Former World and AMA Champion Grant Langston talks on the difference between the generation of riders like himself, Chad Reed and Ben Townley compared to the sports top young amateur rider like Haiden Deegan.
//
Grant Langston is a South African World and AMA Motocross Champion, was the voice of the AMA Outdoors, along side Jason Weigant, for almost 8 seasons and owns one of the premiere motorcycle dealerships in the United States. He also happens to be one of the most fun dudes in the industry and I am so stoked I was able to chat at length with the man we call GL!

Been watching him since he was 3’ tall. He’s had it in his blood since 50’s. He didn’t get the name danger boy for being a spoon fed privileged child. He worked for it. Luck for a dad, sure. But definitely doesn’t win Loretta Lynn championships from luck. Being able to ride with Craig and Tomac are so good for him. Can’t wait to see him progress💪

@@Degenerate124 absolutely.. Ever since he came out of his mums minge and jump on a bike he was already 50 steps ahead of every kid due to the connections his old man has developed and the money backing him.. What other family would be able to pump over 7 figures into their child’s amateur racing career? Props to the young man for being dedicated though! 100% agree I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Brian 3 different times and he is such a humble Dad. I don’t really think people realize what Brian did to get where he is today the man is a legend and pioneer of motor cross/freestyle. People that want Deegan to fail because of his luck are just jealous haters that probably have a crappy life of their own. Deegan does have some huge advantages, but he also has far more pressure on him because he's in the spotlight. And it will be so easy for people to discredit anything he has done on a motorcycle if he doesn't win everything because he was "given" every possible advantage.

You think James Stewart’s parents had massive amounts of cash and a nice motor home to race? Nope. I fondly remember taking my 5-year old to a Loretta Lynn NE Area Qualifier in Virginia back in 1998 and seeing Bubba, Malcolm and Sonya eating breakfast at McDonalds...driving a beat up minivan. They pitted right beside us in our little Ford Ranger. No frills. No big $$$. Just doing whatever it took to get the boys to an important race far away from central Florida. Big James had to work that weekend and couldn’t make the trip.

It was easy for anybody before the 1986 production rule, (that tripled the cost of a bike in 5 years), and the 4-sttoke that now insured a kid is not getting into this sport unless their parents are making a pretty healthy 6 figures. And if the parents of that good income did not ride, (like ours did not), the kid may only become a spectator complaining about a block pass,---because they do not ride. Bikes are just too expensive, and that is the fault of the 1986 production rule and the 4-sttoke forced on the industry by EPA/government. Pretty much the same type of thing for car prices today. Government force damages our industries and our opportunity in them,---every time. We need to demand our free enterprise back. That is not just a matter of opinion. More like a matter of life and death.

Nobody at the pro level nowadays ever had it really hard, look at the motorhome convention at any amateur event. A competitive supermini or 250f costs way more than any 14-16 yr. old can afford by himself. All of them had help from their parents(or maybe some sponsors), its just how much did they want to sacrifice (or waste). 2-3 mortgages, maxed out credit cards, or just burning through a fat bank account. Not hating, its just the way it is.

I remember showing up to the track as a kid in a ranger with an older bike and being embarrassed when everyone else had nice trailers and brand new 85s and when my bikes blew up we were done for awhile till we saved money to buy a top and bottom end it wasn’t just pull the motor out of the trailer. Shit I’m 26 and now just bought my first brand new dirtbike last year, I’m now setting up everything I wanted back then. Got the nice truck, the trailer and the fresh bikes and hope to give that to my kids when I have them. Money definitely paves the way in this sport.

Haiden was gonna make it either way. Whether he came from a rich family or poor family. The road may have been alot harder. But that kid has it in his blood. He's a gnarly rider. I actually think it may he alittle tougher in haidens path. Being wealthy and in the spot light. He could have easily lost focus on work ethic. Or the pressure was too much to handle at such a young age. He's handled everything with maturity and class. Even if he didn't have the best bike or the best team w his talent guaranteed he would still be winning races. The kid just has it.

Back in the day guys who raced didn’t have Supercross tracks to practice on, they couldn’t just go to Hangtown and ride there during the week. I grew up with Mike Keidrowski in Canyon Country. It was a small dirt town back in the 80’s. We lived on a dirt road with 6 acres. A mile up the road was just dirt and hills for miles and miles. Mike Keidrowski and some others made a natural track out in the hills. We didn’t have dozers and bobcats to build tracks. We used the terrain that was available. Keidrowski spent days and hours out there riding that track. We would go out there on our dirt bikes and ride with him! He would blow by us but it was still fun to be out there riding. He would stop and we’d all stand around and talk while his dad would top off his tank and tell him you got another tank of gas to go thru before we are leaving. Larry Brooks, Willie Surratt, Mouse McCoy, Mercedes Gonzalez used to come out and ride. Ask Jim “Bones” Bacon about Vasquez canyon riding back in the 80’s. He will tell you it was amazing. He was out there all the time too. It paid off for Keidrowski! 125, 250, and 500cc championships. He did well in Supercross too, he was the king of Daytona. None of those guys were rich! We were all middle class families. Our parents worked to support us. Deegan isn’t special at all! He’s been riding since he was just a little guy, he puts in the same amount of work as say Tomac. They have great facilities to train on. Money has nothing to do with it, yeah his parents have money but he is still on the same bike any kid can buy. He might have better suspension but still any kid can go out and buy good suspension! The motors are still the same for competition! You can do whatever you want to a motor except the piston and cylinder size. Deegan gets out there everyday and trains! That’s what makes you better, time on the bike! Not how fat your wallet or bank account is! He has his eye on the prize and that’s SX and MX championships! Money can’t buy those! You gotta work your ass off and earn those! I love listening to GL cause he won’t sugar coat anything! I’m a Deegan fan, been watching him since his 50 days! He’s progressed well and I hope to see him on top someday.

"Money has nothing to do with it, yeah his parents have money but he is still on the same bike any kid can buy." I think I am just a bit more old school than you, but we would have great conversations. But I have to disagree with your sentence above. I bought my bikes as a kid, with no parental support starting in 76 and I was 12, making $1.00/hr part time at my dad's store that he had from 74-80, (rural Michigan). I bought a brand new bike every 2 years until he sold the store, I graduated HS and bused tables at Big Boy restaurant for a big pay raise to min wage, $3.45/hr. I bought new bikes like that, and started racing in 84. I lived at home still, but working that job, (a cook later for $4.00/hr) while paying my own way through part time college, buying a new mini truck, all my gear and tools,--I did it all. That was before the 1986 production rule that tripled the cost of a 250MX bike in 5 years. Tell me,--what "kid" can buy their own new Dirt bike since the early 90's? All the trails and tracks we made are all grown in now. Today,---no kid is getting into this sport on his/her own, and the sport formed my life. That won't happen for any kid ever again, if the parents won't fork up 10 grand just for a bike. Not many parents who did not ride/race, will do that. It was the 1986 production rule, and the 4-strokes forced on the industry that destroyed 90% of the market share it once had. No kid----is every going to buy a new/capable dirt bike again,---and man,--that is a lot of kids opportunity lost, (and not in just racing---I became a manufacturing expert/engineer and small business owner because of this sport's influence on me.). Bottom line: We should never have let the FIM and the EPA tell us what to make and buy. That crap is very very expensive, and destroys opportunity for others. Check out how empty the MXGP starting gates are lately. We have a communistic attack on our free enterprise. What do we expect, prosperity and affordability? Not going to happen in our lives. One thing I know. Us old poor guys---were tougher and had more talent on the 2-strokes. :) Are you related to Kyle Lewis? Doug in Michigan

He is gracious modest humble and not a prick like Friese in his personality or how he rides. Has he had to make a questonable block pass on anyone this season? he never got to race anyone really that’s on his level of ridding… but he will soon and I’m sure he will hang with them but I don’t think he will win a title his first year tbh. he getting a lil to comfortable but he will get humble soon. tbh he could win on really any tbh. He is that good… but there’s been multi amateur multi champs turn pro and didn’t even get a 250 title or still trying stay injury free

It’s his personal fame that make others jealous period but that goes with fame on social media you’re loved to your face but hated online … I follow tons of riders like twitch or Alex and many others most didn’t come from money and still made it and yeah Brian deegan is his father and his money and connections put him in good positions but that doesn’t mean he will make it he still has to win period and very young kids with real talent are found daily and financially backed with sponsorship and go foward with other riders so basically people just hate dangerboy because he already makes more money then professional riders

Langston has a point but haiden doesn't have it easy at all if you look at that families money a majority of it was haiden cause Brian wasn't doing freestyle in the last 10 years an those truck races don't make the kind of money they have so it was only coming from one place an that's from KTM an all the other sponsors in his amatuer career. I mean now he can screw up an be fine cause he's a social media guru an so is his family plus his sister races Nascar but alot of that was on haidens shoulders at 7 years old tell now he definitely doesn't haven't easy at all.. always having to make videos while training it's not easy at that age I bet he wishes he could turn KZbin off an just race but he can't

In sport it's not about luck or privilege you can be give the best bike and be a terrible rider its about individual talent
@skagbonez
@skagbonez 2 жыл бұрын
More often than not the best rider can’t afford a bike and the talent isn’t even realised. Privilege places a massive part. Two equally talented kids, one has a private track to train on every day and the best bike money can buy v the guy who rides twice a week on public tracks on his dads budget. Whose winning in that situation?

@@skagbonez You right, my son had to work all week after school to get to go race on the weekends, ran at least 5 nat. and Lorretta's from 50's on up with a lot of top 5's and 10's and a coup[e of titles. Money and inferior bikes hurt his chances to succeed. With the best opportunity I know for a fact he would have made it.

It’s not called privilege, it’s called luck. Luck is when something random happens that influences you. And because it’s random it’s completely out of your control. Privilege is when you have the ability to purposely stack the deck in your favour. Haiden got given some good luck, completely out of his control, and then made good with it. This modern idea of privilege is a scam.

@@GYPSYTALES In some cases, you're probably right. In this case, not so much. Ryan Dungy's path to becoming a motocross and supercross champion was much more a case of luck, I think. Degan's son was certainly lucky to be born into that family. But from that point forward, he's been highly privileged. Especially in the world of motocross. The kid can definitely ride a dirt bike. However, motocross has been filled with guys who could ride dirt bikes. And, the list of "The Next Guy" that never actually became that guy, is long. Like a lot of them, this kid has the talent. And with that comes potential. Unfortunately, like a lot of those kids, he's getting a lot of pressure heaped onto him. By just about everyone. He may be able to handle it. Only time will tell, though. For him personally, I'd like to see the hype dialed back a bit. Maybe let some of his talent and development come together a little more naturally. Just my opinion...

No ,they are not making it up ,there is unfortunately hate out there for haiden ,if look at his KZbin videos and read the comments you can see it ,also from other up and coming riders ,one in particular said on this same channel ( Gypsy tails) that the 250 haiden is now Rider is too fast for him and he can't handle it ,I personally think the kid is very good , level headed and will definitely do well in the sport you are born with talent ,you can't take out a loan and buy it .

I don't think famous/professional parents inherently make their kids faster or better. I do think famous/professional parents can give their kids better exposure to the sport either through competing while their kid is around or if they're retired they can be way more involved. Most regular non pro parents can't give their kids the same level of exposure to the sport from the same young age.
