And people were saying Joel was too soft compared to the games. Just let the show cook, it's not a game with shooting and killing as the main gameplay device. That kid begging for his mom was so chilling.

Early episodes had them pulling out rolls of tp and later episodes the streamers have come prepared with boxes of actual tissues. I'm loving your genuine love for the game/story and characters. Love the enthusiasm and insights into the show. Keep up the great work!

For once the YT algorithm did me right by recommending your channel. I found your channel with Episode 3. Yours is still my favorite reaction to that episode of all the ones I've seen. I loved Nick Offerman's comment on the episode: "Frank is the flower. Bill is the soil." I like how they did the scene with Joel teaching Ellie about the gun and apologizing. So many people playing the game felt like he was just being a jerk and didn't pick up on that he was bothered that she had to kill to save him. This was easier for the audience to take in.

Your reacts and discussions have this great balance of you both being very attached to the games (and very knowledgeable), but also being very open to adaptation and the potential to seeing how they've gone about trying to make this story flourish in a different medium in different ways. I'm seeing some parallels between Joel criticizing Tommy wanting to be a hero, and Sam painting himself and his brother as superheroes. Hope and innocence in a hopeless cruel world might be a central theme of these episodes. But that's just my theory.

If you think about it, it's kinda funny in a tragic way that the awful urban planning in the pre-outbreak US is partly responsible for the events in this episode. Here in Europe, highways usually go around major cities, so you could drive across the country on them without ever having to get close to an urban center. In the US they insisted on building them right through the middle of cities, which led to the demolition of countless (usually poor or minority) neighbourhoods, but also would make them a lot less safe in (post-)apocalyptic scenarios like this.

To be fair, I don't think it's that she's a woman as such. You could easily see Tess or Marlene (obvs) leading a militia, but Kathleen is very soft spoken & gentle (until she shoots someone). It does feel like the first casting 'miss' for me thus far, but we haven't seen much of her yet so I'll reserve judgement for now.
@Saphthings

@@davec3583 That's not the perspective that those commenters I'm speaking about pose. But also, we have to stop with the mentality that a woman is only "strong" if she exhibits traditionally hypermasculine traits. Half the "strong women" that some men can digest will be guns out, strong biceps, speaking "rough" and basically acting like what they think an "alpha male" acts like. It's why when we get a villain like Dolores Umbridge they are so captivating. Breaks the cliches.

idk how true this is (since i haven't had the time to listen to the new podcast episode yet), but i heard through the grapevine that they didn't tell pedro the last pun until they were shooting, so his laugh would be genuine. i stand behind this decision completely, at least a little bit because i have a big gay crush on pedro pascal n think his laugh is absolutely adorable. also: as a 19 yr old w a physical disability that essentially gives me Creaky Old Man Joints™ (in the simplest and most light-hearted way of explanation), i feel represented by joel's battle against staircases. they are pure evil and i hate them. everyone i climb stairs with simply has to accept the fact i'm gonna spend the next few minutes sitting on the floor and cursing the existence of stairs

Yes. Finally someone who gets that we automatically create empathy structures with the people we play with, while we need to sympathize before we can empathize with characters we observe. This is also why the changes in ep 3 were so important. Not only are they setting up a contrast for ep 7, but the audience need the hope B&F brings that there can actually be a good life in this world. This is probably also why they tone down Joel and Tess quite a bit. Not weapon smuggling but looking for a battery to get to Tommy. It is also why we needed the much expanded opening with Sarah. Playing as her established our empathy much quicker than the show ever could.

Here in Brazil fresh "cold" milk comes in bags, the Shelf UHT milk comes in bags or the SAME box style (tetra pak with screw top) that your iced tea is in. And the joke book is not just in the DLC. You can trigger her to read those jokes in the first game in certain sections if you meet certain criteria. I go back and fourth on if Ellie killed Riley in the game. On one hand, she told the story of her first kill being when she saved Joel BUT she was talking about a non-infected kill. IF, when she killed Riley she didn't see her as human but only as an infected person, the story still makes sense. It could also be that since she "went back and forth", the classification of Riley as no longer human may have been a self-defense stance for her sanity and allowed her to keep her "innocence" as well as her mental well-being. In the show I think they are going with Ellie still saw Riley as human even though Riley was attacking her. That she hasn't forgiven herself for it.

Also, the ignorant would assume all non-binary, like Bella is, would no longer feel welcome by the Christian Community and would no longer want to be/feel they are part of it. KCMO from the look of it. KCK isn’t really a skyline town.

What I'm wondering is why they'd risk going through Kansas City when they're clearly giving other big cities (Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, etc.) a wide berth.

Yeah, he was saying anything to get to his people. If Joel _had_ believed him they would have shown up and J&E would have been killed, then Brian may have had a chance at survival, although probably in a wheelchair.... But it's not Joel's first rodeo. Lol That scene was chilling!!

Im not that into the way they express the dialogue taken from the game, they try to say the Lines like Ashley and Troy, but it doesnt feel like it comes naturally. imo it makes it feel like fan fiction, idk maybe they should just let Bella and Pedro perform the Lines with their personality, there are different ways of being witty and stand off ish. Not to say the acting is bad it just feel like they read the Lines out, I Can definitely feel its better when they perform new dialogue, because its to some point written for the actors

@@tlou_explained Directions from directors, Ashley Johnson had a Big part in creating Ellie as a character. Pedro and Bella good actors and good for the roles, but not with those lines or the way they try express them. Thats probably my biggest complain, it Can go from really great to cringy in my opinion

I'm probably reaching, but do you think Joel waking up with his right ear up, facing Ellie, is foreshadowing? A sign that bad things happen to people in this world when they're willing to trust and open themselves to others? I've really enjoyed the pacing so far. This episode felt a little underwhelming after the self-contained emotional journey of Bill and Frank but after that time to breathe we were definitely ready to go back to the darker stuff.

These hunters led by Kathleen overthrew FEDRA in the Kansas City QZ. Before that happened there were people who ratted on people like Kathleens brother to FEDRA as being members of the opposition. Those rats included the doctor and the other people on the list that she asked him about. She believes that Henry was the one who ratted out her brother and if FEDRA put a gun to Sam's head Henry definitely would do it. So, her belief that he did is entirely reasonable. Like Joel with Ellie Henry puts his brother's life above anyone else's. Ellie's conversation with Joel on the stairs is the most important of this episode and will play a big part of who Ellie becomes by part 2 and how she can do the things she does. When she asks how he knew about the ambush and he says because he, Tess and Tommy did the same thing he tries to excuse or rationalize it by saying they were doing what they had to in order to survive. But that's not really true and instinctively, Ellie knows this, so she asks the pertinent question, did you kill innocent people and by innocent she means people like herself and Joel. People who aren't out to hurt someone, that aren't on one side or another. People who are just going about living their lives until they were ambushed, robbed and murdered by Joel, Tess and Tommy. Because self- defense and survival didn't play a role in Ellie and Joel's ambushers motivation just as it didn't in what Joel, Tess and Tommy did. It was because they could do it and they wanted what they could take from others by violence and force. When Tess told Ellie that she and Joel weren't good people because they were just out for themselves, she wasn't honest with her about how far they went to be just about themselves. This was some of the "shit we did" that Tess wanted Joel to "set right" by getting Ellie to Frank and Bill. But of course, some things can't ever be set right. They just are what they are, and you have to live with the consequences catching up to you one day. When Sarah saw Joel kill the neighbor, she was horrified even though he was protecting her. When Joel beat a man to death in a rage in front of Ellie she was transformed by the act. Not just because someone was protecting her but by the power that Joel displayed. The reason she is obsessed with having a gun isn't about the ability to defend herself, it's about power. The power to be on equal footing with others, to be offensive as well as defensive in a world that sees and treats her as powerless. After the ambush when Joel is about to die, she grabs her knife, her former symbol of some kind of power but puts it away and grabs the gun. Not because it's a better choice for the situation but because it's an opportunity to do what she's been fantasizing about, having power and using it. Joel is choking yet she slowly walks to them, raises the gun and finally fires. After she shows no concern for Joel who is still making choking sounds while he tries to recover. She isn't shocked by what she's done but she is hesitant about what to do next when Bryan isn't dead but begins to bargain and plead for his life. He tries to connect with her by telling her his name and asking hers. Before she can make her next decision Joel takes the gun and the decision-making power away from her. When he calls out for his mother and Joel stabs him, she doesn't react. She isn't in shock because she is able to understand their situation and responds just as she should. acting like the team they will become. No arguing or questioning Joel just doing what he says. Then we find out that this isn't the event that changes her life. That was in her past and affected her to the extent that she doesn't want to talk about it. But she does want Joel to know it exists, so he won't be hung up on what he thinks is a new traumatizing experience for her. That most likely involves Riley and is about so much more than just killing. When she found that trapped infected in the store basement, she cut it as an act of power over it. Then in anger she killed it reflecting her propensity to violence and cruelty that she shares with Joel. She is more like Joel than his daughter Sarah was. She no longer cares about the person it once was or that may even still be trapped inside a body it can't control. She wants revenge, for Riley, for Tess and for her own unhappy life. In episodes 3 and 4 we are seeing the beginning of the bond between Joel and Ellie. We are also seeing Neil Druckman's theme of how love, especially for and by a child can be a dangerous and destructive thing.
