Did anyone notice that Loretta (Sissy) made a chocolate pie in this movie, and it's won by her future husband? Unlike "The Help" (well, we all know what was in that pie!), salt was put in it instead of sugar. Apparently Loretta couldn't read and write, although she did learn to later on.

My Daddy was born up a holler outside of Pikeville, Ky, (he even met Loretta a few times before she got married. I got glimpses of the life in the opening scenes of the movie, and as a little girl I went to a family hog kill up the holler in the early 70’s) and was a coal miner, and later crop duster. He was a special breed of man and I will always be a “daddy’s girl” and miss him until the day I die. What a blessing to be a Coal Miner’s Daughter!

This scene is magic for so many reasons. A complete unknown Loretta Lynn takes the stage, and the noise of the crowd is drowning the music...but gradually, people quiet down and take notice, and realize that Loretta Lynn is something special. By the end, everyone is quietly captivated and in awe. This is really when her charisma shines. Thank you for posting this.

Loretta then announced to Johnny that Miss Sissy Spacek would be playing her in the movie. When Sissy was offered the part, she was intimidated and to try to get out of it said, "Ok. But if I take it, then when the script calls for the character to sing, I'll sing it." Loretta's people said, "We'll get back to you on that." When Loretta announced on that talk show that Sissy Spacek was going to portray her, the next day she called and said. "So Ms. Lynn agrees that I will sing her songs?" And they said, "Yep. You're the one she wants so we'll honor your condition in the contract." Sissy had a huge amount of respect for Loretta and was afraid she wouldn't give a good enough performance. Loretta, though, knew she would.

The difference between an actor (actress) and a star is that an actor/actress pretends to be someone else. A star *becomes* someone else. And that's exactly what Sissy Spacek did in this movie when the camera was rolling. She *became* Loretta. And you could tell she was having a blast singing that song.

Omg so wrong... The JOB of an actor is to become someone else; how good one is at that is a different story. By your "definition", stars are NOT actors anymore... (If a star becomes someone else, he/she cannot *pretend* to be that person hence a star cannot do the job of an actor, which is, by your faulty definition "pretending to be someone else") A "star" is somebody who's famous for what he does in an artistic field. NOW GO AND READ A BOOK :D *SO* cringy...

47Mortuus I think you misunderstand the term "become" in this context. By 'become' I mean their performance is so convincing that suspension of disbelief comes naturally. And movie and film stars are indeed actors/actresses. They've just become so good at their craft that it's hard to tell the difference between them and those they portray (while the camera is rolling).

I'm from the next county over from where Loretta was born in Ky. Can't believe I never saw this movie until I was like 25! One of my absolute favs now. I even took my family to see her old home place! There is even a little country store below her house that her brother owns. It is the same one in the movie and the same one that has been there since Loretta was a kid! It has a bunch of her memorabilia in it and her fancy dresses she has wore!

I'm a fan of Loretta Lynn's, have been ever since I was 7, visiting my grandparents on summer break in 76. Ever night it was electric guitars, Schlitz and The Loretta show in the living room. I remember asking "What pill does she have? Grandpa, A Magic Pill boy. Comparing Sissy singing Loretta's songs in this movie I have to say if Sissy was actually trying to make it as a singer in the 50's and 60's I really believe she would have had several #1 records. Her vocals are perfect for those decades, A old soul country western singer.

Her singing the music in this movie is what made the movie what it was... and she does such a good job at it. If she didn't sing, the movie would not have been the same... it would have never gone as far as it did.
