Right, just don't rent to family or friends. Or even lend money. My nephew recently called out of the blue wanting some money because he was unemployed. I didn't believe it either. Then I became that* person who kicks the family out. It was one of the worst experiences of my existence. Extreme irresponsibility is damaging. I'm still sick about it because I saw the way it affected kids that were involved. And I learned the hard way that I cannot ultimately save people from themselves. Incredibly painful and humbling lesson to learn...but I guess it's also important to learn it. I pray to God that I can impart to my kids this lesson so that they never have to be that* landlord or that* tenant.

Yeah I’m 22 living with my folks still but I’ve been saving $270 a week for a down payment on a house and $10,000 will go towards my emergency fund. Helping your kids save by not charging rent while they’re still at home is the biggest kind of help you could provide financially (as long as they’re actually saving) I just wish I didn’t start so late. But I’ve learned a good lesson from it because I know my plan for my children when I do decide to become a father is for them to save money for a house or college while they’re living at home.

@Sugar&Spice and a kid. You could compare on contrast like this family does this and that. so why don't you do it, but this situation was two sides to it. On one you want your kids to have the best start possible on the other you may need help with cost of living. By allowing a person to stay work and save. You give your children a better chance at survival as long as they do save. Thus allowing the person to be fully independent and able to fend for themselves not having to live pay check to pay check like so many people do in this world. Yah you can say money isn't everything yada yada, but at the end of the day you got an E fun for 10gs o no life hits you okay... compared to o no life hits now im 10g in debt cuz I can't afford the house payments, school, car, transportation to work, backed up on bills? Do you really want that for your children? or Future generations?

She says she has money enough. My rich nephew just gave his kids a house. But he has a girlfriend. She should work too. My dad helps me out for his grandkids, but not a partner who doesn't want to work. I wouldn't mind paying everything for my sons if I could and they work. I'd go live in a room and give em my house if they work and their wives work. But for a girlfriend who just wants to stay home.. nope. They won't have those though. The son has made some adult choices that aren't productive for him being independent and responsible. He is 22, chose willfully a low paying job, is shacking with his girlfriend, and they have a child together. Not really very responsible, but what is done is done. Mom is trying to be helpful by charging them less than market rate rent, but the two adults living there must feel entitled or can't afford to be out on their own and take care of their child. But whatever the reason, mom is NOT responsible to pick up the slack and support them. It is nice to want to do it for the grandchild's sake, but long term it breeds more entitlement and irresponsibility on their part, and contention in their relationship. Selling the house is an excellent choice, but if mom needs it has an income property, giving them 2-3 months of rent free living and then requiring them to move would be best. Good advice Dave.

When I was pregnant with my firstborn, my dad gave me the best advice. Don't get so caught up in raising children, that you forget you are raising future adults. That child now puts himself through school working 3 jobs so he doesn't have student debt. My other son has CHOSEN to pay rent since he got his first job at 17, contributing to other expenses too. That son was a born capitalist LOL I was a single mom making little, so I could not give them allowances. So he would ask me to buy him a thing of cool press on tattoos at the Dollar Tree. He turned around at school and sold each tattoo individually. He took the money he made from those, put some aside, and used the rest to buy more to sell ( Mind you this was in 2nd grade ). That carried through high school when he'd buy day-old donuts and sell them one by one. Turned a $1.50 investment into $12.00 a day. I'm glad I listened to my dad! I think you would have gotten along great, Dave!

I’m 24, single with no kids and still live with my dad and I pay about $230 a month for my part of rent/cable and I also pay my part for utilities, so all together I pay like $300 a month, but the bills are also split 4 different ways (since there’s 4 people living here)

This can end up sticky. Maybe she doesn't want to sell the house. Maybe she would be much better off renting it for $1,100 while it increases in value over then next years. And if she doesn't sell it, then she is a liar and a manipulator. If she does sell it, if that's only because Dave told her to, she may regret it for a very long time, because that was not her plan, it was Dave's, and she will feel that she was forced to do something because her son put her in that situation. It's a lose-lose. I say give them one month to pay the rent, or start eviction procedings the way you would with any tenant if they refuse to leave on their own. Being a landlord is a business, it is not a charity.

Selling the house is a bluff, as soon as they move out she can rent the property and he can become a man. But, it will probably end his relationship. Once his girl loses some of the financial freedom she has she’ll start to blame him and then boom relationship is done.

It reminds me a little of a situation I know - only it may be worse. My mother is so narcissistic that she’s gifting my sister a home a few doors away from her, that my sister can’t likely afford - although it’s mortgage free. My sister is used to working 4 jobs to hold onto a 1 bedroom apartment. My sister has also barely been present for decades, while I’ve been putting in all the work. But, as my mother doesn’t like an independent 50+ year old, she’s decided to scapegoat me and will not likely leave me the house she currently lives in. So, my sister doesn’t realize that she’s being used as a bat to bear me over the head with. I’m staying away from the whole thing. My mother and sister will likely kill each other at some point. But, for now, they’re huddled together, feeling that I’m all they’ve got and that I need to take abuse from them. That, although I’m the one with most of the information about the family business, I need to give it up - and still expect abuse.😆 At least this woman owns the home her son lives in and can sell it. My MotherShit to sign over the deed and I bet my sister is ready to run to the bank (my mother), every time she can’t pay property taxes, electricity, heat or for other repairs. Then, when the SHTF - they probably think they’re going to come to me, stuck living in my 1 bedroom and actually ask for help!😆 Then, they may think I’m going to help provide care for my mother - on the off chance I haven’t been future faked into thinking I’ll inherit anything - after my mother gives her the other house OR she completely loses her narcissistic mind and my sister signs that deed over to herself, too! Tweedle Dumb and Tweedle Dee with a “plan”. They don’t know, they’ve both alleviated me from ever lifting a finger! I’d much rather never see that wicked pair ever again! 😂😂😂

Better yet. Tell him you can't afford the property and your putting it on the market. When the house sells your will give him $1000 for a deposit and once he is out another $3000. I use the word "afford" not in the money sense, but it the worry and stress of your relationship with him. From that point on you can not longer "afford"" cash gives except for planned events like birthdays and Christmas that have a set amount in your budget.

My brother told his girls that they needed to pay rent if they lived with him. He understood that his girls needed to see that money leave their account like it would be if they lived somewhere else. One out of four girls got the blessing. The one who stayed and respected the rules received most of that money back. My brother was saving it for my niece. He thought that she might blow through the money. So she was already accustomed to paying rent before moving to her first place. She had money for moving expenses and more from dad because she listened.

What are some cheaper alternatives to renting? Are there websites where people show the rooms they are renting? I've seen some ridiculous numbers here in NJ for simply renting a room. Like $900-$1100 range. For that money, i better have access to everything. Otherwise it's a total rip off.

He makes about $700 before tax every two weeks and has a child. She wants him to put up the $520. Okay, so he now has about $400 a month on top of whatever the girlfriend makes to get by with a child for an entire month. The Mom has every right to kick him out, but she couldn’t afford the house before? It sounds like she’s not saying everything. Charge your kid rent, that’s your right, but at 22 with a kid, I don’t think he really has a lot of options right now. He obviously is at fault for that, but she seems so ready to cut her son out of her life. If she evicts him they may never talk to each other again.

Well, heck ... I have BEEN that son - sort of. In my case I was offered a room downstairs to live in while I started my first year of college after leaving the military. Out of state tuition was tough. (On hindsight, I should have worked for that year and started the following year. Live and learn.) Anyways, it was rent free. A couple years later my parents' financial situation changed and they told us they were going to have to sell the house. (My little brothers also stayed there to do their first years of college). We never gave them grief. We all found roommate situations. The free ride was over. But it did give us a start. I kind of wish my parents had made us pay rent from the start. I would have paid it or moved out. I would have never made them evict me.
