I think that’s actually the pointer and middle finger. The “English taunt” as it’s called was created by English longbow men during the hundred years war between England and France. The French declared that they would take the two fingers used for firing the bows from the archers, so the Archers started holding the pointer and middle finger up together to taunt the French. Nowadays we hold them up like a peace sign crossed with the middle finger. It wasn’t really a widespread thing across the whole of Europe and as far as I know it’s not directly linked to the modern middle finger but these things are hard to research so who knows.
