Very interesting stuff. I’ve used an Apple Watch for sleep tracking in the past and found it was terrible. It consistently said I got zero deep sleep, which is incorrect. I switched to a Garmin and though not perfect, the general picture looks a lot more normal. After seeing your video I’m remembering a conversation I had with Garmin about sleep where I mentioned that I move very little during sleep. He said that makes it difficult for trackers to score me and I’m thinking an Apple watch would struggle more due to its reliance on the accelerometer. Just a thought.

I imagine most people who, like me, get the Apple Watch specifically for sleep tracking are interested in fixing and improving their sleep. However it seems most of these devices are terrible at documenting abnormal sleep. So it begs the question, what's the point of using a sleep tracker if it only works for normal healthy sleepers... It'll be interesting to see how well the sleep apnea feature works on the Apple Watch Series 10. That'll sorta be a Rorschach test for sleep tracker effectiveness.

Do I understand correctly that a key determinant of it working correctly is to provide it with your sleep SCHEDULE. ahead of time? I ask because many people do not have set sleep/wake schedules or have a sleep disorder or other sleep problem. Fitbit is able to properly detect sleep/wake without doing this, even for naps (and catches the sleep stages if you are down for more than 3 hours).

I got mine configured to last at least 24 hours on average, and use it as a tool to tell time, find my phone in an instant, gets a small selection of notifications and messages, go the the gym without my phone, display my steps so I walk more, and set cooking times.
