So funny thing: A cat purring doesn't necessarily mean they're enjoying themselves. They can purr for a variety of reasons, including comforting themselves and others. So if your cats purr when you get hurt, they're probably trying to comfort you, not revelling in your torment.

yeah, the misconception that purr ALWAYS = happy causes lots of problems. It is a COMFORTING sound, used to say “I am comfortable/happy,” but also “I am fighting through the pain,” “Please feel better soon…”, and “Don’t worry, I’m here to protect you.”

Red talks a bit about the 'ascending dragon' you mentioned in her Trope Talks on Sidekicks and Minions. This video was similar in many respects to her Trope Talk on Kaiju, in that they are also creatures with no fixed description and some of them (the daikaiju) can be freaking enormous.

I think the meaning of dragon being "one who stares" can kind of make sense depending on the context. On one hand it can mean something we stare that in either fear or awe, on the other hand can mean something that stares at us but when we try to stare back we blink, indicating a being we fear or get intimidated by.

the word 'drakon' also probably referred to snakes because there are a number of snakes indigenous to the Greek peninsula and Anatolia. Snakes don't have eyelids, so they can be thought of as 'staring' eternally.

Yu-Gi-Oh had a lot of weird esoteric dragons: two out of three Egyptian God Cards are dragons (Slifer/Osiris being a giant snakey THING with a mouth on its forehead and Ra being a giant mechanical bird with phoenix motifs), Different Dimension Dragon which is a plesiosaur thing, Parrot Dragon, a bat-winged parrot, Blue-Eyes White Dragon who is the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian woman who died for her lover, etc.

Nah, the trope of storm god versus serpent is possibly because of the fact that ancient people associated rain with snakes. It's possible that ancient people connected snakes with rain due to the fact that snakes seem to become active around the time that the rainy season returns. Also, a lot of cultures connect snakes with water.

29:30 Yamato No Orochi was an 8 headed serpent that died while drunk, because while sober even a God couldn't take it out safely. Grasscutter was found in his tail. Red covered that story; look into more of her mythology videos to get the full story. Edit: Oh, wait, you DID watch that one. Remember the one with "Susan"? 31:50 I remember in the early days of Magic the Gathering, when a player let a Dragon Whelp through unopposed, thinking it could only add +3 to it's attack. Cue reaction when 15 red mana was tapped for the attack, and everyone watching realized the Whelp didn't die until after doing the damage. From that day forth, we called them Hand Grenades, and prioritized blocking the suckers.

One dragon I remember very fondly is Frau Mahlzahn (Ms. Molar) from the Jim Knopf (Jim Button) franchise. After her defeat at the hands of Jim Knopf, Lukas the locomotive operator, and their locomotive "Emma", she thanks them for defeating her without killing her and transforms into a Golden Dragon of Wisdom. She essentially becomes an oracle.

Considering the "draconic curse" story archetype, I think Elden Ring has a pretty good version of that. In the game, when you kill a dragon, you get the dragon's heart. Afterwards, you can exchange the hearts at the Chapel of Dragon Communion to get special dragon incantations, such as fire breath, frost breath, etc. From a lore perspective, what we find out via item descriptions (thanks Fromsoft) is that those who indulge in too much Dragon Communion eventually become draconic themselves - gameplay wise, when you exchange enough hearts, you get sick dragon eyes - but lore wise, you find they turn into magma wyrms - malformed, flightless dragons that spit magma. This reflects the draconic curse - both the greed and transformation. Those who become greedy for power and slay too many dragons become dragons themself.

Yamato no Orochi was the drunk. Susanoo was wandering after Amaterasu kicked him out of heaven (this is after she spent time traumatized in a cave and needed a Goddess to strip tease to get her out) and found a farmer whose daughters were being eaten by a eight-headed eight-tail snake. There was only the rice paddy princess (Kushinada) left and Susanoo fell hard when he saw her. The solution - Susanoo hid her as a comb then got the snake drunk on eight barrels of sake. Then while the snake-dragon was drunk, he sliced off the heads. When he was cutting up the tail, he found a sword Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi in the tail flesh. He gave it to Amaterasu as a "forgive me" gift and she gave it to her descendant Jimmu. It was so sharp it could extinguish a burning field by cutting off the burning tips of the grass - earning it's other name Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi ("Grass-Cutting Sword"). It's one the three regalia of Japan, along with the mirror used with the stripping to get Amaterasu out of her cave.

My personal take on storm god VS dragon formula being so common is that well, ofc, it's a very old idea and that possibly sound of the storm was interpreted as the dragon's roar. Best part is that makes for incredible scene setting, it's one thing to use the generic t-rex roaring thing we just kinda decided applies to dragons and instead booting up thunder sounds to show how terrifying and magical the damned lizard is

'Welcome to the Dragon's Drink' the sign outside states boldly... you walk in and are greeted by the usual tavern bustle. The room seems so otherwise normal you double-take when you realize there is a full grown dragon behind the bar... half-way through a hole in the wall. If you step outside, you'll just see the outside of said tavern, no dragon rear in sight... either way, one thought crosses your mind: gods, sorcerers are weird.

Speaking of categories like Dragon: Fae, Fairy, Fay and names like that could also be considered as category of where Fairies, Gnomes and Goblins used to be put during Medieval times. As long it was smaller, magical being that seemed like otherworldly and wasn't fond of Iron, those beings could be put into that category.

25:00 Actually yes. The first Godzilla movie came out in 1954. Professor Tolkien was 62 at the time. Because he died in 1970, he could also have seen the Gozilla movie "all monsters attack" that came into the theatres in 1969. This means that tolkien might have seen up to 10 different Godzilla movies in his lifetime. (If he was interested in watching them is in my eyes a whole other thing entirely) Also, english isn't my first language. So please excuse any errors in spelling and grammar.

Most dragon in Chinese myth are good & wise but there are exceptions, for example: In Investiture of the Gods, the 3rd dragon prince tried to kidnap a girl(and do unsavoring things to her)-> got killed by the hero Nezha(though cooking the dragon prince's tendon is a bit much) then the 4 Dragon Kings demanded Nezha to off himself or they will drown his home city. And he did(by removing his flesh from his bone piece by piece). A year later he is revived, after going through a lot of trouble & drama(for example he his clay body got broken by his dad so he switched to a lotus body)

JRR Tolkien died in 1973, the first Godzilla movie was released in Japan in 1954 and in modified form in the west in 1956. By the time he dies there would have been 13 or 14 Godzilla movies, so it seems likely he'd be aware of Godzilla as a thing. Though it's doubtful he ever saw any of them since he had...views... on things like TV and movies. Suposedly he never owned a TV set.

So the yellow emperor is specifically part of the five elements and the auspicious beasts that rule them along with a cardinal direction. The white tiger rules metal, the vermilion bird ruled fire, the azure dragon ruled wood and the black tortoise ruled water. At the center of the cardinal directions was the golden dragon who ruled earth. Most Chinese cultivation novels will mention the first four and very rarely will mention the yellow emperor/ gold dragon simple because he is so much more powerful

There is a dragon in Zoroastrianism by the name Aži Dahāka from an ancient scripture named the Avesta, but later in 1000 A.D. (or C.E.) a Persian poet by the name Ferdowsi wrote another version of Dahāka as Zahhak the Serpent King. Changing them from a supernatural monster into an evil figure with snakes for shoulders, and even Red did a video about him. Dahāka (and by lesser extent Zahhak) has been featured in other modern mediums like in the novelization for God of War II, the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Starcraft II (with a character by name Dehaka), Homestuck, Highschool DxD, Azdaha from Genshin Impact, _That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime,_ and yes... even *Fate/Grand Order.*

It's something the fans started using for the Princesses long before the writers adopted the term. The term comes from Piers Anthony's Xanth series. 21:40 You know, I was preaty confused for a while why the Fell beasts were not considered dragons. But that is when I really sow there original description in the book. " It was a winged creature: if bird, then greater than all other birds, and it was naked, and neither quill nor feather did it bear, and its vast pinions were as webs of hide between horned fingers; and it stank. A creature of an older world maybe it was, whose kind, lingering beneath forgotten mountains cold beneath the Moon outstayed their day, and in hideous eyrie bread this last untimely brood, apt for evil. And the dark took it, and nursed it with fell meats, until it grew beyond the measure of all other things that fly…" So this has some interesting inplications, especially when combined with Tolkeins own admition that he based them on Pterodactils. Rather then a smaller bread of dragons, the original fell beasts were more like primordial animals, remnents of an " older world" that were on the verge of extinction, until Sauron discovered them, and over god knows how many years made there kind way bigger, scarier and more melevelent then the already big scary dino birds they originaly were. My personal theory right now was that they might have been a part of an initial draft of animal creation from back in the oldest period of Arda, one that eather didnt go well, or that Melkore managed to somehow screw up while he was still a major newsence to the Valar

Speaking of dnd making one creature into many, the names goblin, orc, and kobold, were all different languages term for the same creature. Also, trolls and ogres and giants are basically the same. And Dwarves were a version of elves. And they used to have their underground realm lit up until Freya slept with them all to convince them to give her the shining stone that lit up their realm, to make herself a pretty necklace. Afterwards they were in the dark, and became the dark elves. Tolkien took some liberties, and DnD (which based itself on tolkien) took those liberties further. E erywhere from sea serpents to winged snakes, to hydras, dragon turtles, apocalyptic beasts and lung dragons fit. One could very reasonably put Godzilla in the dragon category

A thing about the differentiation of monsters because of d&d is that its a lot more common that you think. As an example the original Monster Manual for the 5th edition had a buch of creatures with petrification powers, but what did they do? The Medusa is a type of monster not a single being, the gorgon (wich is what the Medusa is) became a metal bull with a petrification breath, the cockatrice is just an evil looking chicken (no snake part) and the basilisk (wich is another chicken/snake chimera with petrification powers) is just a generic monster with petrification eyes like the medusa. So yeah, d&d fucked up a lot of visuals for mythological monsters.

Anne McCaffrey also introduced small dragons in another Pern series Harpers Hall Trilogy. Dragons the size of housecats and telepathically bonded to humans. But they weren't called dragons in story, but 'fire lizards'. Later if you continue reading more Pern novels, you find out that the little dragons are the rootstock of the big ones who were genetically manipulated for larger size because humans wanted to ride them.

"I'm not looking up whether there is a spider dragon" ... I mean, not a Spider, but isn't Vortigern in FGO capable of spawning an endless army of deadly insects? The very little I've read of it mentioned insects. Also, iirc, ORT is literally just... Super Alien Spider That Ends The World, or something.😂

Anne McCaffery's books are really good. You should try to find reprints or even just the OGs. The base story of the series is post apocalyptic like as humans had to leave the earth for whatever reason and learn how to live on a new planet. Again, sounds like sci-fi right? but sooooo many fantasy tropes and features. Real fun.

funny that they actually mentioned a Huītzilōpōchtli, I've heard the name before and they weren't associated with the sun, they were a god of death, blood, and war. I heard about them from an audio book called Jake's magical market and in that they were a giant blood red serpentine God of death and violence. Also Airier, Dragons and Hydras have always been at least distantly related because hydras have usually been described as multi headed monstrosity with draconic heads at the end of each of their many necks, sometimes it's serpentine heads, sometimes the heads are those of an eel, another thing that will almost always link hydras and dragons is their possession of thick armored scales or at the very least thick armor like hide. Another connection between dragons and hydras is their extremely potent and thick blood, in the case of true dragons, their blood is a powerful additive to any potion, that turns even a simple healing draft into an elixir of life, whilst hydras went all in on the toxicity trait, turning their blood into a highly potent and toxic, corrosive poison.

You know, in the anime series Slayers, there are actually multiple VERY different types of dragons. the gods are draconic beings who oppose Mazoku (basically demons). There are also more conventional d&d style dragons who, while not gods themselves, serve the gods, have human level intelligence or higher, and can shapeshift from dragon forms to human forms. Finally there are dragons who are basically animals that, while huge, destructive, and sometimes fire breathing, can be kept as pets or even eaten (there's an entire episode where the plot is the cast trying to catch a dragon so they can eat it). So yeah, Slayers hits a lot of bases in terms of dragons. If you haven't watched it, give it a try.

3:29 There's a lot of overlap between "giant/monster snake" and "dragon". 4:24 No. It basically became a generic term for "large and monstrous creature", particularly in English and especially if that creature is at all snake-like.

30:37 that's literally just Glint, the legendary brass barkeeper dragon from D&D. You can find him in the Game Master's Book of Legendary Dragons. 34:00 I'm sorry to tell you dude, but there is such a thing as a spider dragon in D&D, it's just as horrible of an abomination as you would expect and I beg you not to look it up. It will haunt your nightmares.

24:53 Tolkien died in 1973, so he theoretically _could_ have seen: Godzilla (1954) Godzilla Raids Again (1955) King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963) Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965) Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966) Son of Godzilla (1967) Destroy All Monsters (1968) All Monsters Attack (1969) Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) Godilla vs. Gigan (1972) Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) It's pretty unlikely though, since the international release dates are different

I'm working on an animist fantasy setting. In that, Dragons are literally spirits of Power. Just the idea of Power. If you want a medieval dragon, take Pride and add sky, stone, and fire. If you want an asian Lung, take Rulership or Wisdom and put it in the sky or sea. If you want a Nordic wyrm, give it greed, hate, and poison. What matters, is it is a semi-corporeal spirit that represents some aspect of fundamental Power.

11:53 That is NOT what Detail Diatribe is. That sort of content is primarily handled in the god videos, the myth videos that broadly cover a source, or Blue’s “History Makers” videos (when the subject is a specific storyteller). Detail Diatribe goes into detail on how a specific work interacts with a specific space of tropes and techniques. They might talk about sources of inspiration or a bit about the history of the trope, but they rarely go deep into the historical development of myths or broader concepts like dragons in the way you’re describing.

Yup, detail diatribes are looking into a singular topic in detail not covering the entire development/history of something the way individual god videos are. Maybe he needs to finally watch a detail diatribe to be disabused of the notion?
