That is a harsh judgement on the mother. What you fail to recognise is the sexism element, and grandson, being male, is seen as 'responsible', whereas women are considered 'just women' when it comes to that stuff. So the mother played it to get the result, telling her son.

Why not talk to grandma about becoming her financial DPOA and legal guardian? Grandma’s already in her 70’s, and is only going to get older. Clearly this man has integrity, and the financial security to help her. He’s already purchased the home from her at the cost of the remainder of the mortgage, did some improvements, and lets grandma live there for only utilities. She can clearly trust him to advocate for her. If grandma agrees, and he gets financial DPOA, “auntie” now knows granny ain’t calling the shots anymore, and that this man will not allow her to abuse her mother. And if grandma is every approached by auntie to be used as her cash cow, granny can shrug and say “you’ll have to speak with Phillip... he controls my money”. I understand that this shouldn’t have to happen, but some people are weak, and clearly this guy is capable of the task.

It amazes me when people view money their parents have as their "inheritance", its not, its their money to do what they want with it, it becomes an inheritance when the person dies and is left to you in their will, not before. Not being greedy and assuming someone else's money will be yours will save you a lot of aggravation. The Aunt is not going to go quietly. I'm guessing this isn't the first time Aunt has needed money and guilted people into giving or just taken it. People who are used to being enabled don't like it when the enabling stopped. Grandma is a people-pleaser and an enabler who will be desperate to keep the peace. This poor man is about to "the bad guy" who "breaks up the family" or "thinks he's rich so he's better than everybody." I hope it ends peacefully, but enabled people rarely go peacefully.

Multiple notes for you sir! I handle the finances for my husbands almost 90 year old grandmother. All of her children have passed. Get your grandma on food stamps. We did and it helped her margin a little bit. Maybe get access to her banking-so you can check frequently and make sure nothing fishy is happening. Put yourself on the bank account if she will allow. I no longer allow her to make poor financial decisions. We try to leave her some autonomy but at the end of the day I’m footing the bill for SO many things so it’s not just a free for all anymore.

I am so sorry, I cannot imagine. My mother passed 9 years ago when she was only 60. My father lived alone for 4 years after she passed, and it was not good. He’s capable, and very stoic - and we could still tell it was getting dark. My husband and I live in the same town, we sold our home and moved in with my father (we had a two year old and I was pregnant when we did). My older brother is single, lives two hours away, and works a lot. I did all of this while keeping my brother in the loop, he was relieved when we moved in with my father. The light came back to my dad quickly having such a sweet toddler for a grandson, six months later out other son was born. My father has seen these boys daily since July of 2018. We ended-up buying the house from my father. It is financially beneficial to all of us, but there’s also peace of mind that my father will always have a roof over his head (which wasn’t really a concern as he has always been financially responsible), a hot meal on the table, and a family looking out for him. But I keep my older brother involved because I would never want him to feel out of the loop. I am so very sorry that your brother is not behaving honorably.

Had the same kind of brother. I got poa. With mom, create a weekly, monthly budget for her. Give her cash weekly that fits her budget. Access from any other money is NOT in her house. I told her, that if brother asks for money, she could show him she had three envelopes with money. One is for getting her hair cut and paying her apartment cleaner. Another is for food. The third is the left over money from the month before. The most she could give him was the third envelope. If he really needed more, she will call me to come over and he can explain his need. I think, the only money he was "given" by me, was a couple of medical bills, where I told him to give me the bill and I paid it directly. It helped my mom becuase she didn't have to say no.

Why do people tolerate bad behavior from family? I get that this is your family, but that doesn't mean they should be able to get away with committing crimes. After all, every serial killer has a family.

I really hate when people are manipulating gaslighting people! Anybody who says why are you making such a big deal out of this and trying to act like it's the person's fault who is just vocalizing the problem. The aunt is the one who put everybody in an uncomfortable position she just did it quietly and without being upfront or honest about it

I'd present Grandma with the facts and with options. She can or doesn't have to call the police. BUT her daughter has to be stopped. She needs to be warn that if she attemps any funky business the cops WILL be involved. I would suggest help Grandma a budget for where all her money goes. All cards to those accounts are LOCKED UP. Grand ma has weekly envelopes for purchases that are LOCKED UP in a different place. The only money "laying around" is left over money from those weekly envelopes. Access to any other money for sneaky people is GONE. I also hope Grandma has a POA and plans for her estate. Please get POA, its saved such a head ache for me.

Because my Uncle was the baby of the family, they gave him a slap on the wrist when he was stealing from my grandmother. My grandmother was fine with it and signed the house over to him when she passed away. Now he’s got a girlfriend/caretaker that gives him everything he wants. He has never lived away from that house. Ever. He’s a real pile.

Please don’t forget that mental capacity and intelligence may degrade with age, acknowledging this is not disrespectful, but only right in order to take care of elderlies. That’s why “grandma can do whatever she wants to do” may not be a correct approach.

Nevermind you're not supposed to know you need to go pitbull mode and protect your grandma. My great grandma was facing financial abuse from my uncle and cousin when I was growing up. She'd go without proper food because she'd give them money. When my mom found out her grandma was giving money to them and didn't have money to eat she went pitbull mode and dealt with it. Elders can't defend themselves sometimes and can be manipulated, you have to protect them like you would a child. Your grandparents would protect you like that so you need to protect them.

The guy needs to take his granma to the bank & have his name & number on her account as 'agent'. It's still Granma's account but he can set up online banking. Then he gets all her bills sent to him by email. This means he pays all Granma's uitilities online through her account. He sets up Granma with a debit/Visa card where a set amount of money is in the account each week before she can use it. This card can be used on her groceries or personal items. This will be helpful later on if Granma gets forgetful - at least her bills are sorted. Any money left over after the bills are paid is put in a savings account - to go towards a special trip or item Granma may want.
