I think the competition, low marketing and bad release timing definitely of contributed to ROTB's performance at the box office. It was a good movie that deserved a lot more money, but I feel like the studio got too scared of other films doing better than Transformers (which most of the them didn't lol) and kind of let the film out to die imo.

The general audience is used to Michael Bay’s style and flare and these new movies lack those qualities, not to mention whenever someone brings up the word reboot it's a huge turn-off, Paramount knows if they confirm the films are reboots they will lose the interest of the Bayverse audience and if they confirm they are prequels they will lose the interest of the G1 fans and that puts them into an inescapable corner. Also, many people are still asking for a proper conclusion to Bayverse. These new movies are also being targeted to the fans take the Maximals for instance the fans know them but the majority of the general audience has never heard of them and has no interest in them. Another thing Bayverse excelled at was playing around with the genre and the idea of good and evil alien robots. Has anyone ever noticed that all of the Decepticon's scenes are rather uneasy and have a horror movie feel to them while the Autobots always made you feel inspired and safe around them? Bayverse was also good at making you jump at the unexpected. At the time of ROTF, many people outside the fandom had never seen or heard of a combiner so when Devastator showed up you can bet the general audience was absolutely starstruck. Compare that to the Maximals and it’s just not as cool as how the Dinobots were introduced ROTB basically spoon-fed the general audience and clearly they didn’t like it. Every film in Bayverse had a unique and different tone to them but Bumblebee and ROTB just feel like generic superhero flicks that many people are exhausted of seeing especially since every single franchise seems to want to copy the Marvel formula when Transformers specifically already had its own formula for the live-action franchise. I also heard Paramount mention that if ROTB was a success they would confirm the film as a reboot but if it flopped they would officially brand it as a prequel and guess what the latter won the coin toss and now Paramount is too afraid to say anything especially since they immediately jumped to talking about Transformers One as soon as ROTB was confirmed a failure.

I agree with you, as a bayverse fan the g1 designs just doesn’t make sense for the movies. And also the whole uncertainty with reboot or prequel thing is so dumb because if it is a prequel there are SO many plot holes and irregularities that don’t match up. As for a reboot, like you said, the general audience is just going to be confused and uninterested in the movies.

I swear as a bayverse fan myself, it kills me that years later, fans still act like non g1 designs are meant to be "realistic" despite non g1 designs were a thing prior to the first bayverse film and many TF cartoons have non g1 designs be very simplified and not overly complex either. Just say you like non g1 designs instead of saying they don't make sense.

Appreciate other youtubers finally speaking the unfortunate truths about rise of the beasts, especially you Alex being one of the goat ogs in the transformers content community. We all wanted rise of the beasts to be amazing and do great, but the reality was a lot was missing, and if you follow the breadcrumbs it starts to make more sense. Its not as simple as blaming it on movie competition, because all the other competitors who had good movies made their money. If a movie is good people will see it. Diving BTS and learning how much was gutted form this movie to due to cutting corners and studio interference, it makes a lot more sense why rise of the beasts was a hollow afterthought of what it COULD have been. Scourges cut background, transit sequence adding depth to optimus, trailer spoiling bee revival + so much more could be spoken on.

Rotten tomatoes is a toxic baseline for movies, ‘buzzkill’ is the right word for it. Personally I don’t let that influence my film choices. If I want to watch something I will. If you let that influence you then you are easily led by others opinion. I enjoyed TF ROTB and bought digitally after seeing 3 times in the theatre. Look forward to the animated movie and the sequel when they come out regardless of RT’s opinion (Rant over @RT’s) love the video Alex and is no doubt been something that has been asked by many TF community fans

You do have your points Alex, but I think you're missing a few points on why ROTB didn't do well in the box office. Here are the reasons, on why I think ROTB didn't do well: 1. The Story wasn't great: Tbh, if you watch all of the Bayverse Transformers films again, ROTB's story is no different. It just copied the same story element that the Bayverse used and that is the "MacGuffin" story element. ROTB focused too much on the "Transwarp key" (MacGuffin) and they forgot to flesh out other story elements, like Optimus Prime's character arc and character growth, the Maximals, Scourge, the Terrorcons, Unicron, Predacons, etc. 2. They failed to use the "Show, Don't Tell" rule: They didn't use this rule on Optimus Prime's character arc and character growth, the Maximals, Scourge, the Terrorcons, Predacons and Unicron. All of these examples I mentioned, the film told it rather than showing it to the audience. To further explain, I'll choose Optimus Prime's character arc and growth. His character arc was told to the audience by Mirage when Noah and the Autobots were going to ge the "Transwarp key". His character growth was told by Optimus Primal when they placed Bumblebee on top of a energon stone. 3. A lot of things were added in the film but they weren't executed properly or not executed at all: ROTB had a lot things to handle, like the Maximals, Terrorcons, Scourge, Optimus Prime's character arc and character growth, humans, Unicron, etc. And some these story elements were either executed badly or not executed at all. To further explain, in my opinion, they didn't execute Optimus Prime's character arc and growth properly. Like I said in my second point, both his character arc and character development didn't use the "Show, Don't Tell" rule. I was suprised when Optimus Prime said, "Then we bring to him." I was like, "Oh. That's it? This is point in the story where Optimus Prime believes that humans are worth fighting for?" That moment for me really felt all of a sudden and we really didn't see Optimus Prime grew as a character. Hence I was so dissapointed on how Optimus Primes character arc and character growth was so badly executed. Same goes with Scourge. A lot was missing on his character to make him a really good villain. My apologies, if this is too long. I just really wanted to share my thoughts on why I think TF ROTB wasn't well received in the box office and critics.

In my opinion these are the 3 biggest reasons the film underperformed: 1. Took too long to release. It was 5 years after bumblebee came out. Any goodwill and positive reception that movie got from general audiences faded because they took too long to capitalise on it. People got tired of waiting 2. Insane Competition. ROTB was sandwiched between so many blockbusters it’s a miracle it even made over $400million at all. Most families can’t go out and see every new film, so they have to choose one and they were more likely to pick something like spiderverse or barbie 3. Paramounts refusal to 100% commit to the reboot. Hasbro were the ones to officially declare bumblebee as a franchise reboot, but paramount is still trying to play it both ways. I genuinely believe if they marketed this movie as a true reboot for the franchise it would’ve done better. The fact is that The bayverse has soured peoples views on transformers and many general audiences still think that Michael bay are making these. Theyre expecting the same thing again and thus didn’t give the movie a chance, and who can blame them? The trailers didn’t make it look very different either

Bayverse made 5 billion dollars and G1 fans are only around 20% of the fanbase at this point. Even if Paramount wanted to cater to G1 fans it would not be profitable because G1 is outdated. Bayverse was successful because it was modern and appealed to the mainstream audience. The reboot series only appeals to G1 fans which are a minority of the fanbase now.

If I said 100% reboot, it would be the same G1 fans saying finally a real TF movie, Bayverse fans don't know what transformers is, causal movie goers. It didn't go wrong anywhere. Look at how long the movie was in cinemas. Here in Alberta, it was only showing for 5-6 weeks tops. Was on digital like 40 days after release. Compare that to say DOTM, which i remember seeing in cinemas (albeit cheaper ones) till september of its june theatrical release

I feel like this adds to what I think is the big problem; Bayverse fans vs G1 fans. All G1 fans screaming it's a reboot, finally real movies! Accept that the shitverse is over. Real fans would support the direction, Bayverse fans are casual movie goers rather than TF fans. Anyone who argues there's proof this could be a soft reboot ( new idea but same timeline) have no brains. Yes in 2019 there were articles saying BB starts a new movie universe. Now some say BB isn't part of this. 🤷‍♀️. There's designs that give me the impression that they want to connect the trilogy to Bayverse. At least it would be harder if they did BB movie on point G1. They know they've pissed off fans and might be looking to serve G1 fans for the next two movies and they allowed themselves to decide TLK doesn't exist. Theories don't matter now. It's very likely they're deciding to end the live action movies because the safety net ( yes that's what my impression was since day 1) didn't work. That the only theory to prove is will the animated movie actually be standalone or will they decide the future is animated G1? I'm leaning more towards end it all. Nahhhh this movie was a success a minor one but successful nonetheless. For the first sequel in 5 years and being the first main Transformers titled movie since TLK which that and AOE are the reason why the franchise was where it was in first place. Paramount confirmed the movie did break even and earn a bit more. It has the Highest audience score out of all TF films. Don’t even mind with the critic score as even the first films was rotten too with BB being the only one with a fresh critic rating but the audience rating is what matters. A- on Cinemascore. Hasbro reported that the movie was a success to them and it’s been the highest toy sales they’ve seen in years and with this franchise toys sales is important. This franchise is back and I can’t wait for TF One next year and the next sequel to ROTB with Steven Caple Jr

For me, this is what I would have changed to make it better: They should have doubled down on the whole unicron thing. That being the unicron we see in Rotb is the SAME one from Tf5. The maximals are from the bayverse, generations after. Scourge is a reformatted Optimus prime from the bayverse. The bayverse is essentially dead, since unicron destroyed most of it, so the maximals try to save others from the same fate, ending up in the “travisverse”? But as it is, I think Rotb is alright

It went wrong when they decided not to kill off Bumblebee permanently, made an ugly version of Wheeljack, have Mirage in the same alt mode as Jazz, not developed the other maximals, have the Terrorcons hunt Decepticons and Predacons when they’re supposed to be on the same side🙄, have one of the marketing posters suggests that Optimus Prime and Optimus Primal were going to fight each other and the GI Joe post credit scene. They need to have a proper GI Joe movie before suggesting a crossover. But I still enjoyed the movie. The only one that deserves my hate is TLK.

1- There´s no such a thing as superhero movie fatigue. There is mediocre movie fatigue. And while ROTB was better than any of the Bay films, it was still mediocre. A 5/10 after Bumblebee is not what we should expect. And yeah, I am putting 2007 at a 4.5/10. 2- Creator is a great concept and great effects trapped in a movie so rushed it feels like a recap of 3 seasons of Tv. 3- Ah, the reputation of the Bay era. Now that is a good argument. its a good movie, but it was the wrong movie to make especially coming off of bumblebee. im not a film producer but making a sequel that follows up a grounded story that felt like a fresh start, that includes an overarching villain in unicron and multiple gimmicks such as beast wars and terrorcons is messy. rotb felt like the finale to a trilogy, but the first two movies of said trilogy are missing. the first two being a movie that reboots transformers with the autobots and decepticons dynamic, and a standalone movie introducing the beast wars characters.

The problem is this varies by fan. From day 1 it's been Bayverse fans vs diehard G1 fans who argue 100% G1 is how it should be. I nean Alex himself is even saying much better film. You forgot another point; promotion. I noticed how much paramount promoted Paw Patrol and TMNT more than RoTB before, during and after the time in theaters. I'm predicting animated G1 is going to end up being the future since animated costs less. Even if they do a movie like BB; a character from G1, i see the same argument and dividing. Serve the G1 fans, screw Bayverse ( same even if Bayvers elements stayed but different director).. Biggest problem; Rotten Tomatoe, but even if this wasn't a reason, i feel like the division among fans would be the reason. That this is no longer a franchise for the TF fans. How Knight and Caple Jr are real fans because they grew up watching G1 rather than watching G1 years after the original run. Paramount.... If we got most of the Bayverse elements but not the stupid crap Bay added because he can as director and more balance with screentime, pissed OP etc, then yeah I guess I blame them, but surely someone has the power to tell the director no? 🤷‍♀️ especially when this is a toy company letting movies about one of their products being made. So now here we are, fans arguing correct direction, the correct way to think to be a real TF fan that yeah I think it's better to end the movies and turn both timelines into TV shows. I think it's too late for my idea and also I think they'd have to put Bay back as a director for my idea of soft reboot from my understanding if the decisions the director makes vs everyone else dang it. I thought I had a solution to make more fans happy.

I preferred the Michael bay movies instead. I understand that oldheads like the old school aesthetic of the new movies but it seems general moviegoers beg to differ. A dying franchise is a franchise that can’t get new fans. I think the they should of stuck with the bay verse instead. Despite how you feel about the aesthetics I think more importantly having a good story and acting will automatically make it a lot better. That’s story is trash

For me I’m still partial to the bay movies for how badass the fight scenes were, how the score sounded, and how cool and sorta real the Cybertronians themselves looked. This movie for me wasn’t bad and I liked Scourge since he actually was pretty creepy. The only thing for me that annoyed me the most about the movie was Noah’s little brother sounding like he was “cool” and wasn’t at all surprised at Mirage existing. That and I despise the direction they went with Wheeljack, such a dumbass idea it’s not even funny. Plus Stratosphere didn’t help with the fight at all and he only dropped Bee off so he could be the badass bot he is. Also the song that plays when Bee comes back just ruins the moment so much and should’ve been replaced by like a reimagined badass battle entry version of the song that plays when Bumblebee gets the Allspark to shrink. Tbh that would’ve made that moment so much better

imma tell you what it is Alex, i grew up on transformers, ran from school to home because i never wanted to miss a sec, but the reaction to me in my opinion is similiar to the latest star wars trilogy, n im beyond crazy for star wars, but the thing is the characters!! the force awakens was ok, but the other 2 were horroble, n i believe its because you have a combination of uninteresting characters n actuallly the fact. you go away from familiar character, and also made up characters i.e. rey, ben solo, finn etc…rise of the beast follows the same pattern, even tho scourge was bad ass, whos gonna run to the theatre to see scourge, n especially the 2 terrorcon minions, if you jus come out with optimis prime vs megatron in true megatron form, silver, cannon on his right arm, transforming into a gun, starscream, soundwave, optimus, grimlock bee, ratchet, ironhide etc, not wheeljack as a van with glasses, give us what we know, and what made us fall in love with this franchise

The wokeness ruined this film for me. Every white character in the film was evil or stupid. Both of our human heroes were "held back" by white people. Veiled homosexual jokes by Mirage... "dude, you were INSIDE me!".. , not to mention Optimus being portrayed as a human-hater... in need of a "redemption arc"... all of that combined led to this being my least-favorite of the TF films.. and that's saying A LOT! If "representation matters!", who would young white kids look up to while watching this movie?.. there were literally NO good white folks in this film! OR.. if you're like ME and many others.. you don't have to see someone who looks JUST LIKE YOU to "see yourself" in their shoes. I grew up mimicking Michael Jordan when I played basketball.. not because "he looked like me", obviously, but because I enjoyed his style of play, his dominance, his competitiveness, and I wanted to grow those traits in myself. You all can bring up other reasons why this movie failed, but to ignore the things I brought up here is doing a disservice to your viewers. If you don't think those issues effect businesses, see: Bud Light. Stop shoving your political and social viewpoints down our throats! I'm here to "lose myself" in the cinematic world you create! Within 60 seconds of the movie's start, I'm reminded that I'm living in 2023..

Fatigue of the franchise or genre Crap marketing Bad release timing I disagree about the RT score considering even the very first movie had a rotten score and so did all but BB movie. All interviews leading up to the movie with the director the main thing he had to say was "New York/Brooklyn vibe" or how excited he was for the Peru festival - things who cares about when we're talking about giant robots? The fact a few months before the movie came out it was known to be in production hell and had like 10plus cuts of the movie just before release The trailer having bad cgi and in the final movie I think this had a lot going against it Personally i think its the worst of the franchise or at least tie with the last knight
