My wife and I spend more than 1600 per month on vets and pet food (5 dogs, 5 cats - we spent more than 2500 in vet bills in the last 4 weeks)... Since most of that disappears into our grocery bill, the fact that we spend 2400 per month on food, pets and beer isn't that extraordinary). We also spend 1100 per month on medical expenses per month Add all that together adds up to quite a lot!!! (3500*12=42000 per year after tax) ...

Yes I agree. My wife and I spend $300-$400 a month. We also have a one year old. $500 a month is ridiculous! We also eat rice in 95% of our meals. If not, 100% because we’re Asian. Haha

We didn't get into the granular of each other's finances until we were at the stage of ok, we are either all in or calling it quits... the one year mark. @@carla8687 eh, I don't know if that is actually true. She could have never indicated before this that she wanted to be more serious and get married. I think women usually start with the hints (ring shopping, talking about the future, etc.) and then if that doesn't work, the ultimatum type scenario happen. She is so wishy-washy and blasé on the call, it seems like she is three years in with this guy and just now starting to ask the marriage type questions. It's bizarre.

Karey - if you have no debt and a paid-for house, you will find you can live on very little as long as your health expenses are covered. One of the options you might want to consider and talk over with your financial adviser is if you want to draw social security at your full retirement age OR live off your investments and not take social security until you are 70 when it will be quite a bit more.

Peter - if your parents are deceased, you should be characterized as an independent student which should mean virtually everything should be paid for with your low income. Have you filled out the FAFSA as an independent student? Something is wrong with your financial aid if that is your situation, particularly since you are a disabled veteran. With all your situation you should be paying nothing for college. You should absolutely switch colleges - that university was a very bad financial decision and now you have lived in NH long enough to have residency there and should be able to get into an in-state college that also has residential facilities. There is no way you should be paying for such an expensive college for a major that will not result in a high salary. BTW - I am a retired college professor for 35 years and have helped THOUSANDS of students figure out better ways to pay for college. Transfer to an in-state school immediately. Even if you lose credits, you will be ahead financially. Earning more money is not always the answer, because then your financial aid goes down. The university you mentioned is not a traditional private college and it ranks near the bottom of the 178 northern regional colleges and it is a diploma mill. Their graduation rate is only 39%.

Regarding the reference to the viral video about purchasing power erosion, the argument was not that purchasing power should be a function of age. It doesn't matter if they're 54 make $75K or if they're 18. The income itself has far less purchasing power than it did even just 3 yesrs ago, hence why it requires more income to maintain a lifestyle that was once considered "middle class". I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the validity that argument and how many people are struggling.

EVERYONE is now going to grad school for mental health counseling. It's all the rage now. By the time you finish, it will be something else that employers are looking for. Many people who go into counseling are attracted to that field because of wanting to understand their own psychology.

Student loan levels are disgraceful in the USA and the UK is following in your footsteps. In the 90s I had free tuition fees in the UK to become a doctor albeit that our wages in the UK are 5 to 6 x less than those in the US if we solely work in the NHS. These loans are a shackle around students' necks. It is not value for money in most cases. The universities are ripping students off. I'm so sorry for millenials and Gen Z. Life is not fair for you all. The establishment have us all in their grip. I'm also so shocked at car loans that people take out. A vehicle should safely and reliably transport people around, all the rest is just ego unless cars are your passion and you have the spare cash. I love my beat up Skoda which is very reliable. Love the Ramsey Channel, your advice is always so on point. I have my teenage son so keen on listening to your channel too which I'm so happy about. I believe there should be a mandatory school course on financial management for all young people, in keeping with your advice, although I suspect that those in charge like the population being clueless and easily manipulated so it will never happen. Not for physicians, but there are MANY, MANY ways to make college affordable for other courses of study in the U.S. The problem is that students want what they want (what they call "the college experience") and parents love the bragging rights when their kids get into selective (and expensive) colleges - and those two things make people lose ALL reason when it comes to paying for college. People will shop all over town to save $300 for a refrigerator and lose their minds over college loans. Choose better, and if you choose the expensive route, I hope the students enjoy those four years, because they're going to be paying for them for the next twenty.

family of 5 here and spend about $1000 a month on food. If i was by myself I could easily eat for $100 a week. If things get really tight I can feed my whole family on that. I have done it. Bread and peanut butter for breakfast and lunch and rice or noodles with a small amount of meat for dinner like meat sauce or stir-fry. That of course isn't a long term plan but literally lived like that for a long time in my early 20s.

10 x 30 is $300 a week. You could eat Wendy's $5 bag 2 meals and day and do fasting and skip breakfast for less than $600 a month as a single person. You should be able to eat for less than $600 a month if you are single.

Former service people have to fight what the doctors put in their files when they were discharged. They give disability based on the percentage of disability as calculated by the military medical system. If they were rated at 40% disability, they will receive 40% of a full disability. If there is a discrepancy, they must go back and get the disability recertified. A youtuber, Jake Broe talked about fighting it after he was discharged and got his rating moved up due to things the doctors missed when he left the service.

Re: Kennedy- I would start to sell off her properties, one or two per year, depending on market conditions. You’ll get a big tax implications unless you reinvest the proceeds via 1031 Exchanges into DSTs or other income-producing 1031-eligible products.

In addition, if they have time to fill, they should have pre-prepared content that would be a lot more valuable than just chit-chat. They could do an advance survey with listeners and find out what topics people would like to hear more about and then have a set of pre-prepared information on those topics. There are also bound to be LOTS of emails that come in to Ramsey Solutions with comments and questions and they could have a stack of those beside them to answer and comment. You are a generous soul -personally, I think there are other callers waiting and these two just like to talk a lot since they are already good friends (like a lot of women)

Over the 30 years of marriage, as our income increased, the areas of the budget that increased were utilities, groceries, car insurance, car repairs, car sinking fund, gasoline, home maintenance, medical expenses, just your basic items. Recently, we've been able to increase the vacation budget and Christmas budget. We get take out pizza about every three months and don't go out to eat. Neither my husband nor I have "fun money" ( we do have an "entertainment" line item in the budget that rarely gets used).

I'm a lot older than Rachel (53) and my wife and I started with nothing. I haven't had a credit score in more than 25 years. The last time it came up as an issue is when we bought our current house 6 years ago and we just did manual underwriting. And that mortgage is already paid off again, so no credit score again. Yet another person who wants to study mental health counseling. I have been a mental health therapist for 10 years, licensed for 6 years. This degree will not give you the return for your investment. A starting salary in my community mental health agency in TN for a Master's level therapist is LESS THAN $40,000--I do not make too much more than this after 10 years. Pick a degree which pays more than this and which lowers your CHANCES TO BE SUBPOENAED!!!!!! Example: speech-language therapy, physical therapy--All are "therapies" and yet make much more and ask anyone in these areas how many times they have been subpoenaed in clients' custody cases. It is not worth the sleepless nights, the talks with clients about self-care when you know you can't self-care cause you have to work two jobs to pay your mortgage.

I think the advice to the homeless military guy was kinda bad. I love your show but he is homeless he lives on campus he doesn't have a car or anything and he is getting back into the military once he is done with school. He is in ROTC. 25000 is pricy but not the worst and he has a place to live built into that 25000 a year. He obviously was able to pay for some school with what he is already doing given that he had 19000 not 25000 in student loan debt. I think the answer for him is scholarships. Military or veteran or something. He should be applying like crazy to get scholarships or maybe stop with the work study or whatever and get a construction job while he attends since he did that before. He has a plan that seems like it is good and on track he just needs to pay for it. Honestly maybe this is one of the few times I say take out student loan debt until the military takes you back and put 100% of your income back into the loan.

Concentrate on being able to write a sentence that makes sense rather than on the "girls" doing the show. Dave is NOT going to be on every show from this point on. He is nearing retirement, likely wants time to enjoy his life as well as oversee what is now a multi-million dollar business, and has broadened his enterprise to be about more than just his personal financial advice. This is what he says in every introduction, as do the other hosts. We all have our favorites and if the ones on the show on a particular day are not the ones you like, you have other choices of how to spend your time.

Student loan levels are disgraceful in the USA and the UK is following in your footsteps. In the 90s I had free tuition fees in the UK to become a doctor albeit that our wages in the UK are 5 to 6 x less than those in the US if we solely work in the NHS. These loans are a shackle around students' necks. It is not value for money on most cases. The universities are ripping students off. I'm so sorry for millenials and Gen Z. Life is not fair for you all. The establishment have us all in their grip. Love the Ramsey Channel, your advice is always so on point. I have my teenage son so keen on listening to your channel too which I'm so happy about. I believe there should be a mandatory school course on financial management for all young people although those in charge like the population being clueless and easily manipulated so it will never happen. Thank you all for such fantastic advice and entertainment. ❤
