You are so amazing at the details for superior technique. Your connections to the underlying physics, too, is just superior. I watch a lot of technique and swim videos on KZbin as a High School Swim teacher. No one comes close to the level of nuance that The Race Club brings to swimming.

High arms raise is flexible for those who have short length of arms, just like flying fish catching up surface to move forward more and more powerful. Thanks to those two beauties from Hawaii, and the great teacher also.

Yes, but the most important physical attribute is having great shoulder flexibility for extension.

This is literally shoulder injury speedrun lmao, the arm is being bent at a very unnatural position putting strain on your shoulder. Nobody should ever try this. Even olympic swimmers dont do this

That is correct. There are some pretty fast flyers out there using vertical recovery....but all of them have excellent shoulder flexibility.

Nearly every swimming technique has a good and a bad side to it. This one requires more work, but results in more propulsion on the second down kick.

Amazing. Would love to be young and flexible again, but doubt it'll happen. My approach: yards of body dolphin BD , mix in one arm fly OAF, then mix in full stroke FS. BD>BD>OAF>BD>OAF>BD>FS>BD>OAF>BD>OAF>FS etc. If it feels good, drop the BD. Lather, rinse, repeat.

sir I get your point about both type arm recovery. I have some concern over here. My son is more kind of side arm recovery . And I find him having slower hand exit and entry , to and from the water which makes him slower flyer. So far I never tried the high arm recovery , since I was thinking it was a wrong tech to do so. As I have hardly seen top swimmers doing this way. So as you have suggested high arm cab be used with great sholder flexibility , can I try that with my son and how to conclude about his sholder flexibility. He is 8.6 years old by the way. Please assist, I really find it tough to pace him in fly.
@theraceclub2 ай бұрын
You can assess his shoulder extension flexibility by pulling his arms straight back from the back side at shoulder height (with head up). Grab the arms at the elbows, not at the wrists. If his elbows overlap, or touch together, he can do the vertical recovery. It requires more flexibility and strength to do so, but has advantages. If less flexibility, he needs to ascend his arms as they move forward, which doesn't require as much flexibility.

I noticed you're having them breathe late, can you explain the benefits of this technique? Also, I'm curious about where to find similar video equipment to use with my team. Suggestions?
@theraceclub3 жыл бұрын
We teach late breath fly because it causes less drag and is easier for swimmers that learn it properly. It is not necessarily faster, as early breath technique can generate more propulsion. For these videos we use very expensive RED Epic cameras with 8K resolution. For our testing or analysis we are using GoPro8 cameras.

I thought recover her arms straight above her head is wrong because you need more energy to hold the arm. But this video shows that it depends on? sometimes it's better?
@theraceclub3 жыл бұрын
We like the vertical recovery in butterfly for swimmers with excellent shoulder flexibility because it allows for more powerful coupling. You are right that this is less energy-efficient than having the hand in a lower position. This technique might be better suited for the 100 or 50 butterfly.

Surely amazing! But isn’t that pushing your luck asking for a shoulder injury to push your shoulder mobility to such an extreme? Is this something to even consider when passed 65 years old? My wisdom is telling me leave that mobility extreme to women that need to use an avantage they have on men which is shoulder mobility and as a man use your power something we have relatively easy.
@theraceclub2 жыл бұрын
Yes Marc you're absolutely right. This technique is only recommended to swimmers with extreme shoulder flexibility. Good question!
