If you thought the relationships in the first Twilight were bad, well... they don't get better in New Moon. We just add some new layers of abuse, control, lies, manipulation, and codependency!
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright struggle to articulate just how toxic these relationships are, and just how hard it is to understand the actors because they don't articulate! There's a healthy dose of cringing and laughing at the unhealthy doses of lying, leading people on, and mumbling lines. And some good insights for how to healthily deal with breakups and relationships.

The third book seemed like it was there to convince everyone that Team Edward was the best choice by assassinating the characters of both Charlie and Jacob. Like the author was punishing anyone who dared stray from the intended path.

Seriously - guys that complain about the "friend zone" are usually kinda douches. They think because they're nice to a woman that she owes him sex and a relationship. It's part of a BS "nice guy" narrative that's based on what, exactly? Because you're not as dickish as Joe Football? Please.

I remember being about 19 and reading the Hunger Games books. They were really great, and then I brought it up to a coworker at a freelance job and she said, "So team Peeta or team Gale?" I was like, "What??" Turned out most everyone reading the books were enjoying the story for a perceived love triangle, which is exactly what Panem was into. Not crapping on anyone who enjoyed the relationships in that series, but from my perspective it was like 5% of Katniss' actual wants. Whatever conflicting feelings she had about them (mostly Peeta), it seemed like she was just trying to not die and win the day. There's a romantic element as part of the subplot, sure, but I just never understood how people took it as an actual romance.

@@wherefancytakesme Right?? To my understanding, Katniss never had romantic feelings for _either_ of them, and really only started loving Peeta that way when they talked more, and went through hardships together, and were there for each other. Y'know, when they actually started building a relationship? I don't think she ever had romantic feelings for Gale; her kisses and connections with him were to make him feel better, like it was initially with Peeta (although that was additionally for show). Obviously Peeta and Gale both liked and loved Katniss, but for it to be a love triangle (or more so a love corner) the feeling needs to be mutual, hence the line drawn between two characters in that diagram. (If people like Gale x Katniss that's chill, but I don't see how that was a love triangle)

Bruuuh same! And he's a COP so assuming the worst should be his default ... I wouldn't say he would "send her to therapy" because the book was written in like 2005 & it wasn't as trendy to see therapy then plus generally gen X parents were taught therapy is seeing a "shrink" with all the negative connotations that come with that word (or so I have been told). But I'd be so pissed if I was Charlie like his behavior made sense up until Bella showed up with a broken hand because she tried to punch Jacob off her and then Charlie congratulated Jacob... It felt ooc for Charlie if he's supposed to be a decent dad.... I would have killed Jacob too at that point. In short I agree with your comment! ♥️

Well as someone who has childhood somewhat samd as Bella I can tell that I was even afraid of having friends. Cause you always fear if you get friends or bf/gf like your parents. And then self defence kicks in and even if we have friends after some time you started to go away from them into your misery again. And that's because mind is so messed up from childhood and this problem can't be solved just in days or months. People like us took so much time to heal from that years of trauma. And I was only lucky that I was undesirable and had trust issues which kept me away from red flags when I was a teenager but most of teenage girls such as Bella are not lucky. And they find another damaged people like them just so they would be understood. I mean I literally had two friends who had problem with their father just as me. And only found peace with them until I got how we are just not compatible with each other accept common mommy & daddy issues. So we are not that close friends anymore.

I'm going to defend Bella's treatment of Jacob here. I got accused of "leading guys on" in highschool for being friends with them and then not wanting to date them. You go very quickly from a little kid who can be friends with any other little kid to the expectation being that hanging out with boys has a romantic connotation. And I think too many men think that niceness gives them the right to the girl, when that just isn't true.

I think in Bella's case, since she knew about his feelings and knew she had no plans to date him, she should have had a conversation with him about what this relationship is to her and explain that she just wants to be friends with him.

All the problems in your case would be solved if you just clarified that you're not looking for romantic relationship. In Bella's case she knew what feelings jacob had, she only didn't care. Bella should've made it clear that he needs to stop pursuing her because it won't go further than friends.

I was the abused teen girl thrown across the room, in the emergency room, and yeah, it’s tragic when it happens to people. But that’s also one of the reasons these books make me SO mad, why I banned them from my classroom, etc. Because Bella doesn’t leave, Edward is rewarded for his bad behaviour repeatedly, no one has ISSUES with any of this, and it’s all portrayed as natural, normal, and romantic. It’s. Not. So yeah, no, if this had been a horror story fine, but it’s not and roast away. Do everything possible to discourage the normalization of abuse.

@@cairrean2412 To be fair, I used to give classes a choice when I saw people reading the book: either they remove the book and conversation about it from class (and that means no homework topics on it either) OR I pick one week’s lecture to replace with a discussion about the series, it’s red flags, why what it shows is harmful, etc. If classes voted for the latter, I’d allow scholarly work on the series - but only if it was serious. In the time I taught, I had a pretty even split of classes opt to ban vs discuss the book. The only class I didn’t give the option was my teen summer camp kids (Center for Talented Youth/Hopkins). They got a ban on the book in class AND the lecture - but that mostly reflected the fact they were teens and our classes were 8-12 hour days, and I didn’t want the book around during lunch or breaks. And I did want to teach them it wasn’t a good thing to idolize. Got a lot of parents thanking me for that one.

@@khills I personally don't like the idea of banning books but I like that you give them a choice on whether to ban the book or to have it be a part of the lesson plans. Honestly, I like the option to turn it into a lesson/lecture. It's a great way to teach kids to be critical of what they read and to address more serious topics in a way that makes it understandable/relatable. I didn't read the Twilight books until I was a young adult (I was 22 when I read all 4 books for the first time... my friends had already read the books and insisted I read at least the first book before I watch the movie. I managed to read the first 3 books before the first movie premiered... I didn't have the money to buy the last book until after I had seen the first movie in theatres). Personally, as an adult, I loved the books. It took me 3 days to finish the first one, 2 days to finish the 2nd book, 12 hours to finish the 3rd book, and only 9 hours to finish the 4th book. But as an adult, I was able to enjoy the story while recognizing that in reality, taking away the supernatural elements (if the characters were all humans), that the relationship between Bella and Edward is definately co-dependent, toxic, and not "Hashtag Relationship Goals". As an adult I am able to appreciate the fantasy and keep it separate from reality. The reality being that you should never be that dependent on another person where they become your entire world, forsaking friends and family in the name of "love." There is a difference between love and obsession/infatuation. Bella's actions when Edward and his family leave are dangerous and self-destructive. She puts herself in dangerous situations in hopes to hear/see Edward in her mind... Which taken out of fantasy, in reality that could be the thrill seeking, high risk situations that Bella does or it could be self-harm, which is just as dangerous and high risk behavior as what Bella does in the books/movies. And Edward's behavior is controlling and manipulative. He does some really fucked up things, treating Bella like trash and justifies it by saying he was trying to "protect her." And nobody should be breaking into your bedroom (or even peeping at the window) to watch you sleep at night... that's not romantic... that's creepy, stalkery, and criminal behavior. However, for young kids (pre-teens/teenagers included in that) who don't have the life experience that adults do, who still have young brains that are still learning and developing, it can be difficult to separate reality from fiction and it's easier for kids to idolize and imitate that which they watch and read in media. I think it's a good thing to teach children how to be critical of the things they read, both fiction and non-fiction alike (because it's important to be critical of news sources and to recognize biases in the media when analyzing information). I also think it's an important lesson to teach children (pre-teens/teens) the difference between fantasy and reality. They need to be taught that what is acceptable in a fantasy world is not always acceptable in reality. How else will children (pre-teens/teens) learn what the "red flags" are if nobody takes the time to point them out? And what better way to do so than to look at fictional characters' choices/behaviors and discuss why those choices/behaviors were good or bad? I think those sorts of discussions done in the "safe space" of a classroom are critical to a child's (pre-teen/teen) learning and development so that they can take what they learn in the classroom and hopefully apply it to their real lives and future relationships so that they can recognize the red flags in real relationships early before they get in too deep and are able to walk away from a bad relationship.

@@captsparrowslady Yeah, like I said, the only class I didn't give the choice was my teen group of smartiepants. They got the lecture on /why/ I was banning the books, and I allowed the girl who asked to make it her final project to do so, but I absolutely was not going to have them in my classroom for 8-12hrs a day, 6 days a week. For one, those classes have to move at a fast pace because they're actually academic courses and you only have the kids for six (very intense) weeks, so I didn't want the distraction. But also because of the intensity of the space-summer camp, away from home, long hours in the classroom-I could see a situation where the intensity actually amped up the attachment to the teen romance of it all (teens and forbidden love/Romeo and Juliet, what even is that), and I didn't want to end up with that situation in my lap. We all have those cultural things that mean a lot to use because they happened at a time of high emotion (one of mine, funnily enough, is Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and I was okay with minimizing the chance the kids would form that attachment to the Twilight series.

Exactly! So, so, SO many romantic plots hinge on the sole fact that people aren't having a simple conversation they should be having. It's not just that that conversation would make the movie better, it would completely negate the need for the entire movie to even exist. And it's so sad, because movies are what we grow up with and what we learn from, so no one is learning healthy coping mechanisms or healthy conversational skills from them and we often have to learn those from a therapist. It should be common sense and basic knowledge. It would ruin the entire film industry, perhaps, but still. I have severe difficulty finding movies that I like because I just get frustrated if the obstacles are all caused by two people not talking. I can't feel tension in an action scene that hinges on someone taking an inordinately large amount of time to say something that could've been said in a sentence. Like "don't go that way! You have to trust me!", which should have been "there's a bomb there!", done.

@Jabroniville The abusers don't feel bad, the abuse victims just think they do because their desire for the abusers "love" and fear from the violence is the one thing that binds them to the relationship. "He didn't mean to..." and "It was my fault/I shouldn't have..." Is one of the most common phases uttered by victims of abuse, even to professionals. Icing on the cake? Domestic abuse laws are still archaic. Unless the victim agrees to press charges or the assault happens Infront of witnesses, no one can do a damn thing about it. You could literally listen to your neighbor beat the shit out of their significant other, report it, even record evidence and unless the victim decides press charges,.you get to hear it all over again and potentially worse considering the abuser would blame the victim for the cops being called.

@@kaylawoodbury2308 Some abusers could just be saying that phrase to their victim in the emergency room because they want the victim to think they regret it and come crawling back into their arms. I also wouldn't put it past an abuser to say shit like this in public so people think they're NOT abusive and think they genuinely care about the victim and just "acted out in a fit of anger this one time." But some abusers DO feel bad about the pain they cause, just in a sick twisted way like "How could you make me hurt you? Hurting you makes me feel like the bad guy! This hurts me more than it hurts you" kinda way. So they can still say they felt bad and mean it, they just don't feel bad about the correct things.

@Heather Smith my reply was based on movies, not books. So maybe you are right on the books. I dont know because I never read the books. This is cinema reviews bot book reviews, though. Generally speaking, post-traumatic stress disorder can happen or come out later based on a trigger. Some people dont have signs for decades after experiencing a single or multiple traumas. Additionally, it's a misconception that a breakup couldn't trigger a trauma. Trauma is individual relative. Something emotionally experienced that feels like your dying can trigger it. PTSD is super complex. There are multiple types and multiple ways it can show up in the body behaviors. Saftey is key. So if we look at the movie, bella was safe with edward around and when he levt saftey was gone. Even though over all the relationship was not so good again, it's based on her perspective, her trauma, her bodies way of reacting to this, her bodies way of dealing with grief.

It's so weird and over the top for her to have such an extreme response to the breakup. It would make more sense that it's a response to James and the aftermath. The one minor hitch I'd have with this theory is that she brings up to Edward later that he could have let the bite do its work and then she would be just like them. So would the trauma be involuntarily from that? Or would she have found a way to twist it so it was less traumatic for her and more like a "oh well, better luck next time" deal?

Yes! Especially if trauma and emotional + physical abuse is normal for the young female viewer. I was very obsessed with these books and with the bad boy concept that was so explicit in teen romance and with vampires at the time. I was writing a vampire romance and read as much as I could, and it's strange to look back and realize Edward is one in a long line of hot immortal young men who never matured, and use abusive manipulation tactics to get their victims to fall in love and not realize what's happening. It's the truer definition of Stockholm Syndrome. Now, as an adult, I look back on this and CRINGE so hard at Edward + Bella's crazy relationship. Imagine re-writing the books from the perspective of Bella and Edward with the understanding that their relationship is abusive from the get-go, and how it's about her fighting her way to stay alive around the monsters who try to control her, and her finally breaking free to live her own life and DEFINE her Self without their external validation. I don't hate Bella now, I really just pity her character a whole lot.

Watching this in Corona isolation. And the part where "Edward hurts people to protect them" is so cruel. My ex did the same to me. He told me on Christmas day that he had cheated on me (ldr). Naturally I broke up with him. Months later he got in contact and told me it wasn't true and he had only done it to "burn himself for me" because he didn't know where in the world he would be stationed from work. I've always hated the "it's better if you hate me" trope and having it happening to me felt like an insanely bad movie! Love your videos guys! Very insightful and funny! Edit: Oh also, even when I read New Moon at seventeen I hated it because it just felt so wrong. Of course I wasn't aware why it felt that way. A decade later it made sense

It's silly though, if that was the case they wouldn't be able to learn anything new or form new memories. They would have no concept of time, no concept of how many people they ate so wouldn't be able to learn to control hunger enough to eat animals, not being able to control new abilities. They'd essentially be zombies eternally confused about the changing world around them driven by hunger. For Edward it would be the day he turned, forever, and any kills made would be instantly forgotten. So in twilight if they can learn new skills and learn to control themselves then they can learn about psychology, therapy, and healthy relationships and apply that to themselves. And teenage brain be damned I've known plenty of teens that have had(or are in the same ones they started as teens) healthy relationships or can internalize a new concept and change their way of thinking Immediately

@@brokefangmagepunk3685 Agreed on the whole 'teenage brain' thing. The idea that human brains don't develop fully until 25 is so over-simplified and so far from universally applicable that's it's basically not even useful. They've found children of eight with brains more developed than the brains of some adults of 25. I think they just said something like "In humans, the brain 'typically' finishes maturing in young adulthood, which is to say, 18-25 and certain people seem to have latched onto it as a reason to dismiss the opinions and feelings of young people and both infantilise and disenfranchise them. hopping in a little late, but I wanted to make a point here: I could relate so hard to the scene where Bella rides the motorbike and keeps trying to shake off those "ghosts" or hallucinations of Edward because I felt that way too. (Not exactly, but they paint it really well in the movie). I was in a long-term relationship with a guy (6 years older than me) who was really controlling and possessive (he even told me so). He made me second-guess myself and feel insecure about certain things, things I wore specially (like short skirts or dresses, sleeveless shirts, etc) because he was "afraid of people looking at parts of my body he earned the right to" and many other irrelevant things I did, just because they didn't match his image. He controlled many aspects of my life without me even noticing. I was no longer me. He tried to sculpt me and shape me in the ways he needed to make up for his ideals in a relationship. We broke up recently, and I still have the thought of him constantly watching my moves as if he were a ghost. Being in a relationship with a controlling partner makes you feel under surveillance all the time, it is exhausting, draining, and it's something you cannot grow out of that easily, specially after years of getting "accustomed" to it. To this day, I still struggle with doing things I like just because he once told me not to, but that reassures that the decision I made was for the best even though I loved him deeply. Bella trying to shake off the ghost of Edward while trying to be herself broke my heart because it was a subtle yet alarming indicator of the negative impact he had on her. I empathize 'cause I've been there. And sometimes it feels like that, like a bunch of ghosts just prowling, waiting to eat your will to keep going.

A great alternative storyline to the Twilight saga of abusive and toxic relationships: Bella's abusive bf Edward has to leave Forks. After leaning on her friends for support, Bella discovers she loves motorcycles and working on them with her unproblematic friend Jacob, a guy who doesn't try to control her and would never get upset at being "friendzoned". She becomes a whiz at fixing machines and gets a job at an autoshop. Bella begins to forget about Edward and enjoys spending time with Jacob and riding motorcyles and fixing them together (rather than just watching him do it.) She decides to date Jacob because she realizes emotionally stable guys her age with nice abs are much more fun to date than old, sullen vampires. She also makes time for her friends and realizes that doing normal high school activities with Anna Kendrick and co are life-enriching, and laughing is more fun than pouting and staring into the distance. The end.

That's the only kind of relationships and life she had had for years. I mean even moving in with her dad was all for her mom. Which is probably largely why she has no real sense of self. She never had or took that time to figure out who she was on her own without a heavily dependent relationship. She was starting to foster connections and figure out who she was, while living with Charlie. @LillianaNorthman
@LillianaNorthman 3 жыл бұрын
Here is some food for thought: Alice has visions of the future, the moment a decision is made she sees everything that will occur, her and Edward planned that birthday party, despite Bella outright telling them I do not want to have a party, I am not comfortable with it. They then gang up on her and guilt her into to having one anyway. Alice also decorates the entire house, and put out all of the glass plates that Bella later gets thrown into, plates that dont need to be used by anyone but Bella. In the book Myers describes at least a half a dozen plates stacked up by an enormous cake. If you really put some thought into everyone's actions within that book it shows the lengths that this "family" goes to in order to force Bella into being a compliant little Stopford wife. They knowingly take advantage of a young impressionable girl, over emphasizes the power imbalance between them, give her bits and drabs of affection, knowing that she has none of this from her actual family, (despite how well Charlie is betrayed in the movies, in the book, he is useless, abandons and ignores her) and then when the family see her pushing back, her insisting on becoming one of them, her not liking them choosing her food, or her clothes, etc. They purposefully take it all away, and do so, in the most devastating manner possible. They all just leave without a word, and have Edward take her into the woods where she gets lost and ends up with hypothermia. She is trapped in the woods for hours, something like six or so if I remember right, and then when she finally is found, and she recovers, she discovers that Edward, stole all of her pictures, mementos, anything that could possibly be used as a keepsake or remembrance to help her gently transition out of this horrible dynamic. They all intentionally use her worst fears against her, in order to completely break her, so that later, as you will see, they can mold her into exactly what they want. Any time she even comes close to crossing into, I have a backbone territory, she is subtilty reminded of the time they left her. Its easy for us as adults to look at this and go, hey this is horrible behavior, and not a good relationship. However, at 16/17 with Bella's already fragile emotional insecurities, it completely makes sense that she has these reactions. It is actually quite deep if you analyze it, the danger lies in the fact that this is book pushed onto kids, who idolize this relationship. Before Edward and Bella it was Romeo and Juliet, teens everywhere wanted an idealistic love like that, which always just baffled me. Whenever someone said this, my reply was always something to the effect of, okay so you want to be sold to the highest bidder, start a war, and then commit suicide, leaving your family utterly devastated, gotcha. At 14, 15, 16, & 17 we just don't have the understanding on why these relationships are unhealthy and/or the story is showing us what not to do. (Not that is what Myers was trying to accomplish but that is what she ended up doing.)

I don't remember which year I read Romeo and Juliet in high school, but I do remember my English teacher (who remains to this day, the most badass woman I've ever met) being very upfront with us about how the idea of romance in that play should not be taken as the ideal, and while reading I understood what she meant. Romeo and Juliet literally met at Juliet's 13th birthday party, 17-year-old Romeo had just been complaining to his best friend about how the girl he likes would rather join a nunnery than sleep with him SECONDS before laying eyes on Juliet, and then HE goes out of his way to pursue her. A young girl who does not have the experience or maturity to understand anything other than this cute older boy thinks that she's pretty and giving her attention, and Romeo knows that. I cannot fathom how this is STILL considered peak romance.

@Phoenix_of_a_Down 3 жыл бұрын
@@LillianaNorthman It's understandable with teens, but it's also still considered peak romance in media, as well. Articles comparing the newest cinematic hot couple to a "modern day Romeo and Juliet," constant movie and play adaptations (seriously, I did theater all through high school, majored in it at college, and I feel so damn lucky that we had a Harry Potter DADA curse on our hs directors, if only because none of them ever knew enough/cared enough about theater to attempt any Shakespeare, and in college I stuck to the costume shop, so I never had to suffer through it). It's still more mainstream than it should be, with larger audiences than just young teens. I think the main issue is that Juliet is always aged up so that the whole thing seems less toxic (understandable, but even without the age gap, as you already listed, there are plenty more reasons for it's toxicity that too many people simply ignore).

Let's add one thing to Romeo and Juliet, ROMEO WAS "IN LOVE" WITH ANOTHER GIRL WHO REJECTED HIM, then he met Juliet and "fell in love" practically took advantage of a 13-year-old girl to put aside the relationship that according to Shakespeare in his initial dialogues lasted more than 3 or 4 years, he used Juliet, he killed Juliet's cousin not only for telling her that as he was from the enemy family she did not want him next to her but that his cousin literally challenges Romeo because she was very young ... also, everything happens in just 3 weeks, THEY MET IN JUST 3 WEEKS

"He will try to break her heart so she could get over him faster and he thinks it's an act of mercy." I can relate there. We were about 5 months before our wedding when I got seriously ill. I went from doctor to doctor, from specialist to specialist. They would do all kinds of horrible, painful tests to me, always ending with "You're absolutely healthy. It's in your head, go see a therapist." No matter how hard I tried to explain that everything in my life was roses before the pain and symptoms. That things started to fall apart because of the pain, not the other way around. They always just saw a hysterical, crying, young woman. Especially old male doctors. It was mostly their inaction that made me fall into a deep depression and I had suicidal thoughts for about 2 months. I talked with my fiancé, I suggested to break up, since there was nothing that hinted at the option of things getting better health wise. I love him so much, I wanted him to be happy, to have a full life. We'd been talking about having children right after our wedding, but in that state it was literally impossible for me to get pregnant. I knew he was always very adamant about wanting kids and in that very moment that wasn't a future I could give him. But that would be the easy part, no, he loves me deeply as well, so he called a bull crap on that and refused to split, refused to postpone the wedding, he wouldn't make a step back because "I said I want to marry you and marriage is for life, during all the good and bad." Try to argue that... It was clear he's so madly in love with me, he wouldn't see the reason. In my eyes I had to be the responsible one and take an action for us both. I thought about leaving, but it's a small town and he wouldn't be able to let go. That wouldn't be just a torture if anything. So, I had to remove myself from rhe equation completely. Leave him no choice than to move on. I started to figure out the logistics of the suicide, all I needed to push me enough was another heavy week with extra pain than usual. Thankfully, it never came. I got better (probably thanks to warmer weather). Our relationship got kinda back on track and I had enough time to get much needed strength to go on another round of visiting multiple doctors (I was ok-ish for 4 months, before it slowly started to go bad again). This time, I was lucky to get finally correctly diagnosed (endometriosis) and I could hold on to a road map of treatments. It took me about 2 years to ask myself the right question I should've asked myself in the first place. If he is so madly in love with me, that he willingly wants to ruin his life with staying with me, how can I be sure to correctly predict his action once I'm gone for good? Because what if he won't move on? What if he blames himself for that? I cannot have that possibility on my conscience. That's even more scary. The problem with my experience with the doctors is, I resent psychologists/therapist now. I always wasn't keen on someone emotionally helping you for the exchange of money (that's a thing in a country with free health care). If I went to therapist I would probably never got diagnosed. I would surrender for the idea that it's just in my head untill I would loose some of my organs to the illness. It's sad because I love psychology, I love breaking people, their behavior and action apart to see the connection and motives (which is probably a big helping factor with me being able to pick up so quickly and each time the familiar situation would hurt less, or would be dealt with way quicker). I just can't help myself to trust anyone picking in my head for money.

@alhena11 I don't think that it's overly sensitive, mainly because it isn't very funny (as you said), so where is the harm in cutting it out? And also that this channel is discussing mental issues, so there will probably be a higher number of survivors than on the average channel which in turn means that it would probably be nice to have a kind of safe space in the comment section. Just because people might be triggered by jokes like that does not mean that they haven't gone through or aren't going through therapy. They will probably be confronted enough with their triggers in their daily lives, I don't think it would be necessary to expand that experience to this comment section

honestly twilight is an accurate representation for how HS relationships kinda felt ya know? i mean of course not for everyone, but i think anyone can identify with having known someone or had themselves a toxic relationship that we knew was bad for us/them, but for some reason was the center of our worlds. i can personally say i've been Bella, i made the person i was into at the time the center of my world, and when he left it, i left, too. at the time i thought this newfound first "romance" i had was going to be the last one i engaged in, i wanted him or nothing. i was deeply sick. anytime i watch twilight i resonate with her & her feelings & i think about how much better it is now that i'm gone! this movie showed me my own relationship through another perspective. so glad i'm gone

You leave the person dwelling on what the heck happened rather than allowing them to get started on going through the stages of grief and eventually get over it.
