What I really like about this fight is that it is "realistic". At this point of the story, Naruto had zero chance of defeating Neji in a fair fight. He (Naruto) took advantage of Neji's arrogance to give him the final blow. Had Neji kept his guard up, he would have seen the attack coming and he would have dodged Naruto's punch. But he was too full of himself and that's why he lost.

This fight always bugged me, not for the physical fight but for the battle of philosophies that underlie it. The whole philosophical battle is Neji's determinism and Naruto's anti-determinism. Neji believes that ones destiny controls their fate while Naruto feels that one can change their fate through hard work. However in the end this fight is a win for Neji's philosophy solely because Naruto had to use the nine tailed fox's chakra to win instead of his own ability. Naruto won solely because it became his destiny to house the nine tailed fox and because the 4th hokage sealed the nine tails in Naruto precisely because he felt its power would be needed in the future and because he remembered Jiraiya's belief in a child of prophecy.

That aside there is a difference between using your natural abilities and using an augmented ability like an implanted tailed beast. Further this whole fight was lined up as a philosophical battle between Neji's determinism or the belief that your destiny is decided from the day that you are born and nothing you do can ever change that, and Naruto's anti-determinism, or belief that your destiny is ever changing based on your actions. However as I outlined in my original comment Naruto only won because of the child of destiny prophecy and the actions the fourth hokage took in sealing the nine tailed fox inside Naruto because he was thinking of said prophecy. In the end the attribute that made Naruto our main character in the first place is the only reason he won, not wholly his skill or talent as he would have lost long before he could enact his playing possum trick had it not been for the nine tailed fox chakra.

@Tsunayoshi Sawada Except the Byakugan is something he was born with and the nine tailed fox was forcibly sealed into Naruto to augment his abilities. There is no need to really "unlock" the Byakugan, you simply posses it. That is wholly different from taming even part of a giant fox spirit that is basically a vessel made up entirely of chakra. So it is arguable that Naruto worked hard to tame the nine tailed fox for some of its chakra, but the nine tailed fox was actually given to him as part of a destiny. It would be no different than a hero of legend being given a legendary sword that specifically works on all of their enemies.

The whole point about naruto defying the destiny here is that he had no talent while neji was a hyuga prodigy since the beginning. Naruto had no real justus in his arsenal except the shadow clone justu which he managed to learn again through hard work and a bit of luck too. Also he was a failure, a loner, and had to face a lot worse than neji, But still he managed to beat him. Also they both used their gifted powers to drain each other down but again in the end naruto used his shadow clone to trick him and beat him. If you remember, the clone justu was his weakness and he managed to beat him with the same. He even says that in the end of the fight. To conclude it can be said yes naruto was the child of the prophecy but he had to go through a lot to attain all his powers. Its not like he woke up with them on fine morning.

I'm glad I wasn't the only person in this comments section who realized how poorly this fight has aged. People hated Naruto's fight with Kiba given how Kiba throughout the whole fight was abusing "Fang Over Fang" bragging about how much of an unskilled scrub Naruto is and how he only made it this far because Sasuke was carrying his ass all the way here. But this...Neji got faded by one punch. Compare this to Neji's fight he has later against a member of the Sound 4. I don't care how super charged that punch to the jaw was, if I were Neji's dad I'd be embarrassed.

Oh god i always hated naruto. Like every single side character is much more interesting and likeable than him.. His only strenght is his plot armor with the Kurama bullshit. :d I'm so glad that he will die in Boruto :3
