For example, it's healthy for parents to show affection like hugging and kissing in front of their children, but it's not necessary for them to openly discuss details of their sexual relations. Likewise, it's enough for their kids to be shown that their parents are financially secure, industrious, prudent, and generous. The kids don't need to know the exact dollar amount in the bank.

I worked with a waiter. It was so sad. He openly told us he was waiting for his parent to die because he was going to inherit all the money. He lived with the "yolo" attitude. Spent every cent he had on crap and money he didnt have. A few years later, I heard through a mutual friend that he was angry as the parent passed away and he didn't end up getting near what he expected. He's verging on bankruptcy. It made my heart so sad. Imagine waiting for something like that? Not trying to make the most of what time you have left together building memories? I dread the day I recieve inheritance. It means I've lost someone I love dearly. I'd rather my parents around than any amount of money.

My mother is 82, and will leave me a modest inheritance some day that will definitely be of assistance after I retire (I'm almost 58). I'm right with you. I tell the story to everyone that I can....my dad and I get haircuts together. We've been going to the same barbershop at the same time for 30 years....I'm in my 40s right now and dad is in his 70s. We are both nearly bald (ok, it's advanced male pattern baldness with a bit in back and the sides, and nothing on top). But, we go together to get our hair cut. Someone will ask why I don't just shave it off...and my response is because "one day, dad and I won't be able to get our haircut together." Maybe he'll be physically unable to, or he'll have passed on, but in any scenario, it's a darn shame and a loss. So, yes, it makes my heart sad that that person you referred to that waited for his parents to die is on the verge of bankruptcy. That is sad that he waited to lose the people that he loved, then is losing the things that he thought he valued and will be left with neither.

I absolutely loved this call. This should be a helpful lesson to anyone who receives a lump sum of money, whether it's an extremely rare lottery win or massive inheritance. I'm so glad that someone like this guy was a lottery winner. He's humble and nice and now he's going to be more of that. When I was in high school, I did this project where you get a fake job and have to budget. It was supposed to prepare us to live on our own. My “job” was just over minimum wage, but because I miscalculated some numbers, I ended up thinking I had WAY more money than I did. I learned my mom made more than that amount (which was low) and ended up thinking she was being cheap and had negative feelings toward her because of it. I had no understanding that it actually costs to live or take care of a family. Most kids will not understand money until they are forced to live on their own. I'm quite lucky exposed to personal finance at an early age, started job 19, bought first home 28, got laid-off work 36 amid covid-outbreak, and at once I consulted an advisor to handle growing my finance. The adjustment was difficult but the thing that hurt me the worst is not having my job be the thing that kept me living a structured life. is really a privilege to have millions in inheritance and is the really smart to raise your kids to not have sense of entitlement so they can work for their own money. when your raise your lids right, their inheritance will be a bonus to them and they will manage it well because they have made their own money and see how hard its to make money. i was left with nothing but i was able to build a 7 figure net worth on my own. made the right investment decisions, save and create multiple streams of income. Great advice about his children and making sure to educate them in the right way so they can handle situations in the future. What a powerful feeling that would be... to be able to make sure your children read the right books, talk to the right people, are given opportunities, learn the right way of handling finances, learn traits and the right character to have. I'm sure it can be performed in an explainable way without too much suspicion. For example you could hire a financial advisor to come and have a family dinner in your home, say they are a friend visiting, then ask questions so your children can hear their advice. Personally I would tell my own children some of it. That I was interested in finances recently, learning more about financial opportunities, and wanted to teach them what I've learnt. Then I would be able to freely share my knowledge with them openly. I would also share the small investments that I had invested in, so I could share with them the small wins, and give them opportunities and encourage (such as asking them to get a job and purchase a $500 - $2000 share with their own money) them to do the same.
