He did not specify a timeline in which the car needed to be sold. She could keep the car, make $2000 per month during the Summer, pay down the debt so that she isn't upside down anymore. When the school year starts sell the car, and take a small personal loan (if needed, other use leftover cash from Uber) to purchase a $2000 - $4000 vehicle and then add the loan to the snowball. Apart from that, it's NOT impossible to find a used vehicle to do Uber Eats, Doordash, Grubhub, Instacart, Postmates or Amazon Flex. He offered very good advice, but I also understand not everyone is a solution focused thinker

Hold on, if she gets a $2000-$3000 car, she won’t be able to Uber. Uber car needs to be 10 years old or less. I highly doubt she can get a car less than 10 years old for $2000-$3000. She can prob do Uber eats or doordash. To substitute for Uber rides..

Uber and DoorDash…. If you really calculate the cost of the 🚗 car, depreciation, all that…. Drivers don’t come up a head. Your mileage might vary. You better use every dollar calculator on your side hustle and see if you are making. Time spent, Car Depreciation, Income earned Tax, Gas spend…… Opportunities cost 💲 As school teacher it might be work as online tutor. No upfront cost…… just time…. There are people who will pay American just to learn English overseas… over online. Fact that she is a teacher is big plus. Online tutoring, on subject to a she knows, Be tutor for english for foreign students… I hope she leverage the skill that she already have. She sounds like kind, understanding, and patient person who has capacity to listen. She is worth more than uber driver who barely makes minimum wage.

Not a bad idea....but like it or not, it might not be as reliable as Uber or IMO more desirably UberEats/DoorDash/Instacart etc ( I'd perfer the non ppl INSIDE my car with me thing) The reason the delivery-for-hire is higher on the list, for the RIGHT-NOW time being vs the slow-maybe build up gig....is More reliable, steady right-now opps to CREATE 💸 It's also less mentally taxing, just to GRIND it out for said 💰 Once the Debt KILLING stage is over that's a "cute" side stream but right now is hands DIRTY n Deep time... Perhaps not "pretty" but what can be DONE, no "hope", no 'try', what shovel can be picked up and used to DIG, Deep between Tomorrow & X-mas, period! Making nice Quilts & Tutoring might be 'cuter' but we're PAST, cute....it's time to Grind

When they give you their estimate, if it’s lower than carmax, tell them you have a higher offer with carmax and they will pay you. There is a chip crisis right now and they can’t make many new vehicles so they are paying top dollar for used cars. Now is the time to do it.

I understand. My breaking point was I borrowed money from a friend. A LARGE amount. Albeit they had it but if I had my act together I wouldn’t have to ask on a short period of time and a large amount. I was mortified since I never want to treat friends as a ATM. I paid it back but it was stressful owing the money more than my regular bills.

That’s one big problem I notice with the advice given on the Ramsey show. Seems like they always talk so generally rather than look into the specifics of the situation, and in doing so, often miss out on details that make their advice impossible. “Just go deliver pizzas at night and make an extra $20k a year”, is not very helpful advice if you don’t look into the specifics of the situation.

She won’t make $2k extra per month working Uber AND teaching!!! During the summer she can make $2k which means $6k total after which she can maybe make $1k/month on top of her teaching job. Also, she can’t Uber in a $2k car because one, it’s not reliable enough and two, I wouldn’t get into a $2k car as a customer. Unrealistic advice based on unrealistic information. She needs to sell the Cherokee to a private party and use the money to buy a NEW reliable subcompact car like a Corolla. Why? Because it’s reliable, has very low maintenance, AND is presentable to Uber customers. Basically, her solution is to work, either for Uber OR find a better paying teaching job. BUT perhaps what’s more important is how she manages to spend so much money on living expenses. Sounds like she can downsize and cut back on expenses. Also, she shouldn’t have a business right now.

Uber requires the car to be above a certain year. A better option to do with an older vehicle is doordash ubereats grub hub, etc. there is no minimum year for your vehicle on those platforms.

If you are going to sell to get out of an upside-down auto loan, NEVER go to a stealership and avoid the wholesellers. Sell it privately using the classifieds. And buy the next one off the classifieds too (just make sure to look for obvious issues and if it still looks good pay a local repair shop for a mechanical inspection)

I'm a Special Education teacher and I make good money on the side doing remote tutoring. The bare minimum rate I accept is $55/hour which is extremely generous, you can charge $100+/hour for specialized tutoring

Uber requires a newer car. So that’s out of the window now with the Cherokee sold and the cheap car purchase. She needs an alternate way to make extra income.

Buying from CarMax is lazy. Use them to research prices or test drive and negotiate a better deal with someone who will negotiate.

Uber on a car that costs 2k? I doubt a car like that would qualify. Even doing delivery service can end up costly because the car could need many repairs due to extensive use.

She can’t do Uber in a 2k car! I’ve done Uber for a while. You have to have at least a 10 year old car or newer to do it.

One issue is, if she buys a cash car, and it doesn't meet Uber's requirements for condition, age, etc, she won't be able to do Uber with that car.

It would be helpful to explain the proper way to sell a car private sale. There's only a few right ways and many wrong ways. A crook would be more than happy to steal a car from a person on fire to get out of debt. Thanks Ramsey Team.

Problem with that is, she will ask for her payoff, not the actual value of the car. Which is way less. She will be offended at real value offers. However any dealer can work magic and make that negative equity disappear and reappear on a new loan!

My husband just bought a 43k vehicle so he can do the premium rides. He claims it is going to pay for itself. We will see. Don’t do it. There are so many other jobs hiring that are offering bonuses and you won’t have to get into more debt.

The 2500:car idea is an expensive mistake. If you can do your own work, it's not so bad. An old car like that will have lots of issues. I tried it and got a complete pos. I say she just keep the vehicle and apply everything from Uber to just pay it off.

I agree with what Anthony said about trying to privately sell the vehicle. However I feel like she should try to do online tutoring. Make a good bit of money doing that hustling during the summer and while school is in session.

Can't do Uber in a $2k vehicle. Why not drop the side hustle and drive 80 hours/week until school starts? Probably could pay off most of the car by the fall. Then keep driving Saturday/Sunday for extra cash and start chipping away at the other debt.

Better idea is the pay the current car down to the break even point, go back to CarMax and sell it (Anthony walked right past that part unfortunately), then figure out what a “cheap” used car currently costs ($2-3 grand is going to be challenging but possible).

Exactly. Here in Dallas my girlfriend (first year teacher) is doing summer school and they're paying $30/hour for 2-4 weeks. They're practically begging for summer school teachers. Could be better than driving for long hours picking up strangers
