I just sold a 2014 Dodge Charger that I owed 12k on. Payments of 270.00 a month. I sold it for 14k paid off the loan. Bought a 2001 Subaru Outback from an old couple in amazing condition they kept it up 181k miles but amazing condition. They where selling it for 3k but after they asked me why I was buying it and I told them my family was doing the Dave Ramsey plan to change our lifestyle, they sold it to me for 2k and said they bought this car 10 years ago because of Dave’s plan and that’s what bought them there first house in cash. They told me to pass it on and maintain it. I dropped about 500 bucks into car parts and installed them myself which became a learning experience and I’ve gained a lot of knowledge along the way. IT CAN BE DONE PEOPLE!

That seems a little on the high side for that car, did you go to a dealer? Usually they go for 3k, but that's in Florida. However, congrats on buying cash. The majority get stuck in leases that do nothing but drain your wallet. I just started a business as well, you can do it.

I’m a gearhead and love working on cars. First car was a grandma owned 1982 dodge Aries with 86k miles that I bought for 800$ and I stupidly got rid of it. I now own a 1986 Nissan 300zx that I purchased for 800$ and my 1999 Chevy S10 ZR2 4x4 for 1600$. You can get a decent car at the copart auctions if you look for a 5 - 13 year run and drive condition no body damage, or light hail damage for $300-$2000 you can drive off the lot. If you or a friend can replace a few bumpers, fenders and small parts than you can have good car at a deep discount dept free. There are states where you dont need a dealers licence to bid on copart auctions. You can also inspect the car if you have the action lot near where you live before you bid. I got my self a 2010 GMC sierra 1500 truck about 4 years ago for $7600 with light damage. Changed the driver door bumper cover, headlight and front fender had it painted all came out for under $10000 the car was worth $24k at the time still drive it all dept free. It was low miles too.

For the cost of 3 average car payments I purchased a low mile engine and transmission from Japan that made it feel like new again. I spent about the same rebuilding the suspension. Got a deal long ago on some alloy wheels. Several components have lifetime warranties. I can do just about anything short of bodywork in my driveway. This model is popping up at salvage yards left and right so tons of cheap parts out there. Insurance is balls cheap, I just keep it clean and somewhat presentable. Might get a paintjob in a year or two. 318,000 miles and doing great!

My first car at 16 in 1976 was a 1968 Ford Mustang. It had no power steering(very difficult to parallel park), and bad defrosting, but what a safe car it was! Like driving in a tank. I paid for it with my money working cleaning rooms at a conference center. Kept that car until 1987, when I moved overseas for 3 years.

Where you find the “garage sale car” is parked one or two houses down from the garage sale. It’s not in the garage because that’s full of the other stuff the sellers are trying to get rid of. The garage sale car says “for sale” on the windows and probably isn’t advertised as such anywhere else. While holding a few cheap items, kindly ask the owners of the garage sale car if they could come down in price. This one purchase can save you thousands long term!

Also Dave, those 25+ year old cars that sat in a garage most of their life are almost impossible to find any more. Almost none left. And they have to be pre 2000's. Cars. 1980-90 cars were designed to last for ever and ever. Modern cars are designed to last 12 years before they disentegrate into iron filings like cinderellas pumpkin.

A 1993 Pontiac Bonneville known as the Sparky-mobile because I bought it from a coworker nicknamed Sparky for $500. It was an upgrade from the bicycle I’d been riding. Got 2.5 years out of that car and probably put $1500 in parts/repairs in that time. A customer where I worked was a mechanic. He had a shop on the backside of an oil change place. We’d walk next door to a parts store & I’d buy parts with his discount and he’d put them on for minimal labor charge. I’d return the favor when I could at my work. That car definitely met a need until the engine went bad.

@@rasheemthebestfirstone3274 harsh truth is that there's no "good deals" unless you're taking advantage of someone or someone is doing you a favor. Cars that were not ran almost daily for long distances to boil the water out of the oil and regularly maintained do not make for reliable vehicles. On top of that, with age, plastics and tubing in the car will oxidize and need replacement even with low mileage. Then there's the fact that old cars (say 20+ years like Dave recommends) are also more dangerous. The advice I'd give is to buy a car 2-5 years old. That way, someone else has already eaten the fast and early depreciation, maybe up to 50% of the cars original value. This way, you get most of the good years that cars typically live, before the 12 year old dropoff age where they typically get junked. Drive it until you start to have reliability issues or major expenses comparable to the value of the car (or can afford better and want it). When Dave recommends $500 cars, he isn't the one who has to explain to your boss why you can't reliably make it to work. That said, if you're a student or don't need a reliable vehicle and have money to gamble, buying a junk car might pay off.

I lease a 2016 Jeep Compass right now. It was a 3 year fleece, and the turn in is at the end up April. I just put a deposit on a 2003 Jeep Liberty 4x4. Next week I can turn in this lease without an early termination fee, and I'll be picking up the old jeep next weekend. I've never been more excited about a car because it will have no payments and the insurance is going to be $68 a month. I got the 03 Jeep for $3800 plus tax and registration so $4410. Its not in perfect shape aesthetically but it's perfect in mechanics. I live in Buffalo NY so I really wanted to keep myself in a 4x4 for the snow. The one I found has 109k miles on it and barely any rust. I look forward to saving money for the next 6+ years. I plan to pay off my debts in the next 24 months, finish school next May (cash tuition) and start saving. Then I'll upgrade to a used 2019 Jeep in my favorite color and it'll be around $12,000 by the time I want to buy the new $35,000 Jeep I want :) Playing the long game!

The only downside to old cars like that is deterioration of the rubber components and hoses and fluids sitting. So make sure to look over anything rubber. Check the tires for dry rot too.

Good point -- some older cars were not designed to use gas with ethanol in it. Not sure where the line is, but just to be safe, I go out of my way to get ethanol free gas for my 1993 Corvette (not too big a deal as I only drive it selectively 9 months of the year, so only go through maybe 3-4 tanks of gas). If you buy an older car not designed for E10 and the owner used it anyways, there could be fuel system corrosion that I'm not sure is easy to spot.

Don't mean to come across as pedantic, but short of grey market cars, the internet says the last Ford Granada sold in all of North America was for the 1982 model year. :) Guess someone could've been crazy enough to spend a ton of money to import a '94 from Europe and bring to US compliance though. On another note, drove a 1984 Grand Marquis hooptie for a bit when I was a kid (early 2000's). Rear-wheel-drive, live axle, no ABS, no traction control, relatively high center of gravity, balding tires, and lack of experience = almost 360'd into a ditch making a left turn at 5 mph in the rain. Remember it like it was yesterday. Fun times. :)

U can't buy a cheap car that's mechanically sound, unless you throw luck into the equation. A 1000 hooptee as u call it, is good possibly to Walmart and back. (5 miles) what about someone who has to take their kids and grandkids, or have 60 miles roundtrip thru a big city to get to work. I would like to see anybody reading this to go buy a 1 k car and drive around for a month and still have peace of mind, and I'm not talking to the grocery store 1-2 X a week I agree with Ramsey ALOT, am a big fan but his cheap car mentality is not 1 size fits all

I love my cheap Mercedes! I bought my 2001 E430 a little over a year ago from its original owner; I paid $1,600 for a nearly pristine car with 236k miles. I've put about 19,000 miles on it this past year, and though it's cost me some this past year to keep in perfect nick, it's a darn sight better than stuffing my six-foot-four frame into a similar-condition Toyota or Honda sedan for twice the initial up-front price. It gets me from point A to point B quickly, comfortably, and relatively efficiently (18-19 MPG commute, 25 MPG highway cruise). Shoot, I've even done 135 MPH in that car with absolutely no drama! Do realize that my ability to own a cheap Mercedes cheaply is largely due to my willingness to turn a wrench, though; if you have to take your car to the mechanic for every little thing, a twenty-year-old European auto is NOT for you!

My very first car was a 1996 (10 years old when I got it) Camry that had been in the garage for years after its previous owner had passed away. The rubber on the CV joints rotted out, it had been stationary so long. But I drove that little car for 6-7 years, long past my sibling backing up into it and crushing the fender and door panel on it. Great little Toyota, it was named Dori.

One of the best cars I ever owned was a 2002 Honda CRV. I bought it with 220,000km on it for $2000. I got rid of it 5-6 years later with almost 400,000km on it. I think I had to put $4000 in maintenance (excluding oil changes and tires) into it during that time. It never broke down or left me stranded.

I’m driving my paid for 2004 GMC sierra king cab truck. Mechanically, it seems to be pretty good other than the air-conditioning has gone out, and it didn’t seem fitting to spend the money to fix it… Although the heat of summertime makes me have second thoughts. The thing about it is, it looks like it got attacked by a horde of vicious living walking blackberry bushes! It looks like it ran into a 1000 feet of barbed wire. It’s got superficial scratches and it’s got deep scratches. I’d like to paint it. Get rid of the scratches and make the exterior look nice again, but is it worth it? I am not sure. I largely bought it so I could take my kids camping, with room in the back of the cab for two of my young adult sons, plus it could hall anything I pick up at the Lowe’s store or Craigslist to fix up my house and yard... I’m am largely diying a lot of the house remodeling... leaving plumbing and electrical for the experts... As for giving it a name… I also had thought of old blue… But that hasn’t stuck. I am trying to think of a name that reflects the fact that it’s a scratched up truck...

Ahhh, the used car market before COVID. Now the $500 cars are $4,000. I did however just purchase a $700 Camry with $150k on it. In its current condition it will last maybe 2-3 years (rust). At 21mpg (Camry) I may sell it to buy a Prius (45 mpg). In any car market it’s helpful to learn how to do your own repairs. I keep three cars on the road all with high miles. A year 2000 with 260k. A 2010 with 275k. 2004 with 150k. All Toyota products.

When I was a young Boy Scout we had a Scoutmaster that had an old beat down gray minivan. They nicknamed it the Death Star. Many of the kids loved riding in it just because the name was so funny. But that thing was roooooooough. But it drove well and never had mechanical issues. Went on many campouts with the Scouts and had the Death Star as a mode of transport.

You should easily be able to make it to 250k miles just doing the basic services... I mitigate reliability with AAA. If my alternator or something goes out, I just take off work and have them tow me home. If you're proactive on maintenance (Inspecting belts, hoses, batteries, brakes, lines etc...) you should be able to easily put on another 100k miles.

Bought a 2001 BMW 740il from an old guy for about $2,200 4 years ago. He kept it in prestine condition with all the proof of maintenance. Never had any problems with it other than replacing the battery and new windshields wipers lol. Giving them proper maintenance, they shouldn't give you any problem. Never understood why people call them money pits when I see people with Hondas spend way more money on thier cars than mine. Also it's a beamer so it has all the features even though it's older and drives smooth as a mf.

BMW will never reach 200k-300k like a Toyota or honda I guarantee you. And most folks who mention their German vehicle never had any problems are the ones who lease the car so they only drive roughly 50k miles or less so they don't experience much problems when it gets to 100k onward.

@@MrTmenzo Car is going to be 200k soon without giving me any problem. Recently took her to get everything checked. I was told she was in incredible conditions and how she was really well maintained. I've never had a car die before hitting 200k so I guess it's doing the proper maintenance. Just because you hear about how thier a money trap doesn't make true in all cases. Sure if you buy a 60k+ car you couldn't really afford you can't expect parts to be cheap obviously.

@@teev7 Yeah me neither. My guess was they probably raced the car a lot, stressed the engine, or didn't maintain it properly. I've seen people waste more money on Hondas/Toyotas and other used cars with replacing broken parts bc they got sold a bad car than I've on my car. So many teens/young adults selling Hondas that aren't properly maintained, probably changed original parts themselves bc they think they're mechanics lol. I'd rather put my bets on the old guy who showed me proof of maintnance. Buying cars from old people is the best haha

Find a 00's model toyota anything with less than 200k miles on it, sometimes for as low as 500 bucks. It'll run dang near to 500k if you treat it right.

I bought a 2014 Mazda with 20k miles that was totaled out with hail damage for 5k cash. The damage was purely cosmetic and it has been the best car I’ve ever had. I highly recommend people purchase hail damage cars!!

First car was my grandmothers 1994 diesel Toyota carolla. That thing was great and I basically drove it until it was bout died, drove it to the wreckers. Next car I spent just over $2000 plus the road worthy check from an acquaintance that was leaving the state. 2001 Ford Lazor that had just belonged to an older lady and this friend going to and from work, and I’ll probably drive this one until it dies as well. Rather have a house downpayment than a good car.

The only downside to older low-mileage cars is that coolant, fuel, and vacuum lines (both engine and in some cases climate control) degrade at a rate mostly independent of the car's usage. The good news is that in most cases, they are cheap to replace, and within the skill level of a shade tree mechanic. Except the climate control lines - I've never seen any that I'd call easy to reach. But saving money might require rolling down a window (the "2-60" AC, for 2 windows, 60 mph.)

He gives out good solid advice. However, the tag line about a $30K car turning into a $10K car in 4 years might be accurate for the entire auto industry, but simply not true for some manufacturers. You will never see a Toyota depreciate that rapidly unless their are extremely high miles or it was trashed and not maintained. The majority of Toyota's sold in America are worth at least 50% of their new car price. And some of them will be worth as much as 60% to 70%.

Granny cars are THE BEST. Looks almost brand new but at least 10 years old, and has less than 20k miles. Garage kept, well cared for and maintained because Granny took care of everything in meticulous form, that included her car as well. She only drove it to the grocery, doctor's office for her appointments, church, and the "beauty parlor" for her weekly Friday appointment. My husband has always used these cars for his sales job because he has to drive so many miles, and it's stupid to spend a lot of money for a car to put over 60k miles on it PER year. Another thing about Granny cars is that they are comfortable, while being practical. Because Granny wanted a luxury-like car, but of course was too practical to pay a luxury price tag. So she would always buy the best of both. My husband drives many many miles in his car, so comfort is necessary for his health. Granny cars are not as bad as Dave makes it sound. We have have incredibly amazing cars that looked very nice, but yes it was older and would be the model a grandma would drive! They are extremely rare and hard to find. It's not as easy as Dave says, but what we have had were in great shape, like getting a 10 year old brand NEW car! Truly, it is a God breeze if you can find one. God has blessed us and we have been thankful.
