I currently work as a public servant, and I hate my job. I've lost my dignity and self respect working in this field. People are so mean and nasty in my line of work. Now that I know the loan forgiveness program is a hoax, then I can get out of this line of work. Looking forward to working multiple jobs to get out of debt.

I know how you feel Alan. I was offered a job at an insurance company reviewing medical claims from very sick people. The more claims I denied the more I would be promoted in the company. No thanks. I turned that down. Who am I to decided who is scamming and who is really in need? I took a job across the street with an engineer firm and have been here for decades.

No one needs student debt. Here's how: Go to the local community college for a while, taking transferable courses. Join the National Guard. Move on to one of the lower-cost state universities.

Perhaps the truly physical disabled ones should get assistance but EVEN that is abused. The number of able bodied individuals that use handicap parking tags after begging the doctors to diagnose them as handicapped for government assistance… they’re the problem. And you’re right that’s probably 55% of people. They consume more than they produce. The bottom 55% will sink this boat.

I will have all my student loans paid off in 3 months and the lousy, Dept. of Ed will be out of my life forever! Thanks for showing me the way Dave!

ROTH IRAs! I read an interesting comment about someone stating "don't trust the government in having your retirement grow tax free with a ROTH IRA." I say he has a point. Will the government really allow us to bank millions of dollars tax free when we retire? That's a lot of trust we are putting in them.

You're talking about a Traditional IRA or 401K (tax deferred). Roth IRA & Roth 401K grow tax free.

If they get rid of the Roth(by taxing it), then it's just a regular IRA... no biggie. Roth only makes sense if you're going to jump tax brackets usually, it depends on the person.

I agree Chris with a minor comment. I don't think they'll directly tax Roth benefits because that might cost them votes. (Unless they convince enough of the sheeple that folks having Roth's are evil and need to be taxed). I would expect something underhanded like "We'll cut your social security benefits if you have enough Roth savings, because that would be fair and your part to keep social security afloat as you really don't need the benefits or some leftist jibber jabber like that.

droptozro Roths are the best for retirement. Traditional 401k means that when you take money out it gets taxed as income. Even with a tax break from putting money into a Non Roth the money is presumably going to grow. Does saving 35% now on 10k sound better than paying 35% on 100k? Taxes are the single biggest drag on retirement savings. Up here in Canada we have the TFSA (ROTH) and RRSP (401k) the only reason I have both was because when I started investing the TFSA didn't exist, now that it does the only account my monies are being invested in is the TFSA until it's maxed out. BTW TFSA beats ROTH since there is NO tax when you put money in, while it grows in the account, and when you take it out.

Tell that to the victims of the 2008 housing crisis that lost their fortune and chose to return to college in hopes of a new skill or career field. Up until that point there wasn't very much "going back to college" for people older than 18-24 years of age. We tend to forget or tuck away such crises as if they never happened. People go into panic mode when the house is getting foreclosed on and the last person with an income walked in the the door with a pink slip. No one including you are immune to poor. It's like a drug or a cancer, either you chose it or maybe it chose you. I'm sure a good majority of the people we are referring to were somehow affected by 2008 and didn't choose their fate. Student loans were sold just like sub-prime mortgages. As a matter of fact, the student loan IS the new sub-prime mortgage. It's just another way multi billion dollar companies (or the US Government) can fleece hard working people with "that fake American dream." This way off the original topic so I digress.

"Didn't choose their fate" oh please, they absolutely did choose. They were overextended which forced them to take money out of their nest egg when they shouldn't have. If they had 100k in a retirement plan or just a mutual fund and had left it alone the entire time up through now, they wouldn't have any issue. They placed themselves in a position where they had no other options because they weren't handling money well, it was just covered up by the bloated economic climate.

The only way you should keep debt long term is if an employer pays the bill every month. Let the principle of the loan in an interest-bearing savings account of 2.0% collect interest, if you get fired, laid off, or worst... Pay it off immediately, pocket what has left the employer didn't pay.

The persons who qualified for the program paid 120 payments like the contract states. Forgive the loans...that's it. No one is lazy, these ppl paid on their loans based on their income for the past 10 years, they did nothing wrong. Not everyone is in a six figure career or has the skills in a career field that pays close to that much. Some people's skillset are in careers fields that don't pay much... i.e., public defenders, social workers, counselors, teachers.....come on these careers don't pay but persons believed in themselves that their salaries will eventually increase after getting some experience under their belt. Whats more, in addition to their low salaries, persons have hundreds and thousands of dollars in student loan debt to pay back, and with their kids and their monthly expenses, as well as unexpected expenses, there's no way they could've paid off these loans in 2 or 3 or 5 years! There are professionals who need this program; not only based on the fact that they are in a public service career, but also based on their income potential. While you all are blaming the borrowers, how about the government mandates to significantly increase the earnings of these professions so that the borrowers will be fincancially able to pay back their student loans in a shorter period of time so that they won't have to depend on government programs!!

I am not the one that was victims of a sub prime mortgage but some people were duped and are victims of lies and deceit. Get off your high horse and stop thinking you have the answer to the whys and hows. Hindsight is 20/20. I'm sure these people wish they can go back and change things that happened in the past. You live and learn. Another aspect of the student loan forgiveness that Dave didn't touch on is the fact that nearly every time, the job(s) you will be required to take in order to qualify/stay qualified are, to put it bluntly, horrible. Bottom end of the pay scale for that position, and usually terrible working conditions. To use where Dave lives as an example (though obviously he would not do this), that would mean Schoolteacher, Doctor, Nurse, Public Defender or an employee in a public assistance office... In Memphis, TN. What is most of Memphis like? It is the Detroit, or Baltimore, or St. Louis, or Chicago of Tennessee. It IS that bad, yes, you will be assigned to a government job in the worst part of town, and if you move/transfer (even to another state), your new job will be just as horrible as the one you left. You have to take the job openings that most, to put it bluntly, simply won't. That debt forgiveness is the carrot they're dangling in front of you. You would be extremely lucky to survive with your sanity, or yes, even your life, intact.

I bet they were people that were thinking they would settle for a lower wage and justified it by getting their loans paid off and getting a pension. Dave was wrong about doing more work for more money, because in the private sector you can do the same work and make more money than working for government. I used to work for government and will never go back. 10 years of busting in in the private sector with raises and promotions factored in will probably outweigh that loan forgiveness program in terms of income over ten years for all of these people. Number one lesson learned - do not work for government. It might be impossible to get fired and you might not have to do much to get paid but if you just do even a medium amount like the average, and show up on time every day and be reliable to do the average, in the private sector you will make tons more over your lifetime. If you actually really try, then government work becomes a joke. And government pensions, like this student loan forgiveness program, are not guaranteed.

Too bad the federal government doesnt have immunity from being sued for breach of contract. I have seen the letters Dave is talking about and read the rules. A good lawyer could shred the Education Department and tear them a new butthole. If a citizen makes an agreement with the government, both sides must honor it or they are liable for breach of contract.

I went to a college that I could afford to pay for myself by working. No student loans. My husband took out student loans before we were married and we have spent five years living minimally and paying them off. He ended up with a job that doesn't even require a graduate's degree so it was a waste of money. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Pay attention to the world around you when you are making life decisions. You can't afford 30,000 a year tuition than don't take out the loan. For what? A music degree. Be realistic. A teaching degree...ugh. If you are a doctor and owe 60k in loans than I suppose that's not too bad.

Not for nothing but most people who apply for the student loans is not doing anything wrong they still have to make their monthly payments on time and if it takes more than 10 years then whatever is remaining can possibly get paid off.... some are not as lucky to get scholarships or any other means of free education and had to pay for college since day one.
