30 years ago when I was working as an Anaesthetist in Landour community hospital, extreme good luck knocked on my door one day and I was for the first time introduced to this humble writer who brought a clay pigeon for my 2 years old son to play with. I was very curious and couldn't contain my thoughts past the tea time. Not realising in whose presence I was, I questioned Mr Bond about the purpose of such a gift. His words still ring in my ears today. Quite simply he said " I want him to know what it feels like to break something! " In that instance, I silently saluted his vision that could only come from a sensitive man of his great stature. Recently in my Retirement, I have taken to Scriptwriting and poetry. How I wish I could have a chance to meet him again and share his wisdom to guide my humble efforts at writing. Someday soon I will find myself knocking on his door but surely not during his afternoon nap time!

Met him thrice in my city and was fortunate to have a conversation with him the second time (he, as well as my father and I, arrived early to the event 😂). He is extremely kind, soft spoken and humourous. Even it was a very warm day, he spent time with the young children despite his tiredness. He was talking to everyone, including people setting up the shamiana, people serving drinks etc with extreme politeness. I had written him a long letter and he read it on the spot and said "you write a lovely letter! I will keep this in my pocket now!" My father had been scared that like most celebs he would be standoffish and I would be let down, but it was SUCH a pleasant experience. He is as gentle and tranquil as his writing.

In a country like India, where people usually don't read much, it's so good to see so much love for this man. For me, he's not just a children's author. When I am tired of monotony, of views of concrete jungle and just want to curl up and escape, I pick up his books even today. Such a beautiful imagination he is having.

Hands down he is one of the most popular modern English writers in India... But most importantly he is an essential part of our childhood. His descriptive skills and plots specially those setting in the hills and forests are simple and lucid but so powerful and impacting that everytime I visit a hill station in North India, random lines from his book flash in my mind. Lots of love and respect to you old man from Kolkata. 💖

@@siddharthnevermind You guys are assuming way too much. I was very careful with my words when I said "Caucasian" and "Indian" and NOT "Britisher" and "Indian". Why did I say that?
