I feel for you guys making videos when the keyboard sniper detailer's try and take a shot. Panel looks as good as it can minus wet sanding. For anyone working in the real world, they'd understand

I work at a used car lot and do a lot of car wash scratch vehicles, at least 2 a week. I do a lot of wet sanding when they’re bad enough and I’m payed hourly, only 16.50. The dealership is platinum quality, and the work I do for them is platinum quality. Although they’re so uneducated on paint correction that they don’t know how to value it. Before I started they were still using rotary and finishing with a random DA. I made them get Rupes for me and the other guy. Since then the work has been better than ever. I’m gonna have to show them this video, because we can only charge a max of 300 per vehicle due to internal pricing. So I’m really doing $500 plus jobs daily. I clay and prep every vehicle for a two step process, unless it’s silver or gold. It’s very defeating knowing how hard you work and knowing your value and getting shit pay. Moral of the story is this video made me realize that paint correction is not cheap. I’m gonna use this video to maybe convince my GM to get some better compensation at work. Sorry for the rabble, just wanted to come a place where I’m understood. You guys are awesome for this video!

Brian Galvan they ended up giving me a commission rate. $60 for sedans and $80 for suvs and pick ups. Still kinda sucks but it’s also a dealership so I gotta pick and choose my battles. It’s better than before that’s for sure.

I got a good laugh reading some of these comments. Do you really think ANY dual action polisher is going to TOTALLY perfect a vehicle that has defects of this amount? This isn't a SHOW TRUCK that sits in a garage 360 of 365 days in a year. This is a DAILY DRIVEN vehicle that has 200k miles! After 2 steps 80% of the defects are gone, expecting more is ridiculous!

Crazy I just did a paint correction on an '05 F150 with black paint pretty close to this! It definitely required 3 steps. I took a slightly different approach than what you showed here. It would be the equivalent of the zephyr on MF, then the green one (quartz?) on foam and then fine polish on a light polishing or finishing pad. 90-95% correction. You guys did a killer job with this video! Keep up the great work!!!!

Thanks for sharing this experience. Actually, this truck is the real world example just like my truck, full of scratches, chips, and marks. A disappointing fact on youtube is that every detailer only shows their products and efforts on a nearly brand new car which is bullshit bc all that need is a car wash.

I'd never heard the term step down panel. Makes perfect sense! Can you guys sometime cover how many passes and pad cleaning as you move along and when you should swap out pads? Also perhaps how to determine when you might mix say a course compound with a finer pad?
@hallmarksdetailingllc8078
@hallmarksdetailingllc8078 7 жыл бұрын
With microfiber, after every 2x2 i'll blow the pad out. Wash the pad after every panel, or half panel. With foam, after every 2x2 i'll use a MF cloth and rub the pad around on it and wash the pad after every panel.

Awesome video! As it happens, I have a black 2007 F-150 with 170K on the clock and have just purchased the 15 Mark II kit with the four polishes/pads, apron, etc. I bought the kit because I also have a black 2017 Z06. The F-150 is going to be the test mule so that when driving weather returns (Seattle) I'll have developed some technique to keep the Corvette looking great. Great video series with Rupes. Keep up the good work.

OMG!!!! First time owner of a RUPES 21mkII deluxe edition bag with the 4 small compounds bottles color coded. I have not used it yet just bought it today. I bought this for personal use and do some friends cars. I have watched 2 hours of video manuals do say much. You made a small as$ remark thinking everyone should know. BUT, we color coded the bottles with the pads........................... oh i feel like a dumb as$ not figuring that out. So thank you for the wonderful explanation on the products, features, advantages and benefits. (FAB) approach. Looking forward in watching more videos.

Maybe this is a stupid question. But how Do you even it out if you went on top demonstrate what you can do in 4 steps. And the client chooses to only let you do 1 step. Just accept that there is a more clear part on the panel of what is the way to go
@MrRedex88

Good results consider how traded the clear was. I'd go with my Flex3401 over my long throw D.A or the rotary first followed by the long throw. The Flex isn't always my first choice but for this one oh yeah

Mindblown at how much even such a clapped out car can be improved; until a few months ago, when my car obsession hadn't progressed to the paint and detailing aspect of things, I'd have just taken a car like that in for a new paint job; I know so much more now. Also mindblown at some of the comments; it's almost as if they were watching the video but listening to nothing that was being said and instead their minds were furiously planning and plotting and thinking of all they thought was wrong with the demo; way to miss the entire point of and message behind the video 😐

just wondering, could you not sort of figure out which panel was repainted using a paint depth gauge? because the rest of the car would probably have a similar paint depth and the painted panel would be slightly different, in theory anyway. But not sure it would work? Just thinking it could possibly save having to do two test panels

I bought a SUV off a car lot that was recently repainted with Single Stage black and neglected as a daily driver. It has lots of defects and I was able to clean it up by polishing. I started with a DA and eventually switched to a rotary. I experimented with different compounds DAT & SMAT and later finished with a sealant that has a cleaning polish. The truck looks sharp with a few minor defects, I get some attention driving it around town.

Now ... how does a car get that scratched to begin with ? I'm a finisher for luxury boats, I know that gelcoat and paint are two very different things, but the basics remain the same, we're just allowed to apply a lot more heat to gelcoats to help remove deeper scratches, but polishing is roughly the same process.
@gottint954
@gottint954 3 жыл бұрын
If you hit that with a rotary buffer first with some good old 3m perfect it compound a lot more of those deep halo scratches could of came out that I can still see without wetsanding then I would of hit it with rupes and an orbital for better results than what you got.

I'm about to buy the Rupes system. However I do think this video could have been done in a way to better showcase the product. I know for a fact my rotary probably in far less time would have done alot better job for the first step in removing scratches. Maybe Rupes should make a more aggressive compound to go with the heavy cutting microfiber pad. Maybe they just didn't put any effort into compounding during the first step. I can tell you I would have expected alot more and would not have been close to satisfied with that result. Just my thoughts. You should always show case what your product can really do.

Yeah, I love the products and support both companies but kinda lame on the actual demo. Wait 10 minutes before a tool hits the paint and then you fast forward the actual polish stage to the wipe off which we get to see in real time. Didn't really teach anyone the proper technique nor was it necessarily used in this demo.

@krus0094
@krus0094 7 жыл бұрын
They did acknowledge at the beginning that they think this would need wetsanding to really bring it back. I think there is value in that it demonstrates what the most aggressive end of the rupes lineup can achieve in one set; Dylan also pointed this out at the beginning saying that rupes always tests their system on defects they think they won't be able to get out. But there is some irony in talking about additional refinement on paint that is still trashed.
@c6z061
@c6z061 7 жыл бұрын
Wetsanding, yes, but they could have made it look much better with one more focused compounding pass. Plus, a second pass after the pad has been primed will yield much better results. It is ironic to refine the finish, so the deeper swirls become more clear? Didn't strip polishing oils either, so the polishes were filling to some degree. These guys definitely know what they're doing, I just think they could have made a better video.
@dylanvonkleist3224
@dylanvonkleist3224 7 жыл бұрын
Guys, you are missing the entire point of what the video was. It wasn't to showcase the capabilities of our system, it really wasn't even to demonstrate levels of correction. It was to show a process that anyone can deploy in their business to help customers understand the difference between the number of passes vs. their expected result and budget. Thats it. My reputation is such that I don't need to prove my ability to correct a panel - this is a business lesson more than a detailing lesson. If you didn't take that away from the video then I'm sorry it wasn't more clear for you. When you have a moment give this a read: facebook.com/notes/dylan-von-kleist/the-sniper-culture-of-detailing/1098094676895539/
