Basically everything shikamaru did showed how great Naruto can be. Virtually everything he did was replicated by other ninjas even at the very end of the series. Even obito used that kunai kite thing in his penultimate battle. The idea that he's a genius cannot be understated. His writing was genius and it played through the entire series.

To this day this fight stands as one the most notable in Naruto. No fists thrown in a showdown of who is mightier, no Jutsus honed over dozens of generations. A fight that truly showed what being a Ninja is- Using your head and putting your enemy in a position where the final blow is guaranteed. From the start Shikamaru had one plan- Establish a false limit his opponent thought he had combined with a lazy attitude, and make them panic with a few tricks all in order to position them for the final blow to be dealt. Just as the InoShikaCho combo is intended. Temari might have otherwise been aware of the hole, but because of how many times Shikamaru made her panic and need to reposition, she forgot as the need to "survive" (Yes it's a match where death is most likely going to be stopped) got the best of her. Putting her right in where Shikamaru wanted. The best part? The man doesn't even claim the win. Not because the others might beat him, but because he knew that those watching would see that he's what they need- Not just a strong Ninja, a SMART Ninja.

Shikamaru WASN'T out of Chakra, he didn't want to put out the effort to go further into the match. His goal from the start after realizing what kind of person Temari is was to knock her off her high horse and deal a blow to her ego. He could've won this if he cared to but he didn't. I like how this fight was never fully one sided. Shikamaru did have to plan and adapt to Tamari, and her wind attacks could have hurt him if he didn't keep up a proper cover. And when he could not find a proper way to defeat her without wasting a lot of chakra, he ended the fight. Honestly I think they both came away with a lot of respect for one another.

No, killing your opponent won't land you Chunin status, hence why Shikamaru didn't bother to make Temari surrender or kill her. When Temari got captured under Shikamaru Shadow Possession Jutsu, Shikamaru know that he is now a qualified Chunin. The Chunin exam rules are kinda weird, I know, but it is what it is.

@@ChasehaWing Cause to win in a match, you either need to make the opponent surrender or die. However, making it no 1 won't make you a Chunin. Hence, why bother making Temari got killed or make her surrender when you already sure you can get Chunin status?

Also you're allowed to just knock your opponent unconscious to get a win. That's how Neji almost got a win when the referee thought he knocked out Naruto before he did his tunnel attack.

I think what really earned him is Chunin rank was that he conceded. He knew that despite all his careful planning, he couldn't fight Temari on low chakra. A leader must know when to strategically retreat, especially when you're leading a squad.

Back when strategies are planned into the next level. Shikamaru planned 1000 steps on how to claim the older sister of the Kazekage, automatically making his son a heir of Suna and made him the brother in law of Kazekage. This is what I call pure strategy.
