It is sad that only two of the old tailors are still family-owned, my family's Savile Row tailoring business was sold off in the early 1980s, and I was only young at the time. As a tailor trained in civilian attire, I am always in awe of military tailoring, especially as you say the exquisite hand braiding. Beautiful work. Lovely walk-through, Tom. Thanks.

Thank you for this video. I had the pleasure of visiting Dege & Skinner last week and purchased two shirts. While it was my first visit to them or any other Saville Row shop, I felt very welcomed. And the quality and feel of their shirts astound me. I now cannot imagine wearing anything else for business wear. Might a bespoke shirt or suit be in the offing next time?

Dege (pre amalgamation) built my uniforms in 1985, when Sandhurst cadets still had a healthy uniform grant. I ended up giving them to a London theatre as they were still as good as new 30 years later, but an amalgamation and labour government later were, by then, obsolete.

My brother was in the Green Howards, and because it is a properly old regiment things were still done the old way, so his mess dress involved a handmade and embroidered waistcoat which was responsible for a huge chunk of the bill. Modern regiments have those things made by machine....
