While I believe consciousness is likely to end at brain death, the belief some have in an afterlife is often based on the idea that consciousness is intercepted by the brain, and not created by the brain. So, to some we are spirits having a human experience. Psychedelics, near death experiences, astral projection, and even really vivid dreams may create the appearance of consciousness outside one’s brain. The only real hope we have for an afterlife is the fact that we don’t know what consciousness really is, or where it comes from.
