I think people who complain that your best colour recommendations are limiting forget that by definition, "best" means the MOST favourable/desirable/etc. So of course, there aren't going to be a dozen "best colours". But just because something isn't your best colour, doesn't exclude you from wearing it. I think you've explained it very well in here, and in your previous videos. (:

You r doing way better job than most people I've seen... Sometimes I feel like they r making things way more difficult than it needs to be just so they come off as smart people that understood something that most can't... For me personally everything kinda fell into place once I had realized that it's a line or spectrum from ultra violets to infra reds not a circle at all... also human eyes only have receptors for red blue and green... so the whole colour theory that claims red blue and yellow are primary colours is actually wrong...

Can’t argue with science....those color charts don’t lie 😄 I got a question: how much does artificial lighting change our skin type? I (cool/bright) feel, that I can get away with much more in the evening...probably, because artificial light adds so much yellow to the skin? Or takes away the blue, rather. Same in summer. On a sunny day, I don’t feel nearly as bad in yellow or coral or other typical summer colors as on a cloudy day or generally in winter. And it’s not, because I tan, I‘m an avid sunscreen user. I mean, I don’t buy clothes in these colors anymore, but I still have some, I intend to ‚wear off‘ before I replace them...

@merriamstyle5 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is an important topic to cover when we're thinking about color analysis. It's hard to say exactly what's happening to you, but I have two explanations. The first is that if you're light enough, you are always cool and radiant, and as you tan, your pigment can actually be warm and if you gain enough of it, you become warm, and look great in coral (I have a video on this about the Lightest Skin Tones). The second explanation is that as we gain more pigment, we can simply pull off more colors because there's more pigment in general for the eye to pick up on. So as you tan, you can just pull off more colors.

Merriam Style Well it helps having a video to reference your point as well. I think traditional color analysis has confused a lot of us. I did have another question though. How does this work for reds? Since red is considered neutral, can there be a warm red/pink and cool red/pink?
@merriamstyle5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what I was thinking too! And yes, there are reds and greens that can both be warm and cool (like, actually considered to be cool colors in my system, not the 'cool yellow' stuff). So a warm red would be a tomato red for example, and a cool red would be ....not sure if it has a name, a cool red (you could google image it?). If you dilute warm red, you could get a bit of a peachy color depending on how warm the red is, this is a 'warm pink' in a way, and peach is warm. And then of course you can get a cool pink if you dilute a cool red.
@cozybrandi5 жыл бұрын

Yes, no yellows look good on me, ever, because I am cool and radiant. I think your colour system is great, and it really explains why I pull of some brighter colours well and don’t look good in beiges and browns. It’s also great that red is neutral. I thought of red as a warm colour and was wary of dying my hair red. But now I put a beetroot (and lemon) in my henna to make sure that the colour leans toward burgundy instead of orange, and it looks great!

In painting people do make a difference between cool and warm yellows, because if you try to mix a green with warm blue and warm yellow the result will be muddy due to both of those colors bringing it closer to red. So I would say that yes, cool yellow exists but you have to remember that the coolest yellow is always warmer than the warmest blue. I feel like in art the difference is more important as you build the picture up and you can try to make different effects by playing with cool and warm tones as well as different color schemes. How ever in styling and fashion you already have your skin tone set up and usually your goal is to make yourself look lively and healthy. I feel like many people who have studied color theory in artists point of view and then transfer to fashion don't notice that the goals have changed and therefore make it overly complicated
@merriamstyle5 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more! There's a big issue in the color analysis community, using color theory as a way to build on color analysis. There are lots of issues that this gives rise to...like the one I discuss in my video, and also choosing red as warm (in color analysis, it should be neutral, I have a video on this), but red is warm in color theory.....in most color theory, magenta is also considered warm, but in color analysis it's undoubtedly cool! And there are also obvious problems about context. There's a lot that artists know or are assumed to already know before they call something a 'cool yellow'. For example, that all yellows will still be warmer than all blues, like you said, just like the coolest day in the sahara desert will still be warmer than the warmest day in antarctica. About painting, when you say warm yellow, do you mean an orangey-yellow or simply the purest yellow? I noticed it's different with different paints. For example with watercolor I have better luck getting bright colors when mixing, but with acrylic let's say, they can get a bit more muddy, especially in the instance that you're describing, trying to make a clear green from turquoise and yellow.....I can see that holding up ok with watercolor, but not so much with acrylic. But still, would be better out of some pure blues and yellows in both cases!
@caller1455 жыл бұрын
@@merriamstyle usually in painting instead of trying to find the purest of colors I get something as close to the purest color but still on the "both sides" to me purest yellow is "neutral" yellow as the hue has no tendency towards either green or red. Color is quite complicated but you should always keep the big picture in mind. An artist needs to focus on different things in color than a stylist or an engineer building computer screens. There's so much to learn but that doesn't mean that you can forget the big picture, as that counts the most Edit: I love your channel btw!

Yes exactly! I feel like sometimes, and perhaps in part as a response to people saying their palettes are more limiting, more and more colors are added. When really, I'd personally rather be told 'don't wear yellow', than be given a color palette with yellow (on one of my worst colors) right along side placid blue (one of my best colors). What would the point of paying for a color consult even be in that case if I just end up with basically all the colors ever in the world again?

Btw I also think a lot of people assume someone glows more in warm colours- but that’s because the cool colours are neutralising for cool skin tones- what they’re actually seeing is the ruddy or sallow quality of the skin being exacerbated and they think it’s “warmth”. Actually, I study color theory. Your assertion, I believe, that color theory has become unnecessarily complicated and elaborate, is both bold and correct. The expansion of personal analysis to include 12 to 16 palettes becomes full of confusing, overlapping colors. I'm one of those individuals who seem to be hopelessly put in so many "seasons" by consultants. Therefore, I completely understand the attempt to find a palette for us with the expansion of seasonal categories. I believe you touch on a clue regarding light "red head skin". Personally, I look only bad to okay in both blue and yellow undertones. However, add a hint of purple to any color, and it's perfect! IDK what that means?? Maybe it's red? Red and blue make purple??? Lol
@merriamstyle5 жыл бұрын
Very cool and thank you for sharing! I'm not sure right now if it's the pinker undertones that you're talking about, or if it could be that you're a delicate undertone. Delicate undertones are closer to neutral (either less cool or less warm than their radiant counterparts). So perhaps that blue has too much 'blue' in it....too cool, and this is why purple looks better?
@edennis32025 жыл бұрын
I think I know what you mean. I have a light redhead's complexion, too. I have a slightly warm undertone; I like how I look in pale blues like sea glass and aqua, stronger into turquoise, and light to medium violets, and periwinkle. My only yellow is a light butter.
@superconfidentyou1935 жыл бұрын
So does it follow that a warm undertone will never look good in blue?
@meghanspeed24805 жыл бұрын
Chella Reese a better way to say it would be that blue will never be a “best color” for a cool undertone. Also, worth noting that she has mentioned a few times that warm undertones tend to not look as bad in their “worst colors” and in my experience, especially warm and delicate undertones can be very very close to “neutral” and therefore really not look terrible in blues etc.
@merriamstyle5 жыл бұрын
Yes and 'not exactly'. It follows that warmer undertones won't have their absolute best color be blue. So basically yes. But oftentimes, warmer undertones can much better handle cool colors than cooler undertones can handle warm colors. On top of that, some warm and delicate ladies are often mistyped (or mistype themselves) because they can go all their lives thinking that blue is their best color, and that they're therefore cool, because they haven't tried warm colors that are muted enough. Terracotta and, warm olive green are a good test of warm and delicate. But blue will also look pretty good (not best though)....magenta will look pretty bad.

Hahaha people can't argue against the stark-naked obviousness of the simplicity of colour analysis, so their only attack is "your thinking of colour is so simplistic!" 🤣 🤦♀️ As if thats an argument. Einstein said, If you can't explain something simply then you don't understand it well enough. Overly complex answers that leave people confused are a sign of either the communicator not actually knowing what they are talking about, or that the thing they are communicating is actually incorrect (the latter also necessitating the former!). Bruno Barnhart also says it very well: "We humans prefer a manageable complexity to an unmanageable simplicity." I got a red-flag with 12 seasons CA right away: overly complex, not intuitive, and filled with consistently arising contradictions and conflicts.

Exactly. People talking about "cool yellow" and "warm blue" are just confused. They probably think that warm means red. But it does make sense that if a cool toned person is going to pull off yellow, it would likely be a yellow that has a little bit of white or green added to it. But it would probably depend on other factors. As far as "warm purple", I have no idea which direction on the color wheel you would even go for that. Because neither one is going to have any yellow in it. If you are mixing paint and add yellow to violet, you will get some kind of a grayish brown.

Of all the colors I tried on, yellow might be the one I look best in, also in red, black, white, antique pink, olive/military green, and blue, not in order, what can I classify myself as? Hmmmmm....well I have a few thoughts. First, I wonder if you're looking at your skin itself, and how glowing and even toned it looks, or at some other features in combination? For example, does black look good on you because you have dark hair and darker features? If that's not the case, and you find your skin looks alright in all those colors but best in yellow, then you are warm and radiant. Yellow is one of the absolute hardest colors to pull off....reserved only for the most warm and radiant ladies!! Warm and radiant undertones can also pull off pretty much anything else, so they may just go about their lives not even caring about color analysis because there's no need.

I think most people want a free pass, like, "ok I'm a winter, but I loooove yellow......" so they make up a cool yellow so they can use that color. But we forget color is just one part of the whole image.

I really enjoyed your thorough explanation! When you are color typing someone, after you've found their undertone and whether they are bright or muted, do you also take into consideration whether they are flattered more by light or dark colors?

For me, I’m cool and delicate but yellow is one of my favorite colors so I like to figure out sneaky ways to wear yellow while having a cool color near my face. But like if I’m going to buy an expensive dress for an event I’m not going to get a bright yellow dress and spend the whole night weirded out by how off my skin looks 😅

Hi Merriam I am a huge fan of your channel, I think it adds an insightful and refreshing point of view to colour analysis. The first thing that came to my mind after seeing how yellow is not the best colour for cool toned ladies is that her hair colour is yellow. Since hair is next to the face, should we be more cautious about what hair colour we choose? Should we pick our hair colour within our best colours if we want to look our best? Or hair colour does not create any kind of imbalance? If so, would that mean that cool colour should stay away from blondish shades? I have heard both options when it comes to hair colour, that you should pick the same undertone as your skin and, that you should pick the opposite in order to balance your undertone (which I don't know if makes sense at all) Congratulations on your channel and hard work!

The 'cool yellow' idea probably also comes from a confusion between 'fresh' and 'cool', with people thinking something is 'cool' if it looks 'fresh', as in 'very light and bright'.

I think you are right - but at least the best colour analysis systems have removed yellow from the face frame palettes of the cool seasons - but I'd like to see the yellows taken out of the drape palettes too

I agree with you a lot, I definitely wouldn't create a system and put yellow as one of the best colors for a cool person. However, as a "Bright Winter"/"Cool & Radiant" person myself, I recently started incorporating bright, cooler yellows into my wardrobe and find it not so bad and a welcome addition. Yellow may not be the most harmonious, but I don't think it is THAT distracting to where you can't look at the person's face easily. The color that I would definitely say 'no' to is ORANGE. Once you start getting near orange in the spectrum, that's the "danger zone" for cool & radiants. You are still pretty safe with the "cool yellow" zone; I don't think the woman in the video looks bad at all with the yellow (although of course the cooler the color is the better, you are right with that.) I also love your tips about wearing cooler colors close to the face - that certainly helps a lot with incorporating warmer colors in the wardrobe! One of my favorite outfits is a bright yellow dress with a bright blue statement necklace. :) I'm also of a deeper skin tone, so I have more pigment in my skin and can probably look better in yellows than those who are very pale: would definitely appreciate a video on that! Much love to you and your channel, love it!

I was reading about the color theory and there are two approaches, in one yellow is the warmest and in one - orange. Both options have these or that scientific explanation. I would say personally i lean towards orange as the warmest, with its complimentary blue as the coolest. This way warm types are orange types, and both pink/olive skin, described usually as blue undertone are the cooler variants - moving away from orange in opposite directions. Still, in a way there is as many approaches as there is stylists. Merriam's videos are probably one of the best (if not) done on the topic on youtube.
@merriamstyle5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing Lala.....sure, I think my video was a bit dramatic! It really depends on the person. For example, contrast levels help, and also, higher pigment levels help a LOT like what you said. Someone who has more pigment just won't look as bad in their worst colors as someone who has less pigment for the eye to pick up on and match with the colors they're wearing. That's how I think of it anyway!

I usually agree with your analysis but here I think she looks great in yellow and softer And youthful and ruddy in purple her cheeks look like capillaries broke in the purple Bc purple and red is a hard match - she looks lovely in the yellow especially with her blonde hair - if yellow is bad for her why is she blonde? Her pink cheeks need to be down played - pink and yellow is a better match than pink and purple - that purple was harsh - mint green is nicer than lime green but .....I like her better in chiffon yellow than mint green - yellow flatters everyone Bc the sun is yellow and everyone looks great in sunlight!!!! That’s where changing tonality of the yellow can alter how it is perceived against skin but yellow is a primary color and therefore can be adjusted to anyone

If I were to paint a picture of a wintry sky, I might paint the sun with a color similar to "chiffon yellow" to communicate,-along with the rest of the scenery-that the weather is cool. I'm by no means an artist, but I wonder if this is where the confusion originates. People are very different from paper, I mean to say. When comparing the lemon yellow to the mint green, not only do her eyes seem to sparkle, but her face seems closer when draped with the latter than with the former. I wonder if that appearing closer is because the color is harmonious with her own and, therefore, her face is more "in focus"?

@@SweetTeaElle They appear blue to me. Actually, they look more blue against the golden yellow than against the chiffon yellow, and bluer still against the mint green than against the lemon yellow. You wouldn't happen to have grey or grey-blue eyes, would you?

I get it now. Yellow, blue an purple are definitely 'tricky' colours. It is agreed upon that green and red have warmer/cooler variants, which is true, but blue, purple and yellow so said having warmer and cooler variants but orange not for some reason has always been something I found to be weird and confusing. One theory I saw said that, to make orange cool to the point a cool perosn can wear it, it isn't orange anymore so that's why cool people can't wear oranges. But a warm blue can still look blue yet be warm enough for warm people...Not. I think a lot of confusion comes from redheads typically being typed as warm, because of their hair not their skin, and redheads look GORGEOUS in teal and turquoize. Not because it are warm blues and they're warm, but because they are cool and it are cool colours.

I think yellow doesn't look so horrible on her, she can definitely pull it off. I actually don't like green on her, it makes her look a lot more red and gives her hair a green tinge.

I have already asked a million questions lol, but here’s another! Have you ever seen a case where, for example a cool and muted lady, is better off sticking to muted colors (warm or cool) than cool colors (bright or muted? My best guess is I am cool and delicate, so I should be able to somewhat pull off cool and radiant colors, right? But I actually have an easier time wearing warm and delicate colors. Any bright colors seem to overwhelm me. Cool and delicate still seems to work best, but I seem to gravitate towards muted colors. Which is also funny since I’m high contrast and I “should” look better in bright colors!
@rexysmith40295 жыл бұрын
it seems like her exemple of Kim Kardashian and Nicole Kidman. Kim was much better in muted, even though she seems high contrast, Nicole looked awesome in Bright colors Like Black and bright Blue even though she as low contrast but she is super Radiant. Maybe the warm muted looks slightly better than Cool bright if your level of cool is closer to the "neutral", the Brights would be more far from your skin tone and the brightest just overpower your delicate skin tone , I feel like she talked about this in one of her early videos but not sure wich one and maybe Im making this up🤔 😂

So the trick of incorporating some better colors like black give me some hope that I won't look sickly with my neon yellows. :)

I was always wondering what is wrong with yellow and even mustard colors in bright winter palettes and why they don’t look good on me... the same story with some warm greens that were added to the palettes too. And I was thinking maybe it is because I’m not naturally a bright winter, I dye my hair, so that’s why not all the colors from the palette look good on me 😂 but actually now I get it. But I also understand why cool yellow is such a thing for people. I believe that many people adore that color and wanna wear it, so if they go to the stylist that says that yellow is not good for them they will be very disappointed ☹️

Yes! I am a cool bright undertone. I could never find a yellow that looked great on me. I used to say my best "yellow" was chartreuse (which is arguably green). Even so it wasn't as good as Mint or periwinkle on me. What's the point of dressing in our colour palette, if not to find our absolute best colours? Since discovery your channel I've been able to do much more online shopping and been able to be more focused and less overwhelmed when shopping in person.
