Yeah, we were great at the 30 year mark too, didn't make 38 though. Grey divorce is rising swiftly. From 1979 to 2017, wife 55-64 is up 300%, wife 65 or over 278%. Most men never see it coming. The only advice I can offer, get marriage counseling while you're good because the odds say she won't go before she divorces you.

@@-SP. there are benefits to having kids as well (like tax credits)... but I'm sure that "benefit" is really not a motivator to have 20 toddlers. You're really asking for a financial comparison... single vs married.... here it is... 1- If both spouse make 100k a year Your income tax before and after marriage will be similar ( use a marriage calculator) 2- if 1 partner makes 100k and the other 60k... congratulations you will pay 227$ less federal income tax if married (per year)... this can actually be less (so assumptions were made). 3- if 1 partner makes 100k and the other does not work (0 dollars a year)... congratulations you pay $5446 less federal income tax if married.... that sure looks good if you did not need to financially support another grown adult lol. Obviously the single person will be financially better off. 227$ becomes $12,485 in 55 years... take inflation in to consideration and the amount is not a big deal. From my understanding, Most of the benefits come from working together as a team.... luckily a legal (marriage) document is not necessary for that. Edit: added (marriage) after legal.

Was married for 15 years... she is entitled to 1/2 the marital portion of my pension and 401k. I was also entitled to 1/2 of her 401k. Divorce is tough but best thing to do is to try and agree on everything before the lawyers get involved. Kept our divorce reasonably cheap. Can't say if I would ever get married again, it's been over 2 years now and perfectly happy being single.

If you don’t want to “lose” half of “your” pension to an ex-wife, then you need to be prepared to do half the childcare and half of all the work that goes into running a household, so your wife can go to work and earn her own money and her own retirement account. And then when she divorces you because you don’t do your share of the work, and you waste your time and money on video games and porn, and you’re unpleasant to be around, and you’re as selfish and difficult as a toddler, you can just go your separate ways. 😂

Considering most Americans have no money, I don't know why people think it's such a big deal. This guy barely has any money it sounds like. My husband and I are happily married and started with nothing (we are young and got married young). After 6 years of marriage, we built our net worth to almost 1 million together. We have no debt except mortgage. I work and I bring in more money than my husband some years. By the time we are in our sixties, we will be at least deca-millionaires. We would never get to that if we were single. If it's the right person, marriage is beneficial.

@@timmydevil999 I have a pension like this guy (but I have way more money than this guy in my pension) and my husband has a 401k. We also both have a roth ira with equal values. I have a car under my name and my husband has a car under his name (both cars worth about the same and both pretty old). We have both our names on both our properties. If we got divorced (which we definitely will not), he will get half of everything and I will get half. He will keep one of the properties and I will keep the other (the properties are basically equal in value and if one is more, the one keeping the higher value property will need to pay in cash for half of the difference) and he will keep his car, his 401k, and his roth and I will keep my car, my pension, and my roth. It's even because our incomes are pretty much even. It's always the one who makes more that gets the short end of the deal because things will get divided into half. If there's a kid, the parent taking care of the kid will get more. I know there are situations where the woman doesn't work and still gets half. However, this is why I say, you gotta marry the right person. Anyway, I had to sit here and think about how our stuff would get split up so that was a weird thing to think about for me. We are so happy together and we achieve so much together. Point is, half of the marriages don't end in divorce in America and people who marry the right person do better financially and are happier because they always have someone who is there for them. I'm not saying marriage is right for everyone nor is it something that should be done lightly. I just feel sad that people want to close the door on something that may be right for them by not thinking of it as a possibility at all.

Do not get married is the lesson of this video. Do all marriages end like this one? Of course not, but if you think risking half of your assets on a coin flip is worth it then you're better off spending time at the casino or buying lottery tickets. It'll cost you less. And that goes for both genders in a situation where you make more or have more assets than your spouse. It's just that women are more likely to initiate a divorce than men so we talk less about women not getting married.

There needs to be a much greater benefit and trade off than simply creating the next generation. Otherwise, it’s not worth it. In that case, make money, travel the world and enjoy life. At its base a marriage is also a partnership, and you agree to that when getting married. Just as a 50% business owner if you split up the company you split EQUALLY the proceeds. So tired of hearing that the woman didn't "earn " the money. If you are in a marriage that you don't feel your spouse is working whether on household stuff or a outside job, don't wait 15 years to divorce them.

If they were both in the market place a fair and equitable way to go is to split things evenly. Either way it is not his pension, it is their pension. It is not his house, it is their house. It is not his 401k, it their 401k. Marriage means you blend everything, you promise all your worldly belongings to your spouse. My husband has been working a government career for almost 20 years and he relies heavily on his pension to retire (it’s a good pension too). He is previously divorced and what saved him from losing part of his pension to his ex wife was she drained his other savings account. She could have either waited for him to retire and gotten the pension benefits for life or taken all of their savings during the time of the divorce (but overall worth much less than a lifetime of pension). Thank God she did, we have since built our savings back up. I did sign a prenup stating that I would not take any of his pension in the event that we would divorce. He works up to 60 hour weeks providing the best for us and I get the luxury of staying home with our child. I couldn’t in good faith take his retirement from him even if things ended.

Men don’t marry for money or financial equality. They marry for beauty. Besides, you can marry rich and become poor. The vows say for richer or poorer. You marry your “equal” then he/she loses everything... You’re now the main earner of the family. What can you do?

Didn't realize there were so many bitter men out there. Women are usually he ones who get left at middle age or older after devoting all their youth to a husband and family. I was married for 25 yrs. I had a wonderful marriage. My husband passed away this June. I would gladly give away all my worldly goods to have him back. I loved that man and he loved me.

I advise young people to get a commitment ceremony. Many minister’s will do it in a church setting. All the bells and whistles. Just do NOT get a marriage license. A license is a legal contract. Many elderly retired people do it so it doesn’t mess up there finances.

Lamont Young well, I know a lot of women who took care of their husbands, their house, their kids, they worked 50 hours a week as a stay at home mom which IS a job and worked weekends. The husband only worked at the office and worked less than the wife.....so, yes she deserves part of what he saved because he NEVER paid her, or men can just pay the woman a paycheck for services rendered then she can invest or save herself. It is not cheap to pay a person for cooking, cleaning, chauffeuring kids, getting up in the middle of the night for kids, taking kids to school and picking them up, laundering, parenting, tending the yard, etc. or calling for some of these services and coordinating. it was determined a few years ago that it would cost approximately $60,000 a year to pay for these services, so....or both work and split all housework or hire help.

One of the funniest things about men wising up to the reality of marriage is reading all of these post-wall women whining about "where have all the good men gone?" and commiserate about how they'll never be the center of attention in their own wedding, have someone to nag, and have their own organic ATM. This is why feminism is so focused on turning the Federal Government into their substitute husband.

Ten years ago I tried to get a divorce in Virginia. Went to my local lawyer's office and they told me my wife would be getting half of my 401K. Not music to my ears. They told me for another $2500 they would compose a special form for her just to look at, which was just some BS I know she would just toss in the waste can. I sadly walked out. I went to another lawyer and all he told me was "You'll get something." I could have gotten the same answer if I just asked Joe down the street.

Also, it’s very possible that 60k is a surrender value, more close to amount you contributed and not reflecting employer contribution (which you cannot take out if your public employee).. but actual payout might be given by a formula like 2% x number of years of service x final salary -> paid out per year (California has something like this)… and so you really need to calculate present value of that,… but in that case paying 1/4 of surrender value ($15k) would be much better than basing on a present value formula.
