Korn is actually the perfect band for you to analyze. JD has always been very personal and honest with his lyrics. Every song is a reflection of the trauma he's experienced over the years. Really hope you do more stuff from Korn.

“When I don’t have depression..”. I can’t even imagine what that would be like. It’s like waiting for tomorrow- tomorrow is never here. Tomorrow is always a day away. It’s always beyond reach. What we have is making the best of now, planning, and trying to keep a solid perspective on where we are. Enjoyed the reaction

Man I feel this. I've been consistently depressed for more than 20 years so now it's just my resting state. I've adapted and learned to exist with it but I couldn't even imagine a day without it. Even when it's not at the forefront I often describe it as a constant lingering feeling in the background that I've just gotten used to.

You totally nailed it, as per usual. For the video the band starts off being the epitome of music media marketing in the early 2000s: rap, rock, dance, angry, talented, etc. So the corporates are celebrating how much money they are going to make from the band, and so the band walks off because they have no substance in mind. Then Jonathan is 'dealing' with the paparazzi, Fieldy and Head give away their car to the homeless guy, Jason and Munkey crash their car because it is all superfluous. The best part is at the end when they show up for the backyard BBQ. You have cameos from Limp Bizkit, Orgy, Videodrone, Incubus, Kittie and even a not-so-well known Eminem (when he was with Brown Truckers and Kid Rock) was in it too, because in the early 2000s many nu-metal bands would support each other and it is well-known that Jonathan Davis and Fred Durst have been best friends since either of them first started their music career.

It reminds me of something Kurt Cobain once said in an interview I saw, I can't remember his exact words but he talked about how he missed going into a record store or clothing store with only enough money to buy one thing, and how much more that purchase meant to him when he spent his last dollar on a record he had been excited about for some time, versus having the means to just buy everything in the shop. He felt things lost their value when you had access to whatever you wanted whenever you wanted it, and I think he was onto something now that we are in the digital age and seeing the results of how people are negatively affected by choice overload or ennui.

Warning, long post. Oddly this song pairs well with my father's (RIP) favorite poem. It's called "the station" by Robert Hastings, a Illinois born Baptist minister and author. My dad used it in a presentation he would often show. It was so central to his character that we even played it at his funeral, hearing his voice one last time deliver this message inspired me to make changes to improve my own well being. It's a lesson, similar to this song, that I think, hope, will help others as well. It's out of print, so I'll share it here, may it help others as much as it helped me. Tucked away in our subconscious is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the continent. We are traveling by train. Out the windows we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls. But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day, at a certain hour we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there so many wonderful dreams will come true, and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering - waiting, waiting, waiting for the station. “When we reach the station, that will be it!” we cry. “When I’m 18.” “When I buy a new 450SL Mercedes Benz!” “When I put the last kid through college.” “When I have paid off the mortgage!” “When I get a promotion.” “When I reach the age of retirement, I shall live happily ever after!” Sooner or later we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us. “Relish the moment” is a good motto, especially when coupled with Psalm 118:24: “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” It isn’t the burdens of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today. So, stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough -- Robert Hastings "The Station"

You should explore the Ethel Cain lore. She touches on some heavy stuff and Ethel Cain is actually a whole character. Ptolemea is off Preachers Daughter. Apparently, for this one song, she takes drugs and this voice comes over as if she is hallucinating. There is a section of the song where she gives out a deathly scream of Stop. By the end of the entire album she gets kidnapped and then killed which August Underground is supposed to be about and it’s based off a movie. The very last song I think is where people believe Ethel goes to heaven. Also look into The God, the message is deep as well. Her song Famous Last Words (Ode to Eaters) is about having an unhealthy obsession and relationship over someone you love and beg for them to stay and eat your entire body to be a part of them, I heard it’s a weird cannibal type song.
