Ok...wow. Not a plane I will buy, but HH broke completely new ground with this one. An EDF that really seems to fly like a trainer is a first. Before all the linear thinkers chime in: no it doesn't have retracts. No, it's not fast by EDF standards. But every would-be pilot who just has to have a jet suddenly has an actual viable option that might keep him or her in the hobby rather than send them home after one disastrous flight. This one will drive the purists out of their minds - I love it.

I ended up getting this as my 1st plane. I flew it beautifully on the maden flight. Even went into expert mode and achieved a loop! Unfortunately, as I was landing, I lost lift due to the wind dying unexpectedly and I snapped the front landing gear off. Was able to order the brand new assembly for only $10 from horizon! Thanks for recommending this plane. I absolutely love it and the "free" rc simulator is amazing. I've never flown before. If anyone is on the fence, just do it. You won't regret it!!

@ericrolland9092
@ericrolland9092 2 жыл бұрын
@@Freddy007 oh man! How much I have progressed in 6 months!! The reason I crashed was because on a jet, the wing area is not as high, therefore you have to come in at a higher speed and let it just kind of touch down, where on the apprentice and other over wing, high wing area aircraft, you can really flair it to make a soft landing. That is unfortunate that you lost your wheel. I hope you were able to get it fixed and back in the air! Cheers to many more successful flights, friend!

@@ericrolland9092 thanks man, I just panicked on my maiden as I have never flown a RC airplane before and the wind was strong. Which plane would you recommend me to buy?
@ericrolland9092
@ericrolland9092 2 жыл бұрын
@@Freddy007 you can’t go wrong with the Habu. It is quick, agile, and beginner to intermediate friendly. I fly my Habu without safe on, and I find it to be a much more enjoyable experience than when I used safe. On wicked windy days, I use safe to help me land, you just can’t beat the stabilization it offers🤷‍♂️. The BAE Hawk is pretty sweet, very quick and has no landing gear to mess up, and is pretty fun to fly and requires less space. Pretty much anything with SAFE tech you will be able to fly, it is a matter of what your budget is and what kinds of aircraft you are into. I started with a jet, and now fly the Bigfoot from arrows more than the jet, and I fly my F4U more than anything else, so it all really depends on where your passion is. Seems like I may have imposed more questions to consider than I answered, but good luck and keep that positive attitude.👍

If you want to get some longer flight times and better speed the 5000mAh 4S fits. They are used in the E-Flite EC-1500. You shave just a little of the bottom of the cockpit and it fits perfect. Pretty big bump in performance and flight time.

Few points to note for others: (1) Make sure the wing hard-points in the body for the wing screws is properly glued into place - mine were but other folks found this was a problem (missing glue - QC issue) and glued them back themselves. (2) You will need to trim the front wheel control horn back a bit to keep it from contacting the plastic housing that holds the servo or it will bind/catch and not work right. HH should use a shorter control horn or just trim it back at the factory. (3) The SMART battery will come without the auto discharge setting turned on - I always set mine to 48Hours (personal preference) to help keep the battery happy. I used the XBC1000 to do this but the new SMART chargers can also do this. (4) Other who fly this plane on grass field have noted grass debris getting sucked into the fan intake and causing real problems - check it often and keep it cleaned out if dirty. Happy flying! FWIW: Since it comes with the simulator, it would be a real good idea for new pilots to install it and practice a bit on the simulator with this plane BEFORE heading to the field for the first flight on this plane! This is my third plane in my stable (only one crash yet, minor fixes) and that is my plan. My planes: AeroScout S 1.1M RTF (relearned to fly on it), Conscendo Evolution 1.5M BNF and now the Habu STS RTF. I also have the DX6e radio.

Gotta say.....probably WON'T be spending any more money @ Horizon Hobby, untill they get their act together. I USED to be a big fan. Not so much now. Their customer service, and technical support, has gone right out the window, since this pandemic thing. And I don't want to hear anything about the virus impeding normal service time. I had a rep @ Horizon tell me they have been enjoying a 6 month long buying bump, that has rivaled Christmas. And, on top of that, I've been watching them raise prices, to boot. How's that for a big thank you to all their established customer base? Now, I'm a big fan of this channel. You guys do alot for the hobby. And....well...Horizon takes care of you guys. They do make some nice stuff....although the quality of the parts has declined. But, it either works well, or, it doesn't, pretty much right from the start. If it's going to fail, it usually fails quickly. So...yes...most of your reviews are going to be 5 star where horizon is concerned. I just have to say though...I'm super miffed after having to spend 2 whole days getting through to tech support. Wonder why they can't hire more people to answer phones since this big buy-a-palooza they've cashed in on?

This is the 1st RC jet I have seen that ticks almost all the boxes. Hobby grade, tick. I fly off grass & see too many retracts fail, so no retracts is a big tick. The oversized wheels are another tick. Low speed capability, tick. No flaps/keep it simple, tick. Long flight time, tick. I might buy a Jet! I’m wondering why no BNF, I will look at PNP. Do I need a specific reciever to bind with my dx6i to get the basic telemetry? Thanks. 👍

Hi Nate, I'm new to this channel and RC flying. I want to buy the Habu and learn how to fly it. I have a few questions: What is the difference between RTF (ready to fly) and PNP (???plug n play???)?
@roguekwads_fpv7368
@roguekwads_fpv7368 4 жыл бұрын
Im pretty sure RTF will include the plane, battery, charger and transmitter (radio). And I guess an flight simulator that you can use your included radio (RC controller). And PNP is pretty much just the plane I think. So if you already had a radio and batteries then you'd get PNP. RTF is everything in the box in order to fly the minute you get it and charge battery.
@shanroderasmus6532
@shanroderasmus6532 4 жыл бұрын
If the plane is RTF, it means that everything needed to fly the plane comes included in the same box. If its PNP you will need your own transmitter and reciever, most of the time a battery too. If you have a bit of extra money i would advise you to buy your own transmitter as it could be used for your future aircraft, if the RTF variant doesnt have a good transmitter. Hope this helps, welcome to the hobby:)

@@roguekwads_fpv7368 You may be mixing PNP and ARF (almost ready to fly), ARF planes only come with the fuselage and wings, you would need your own servos, motor, esc etc.

I’m not really excited about this product. This is being marketed to a beginner flyer and I know that as a beginner I would have crashed this immediately. Its speed is too much and it’s a low wing aircraft. A trainer jet for someone who has not flown before is setting them up for failure. I understand this has full SAFE but the the transition between intermediate and experienced seems like it would be really drastic.
@TheRcSaylors

Always happy to hear any and all feedback of course, but I think if you had the controller in your hands you would retract your comment. I can whole hardly tell you that I truly believe anyone could fly this. Did you watch all of our video? It didnt seem like you did because we demonstrate this has a barometer built in to it, which doesnt allow a person to nose it in at all. Really an amazing set up. Let's also not forget it comes with a free flight simulator. So there should never be a reason to advance outside your knowledge before practicing on the sim. That is a HUGE game changer and factor you may not be considering. This plane is a game changer. A lot of times, people dont like change in the hobby because it's not the way they learned to fly. If this helps get more people into the hobby, and it will, let's not be so fast to write it off. Happy Flying!

TheRcSaylors Thanks for your reply. I will try to be more open to change. It has taken me four years to prepare for my purchase and maiden of the Eflite Viper on Saturday. I’ve been watching your Viper videos and they have been helpful. I just assembled the Viper last night and to wake up to a trainer “Jet” that someone can get into with no “blood, sweat, and tears”.... well, maybe there was a little bit of jealousy there...I hope people will succeed in learning to fly with this product.

TSM, I think you have a good point. Certainly it looks like one of the most accessible EDFs for a beginner, and a best bet for someone who insists on starting with one. However, the relatively high speed (for a trainer) means everything happens faster and further, so it’s just that much easier for the pilot’s mental processes to lag behind the airplane. Trouble brews far more readily when the pilot is reacting to what the airplane just did rather than anticipating and leading the airplane. The simulator can help ... a lot ... if it is used properly. But when I asked my cynical self whether someone who lacks the patience and discipline to start with a sleepy trainer model will have the patience and discipline to use the simulator as a training device instead of a flying GTA amusement game, “probably neither” was the reply. That said, I think it makes a great second (advanced) trainer, bridging the gap between a traditional trainer and the EDF world that is normally occupied by a sport model. Kudos to Horizon Hobby for continuing to lower the bar to success! 😁👍

You wanted to know my thoughts, so here goes. 1st and foremost this looks like an awesome plane. 2nd Nate did you even install RealFlite9? It has more than 200 aircraft included not just a few. It is supposed to give you the option to download additional models but I defy you to find the link on the website(s) to do that. Also if you register on the forums and ask that question all you will hear is crickets, I know I asked that question 2 months ago. Don't get me wrong. I own RF9 and I love it but they don't deliver on their promises. The video file instructions are old and outdated they show and reference the Futaba controller not the Spektrum Interlink that came with my RF9. The 2 controllers are not the same. All that said I still love to watch your reviews. You do a very nice job of that.

100% yes! The Citation and this are two VERY different EDFs. Although youd save some money on the Citation, it's so much more fragile compared to this. If you had both sitting in front of you side by side, youd have fun with the Citation, but you wouldnt be able to wipe the smile off your face with the Habu! You are correct about RealFlight; it is Windows 7/8/10 only. Fairly pedestrian system requirements, so even a decent budget computer ought to handle it nicely. @sc1212able Linux running a Windows virtual machine? RealFlight says it is Windows only. Would have to be a rather powerful Chromebook as far as those go, if you’re going to try RealFlight in some kind of Windows virtual machine on top of Linux. That’s a level of complexity waaaaaay above my pay grade. I’d stick to a native Windows machine myself; less hassle, more (sim) flying. 🤓
