBs to read presnap, pick a side or the alert, know his drop and stick to his progression. And never read X to H to Z then back to H or X. I teach them to treat the progression like asking girls to the prom....ask the first girl and if says yes, I stick with her. If she says no, leave and move on to the next and never ask her until the next prom...

In your passing game, do you prefer having concepts that are good vs. all coverages as a way to be sound each week, regardless of the opponent?

Whose arm is stronger? Allen or Herbert? You should compare their great throws... Please, save us from the NFL drought!
