Yeah, I'm not getting it. Of course, I never had a "dream" wedding plan, but I've heard there are a lot of women who start "dreaming of the day" when they are little girls. Again, I just don't get it. How about a small wedding and a reception meal with close family and friends, then saving up throughout the year and having a big one year anniversary bash? Or just push the day back a year and save like crazy for the dream wedding? Why is that a problem? They are both young so an extra year shouldn't such a big deal to get the dream wedding.

I'm 2 years after this post and I hope like heck that you haven't married that bonehead. She is clearly a controlling creature who will play the victim and shame you to get what she wants for herself only. That shows a lack of empathy. Never let emotional blackmailers control you, ever. As for Ramsay's suggestion that you go and see a Christian counsellor, absolutely do not go and see one of those religious nutters. They will lead you down a road of destruction. Get all of that religious crap out of your head.

As a wedding photographer, this is a massive red flag. I've photographed almost 100 weddings and less than 30 of the couples are still together after two years. I've learned to see a lot of the red flags before the wedding even happens. The fact that she's prioritizing the price of the wedding over actual happiness says a lot about her. My late husband and I decided that we wanted to start out together without debt. We paid cash for our furniture and my car. He had a company car. We also wanted to have a few dollars in our pocket. I got married in a $40 dress that I made myself and I got my shoes for only $4 because the store wanted to get rid of the size 4 shoes that didn’t fit anybody but me. We stayed married for 40 years until he died 2 years ago. He left me with multiple paid off houses and cars and an income for the rest of my life. When he died, we didn’t owe a penny to anybody, and I am still debt free. He was a good man that treated me very well and handled money responsibly. I really miss him.

When we were planning our wedding with my loved one, we decided not to invite ANY friends, because once we’d invite someone, others would feel bad for not getting an invitation. So, we ended up buying a suit for him, a dress for me, and invited only my parents( his were outside the country) and a good photographer. We registered our marriage and had a dinner at a good restaurant in a very small circle. And an amazing photo session. So happy for the choice we made back then, almost 6 years ago.

Just like Dave said or maybe just implied, the money may not actually be the root issue for her. Throwing a whole relationship away without at least TRYING to work it out is a crying shame for both people involved. They've clearly built a foundation, and there is some level of affection there: why throw that away at the first major hurdle? What if they talk and the conversation goes really well and the relationship is not only saved, but is stronger for their efforts? And if the conversation goes poorly, well, then they need to ask themselves if it IS time to leave.

Im grateful I got married in 1996 & we never even thought about borrowing money 💴 for our wedding 💒 we just paid cash for everything!! Then after my 1st hubby passed away, I meet my 2nd hubby & in 2008 I did the same! Paid cash 💵 for our wedding 💒 let’s be more concerned about a successful marriage than a expensive wedding 💒

Some ladies just really want a wedding and a baby like some kind of checklist. They don’t really care if it’s the right time or right person. I was with one of those before, it didn’t turn out well.

And once this military girl has a baby there goes her income. If she doesn't have family helping her with the wedding, shes not got family to stay with your child while on deployment. I was a psychologist for the CAF, and there are so many predatory women around soldiers who then hate the life when he's on deployment. Rare to meet 2 active so,diers married and have children, doable, but requires effort. Total speculation on some of this marriage pressure is, it's her way out of the MI.itary and delaying it financially, means longer in her job. .?

There's a bunch of red flags: - She demanded her dream wedding which means he has no say over anything on his own wedding day! - They earn about the same and she forks over 4K and he's supposed to come up with 16K. How is that fair (especially considering that his ideas regarding the wedding are not even deemed worthy of consideration)? - The ultimatum in itself. She obviously is not interested in solving this TOGETHER as mature adults in an equal partnership, she just wants you to do as she says. Run, Forest, run!

$16K is not much but both of them are not making that much. Making $34k a year and spending $20k a year for a wedding is not reasonable for me😢

It’s not the amount of money, only. It’s the fact that she wants this wedding more than she wants him. If she truly loved him. She would want him to stay out of debt and put the money away for their future. Not crippling with debt yet again.

I got married in my backyard. Best wedding ever. I think we spent maybe $4k on everything in. Everyone had a good time and we are still married with a bay and a house.

4K is not that bad for a wedding. That can be saved in a few months after factoring in bills.

We also were married in our back yard, the mayor officiated, family and friends brought over food for the "reception" and my Mom baked the cake. It was nice, we spent $450 on the entire thing including a few days in Lancaster PA and Harpers Ferry WV. Add about $350 for the rings that was all we spent. That was 1985, inflation and all but that was low cost even then. We are still together 37 years later, two kids both stable and with good employment. I actually feel sorry for couples that spend wildly for weddings and honeymoons, while a nice photo opp and feeling special for a day it is a very bad way to start a life together creating a big financial burden for themselves.

My wife and I also got married in your backyard (you and your wife were on vacation). I'm so grateful your backyard was so nicely landscaped and had nice porch furniture. You may have noticed that your outdoor grill was even cleaner than you left it. I even took the trash bin to the curb, which you may have noticed when you came back from your vacation. I am grateful, afterall, so cleaning up after ourselves was the least I could do.

The weddings supposed to be paid by the woman's family. The groom doesn't pay for anything. If she wants a "big" wedding that's on her. Most marriages last then 5 years anyway - so don't waste your money. If she throws a tantrum like your sister, she can leave.

Welp... I guess this relationship is toast. It might be best to admit that another guy can have the privilege of satisfying this woman. Even if the price of the wedding is reasonable, as a man, it's best not to get pushed around without good reason. Just tell her it's important that she's happy, but that you don't have to be the one to make her happy.

$16,000 is an expensive wedding if you're only making $35,000 a year. It's all relative. Thank God my fiancee's parents are paying for the wedding (the whole traditional "the bride's parents pay for the wedding") because I told my fiancee I wouldn't blow a bunch of money myself on a one-day event when we can put that into buying a house.

I was in the Air Force in the 1980s/1990s, and saw this several times. Half the time....the guy just said that's it....tossed the wedding and walked out. I understand where these ladies are coming from, but if you go into serious debt over this.....it just creates resentment. Me? I'd walk away and just say it's a lesson learned.
