FWIW, most of the classic tragedies, from Sophocles to Shakespeare, were written for audiences already familiar with the stories - and yet they were still meant to leave you an emotional wreck. (The idea being that bawling your eyes out at the play would also flush out whatever else you were keeping pent up, leading to a healthy emotional purge, or "catharsis".) As long as the writer can get you invested in the characters, no amount of foreknowledge makes it easier. So Neil & Craig are following in a grand tradition, and doing it amazingly well.

What made this more impactful is that there have been hardly any infected on screen for most of this episode, episode 3 and 4 and then they are just unleashed in this fantastic set piece at the end. If they were on screen all the time then you would quickly become desensitised to them. Really clever storytelling!
@Saphthings Жыл бұрын
There's something unsettling in realizing that Sam was just sitting there because he's deaf. An infected listens for their prey. Even if he ever went to go full on clicker he couldn't. Ellie broke her promise and fell asleep, so he was just sitting there. Waiting, screaming from the inside. As his brain was slowly eaten away. And until someone touched him, or came in his view, he would sit there forever. And when Ellie touched him, Sam saw his own body attack her. Instead of becoming the superhero he always wanted to be. He became a monster, crying for his brother to help. He didn't even hear the shot. Just his vision slowly fading to black. He spent all night trying not to fall asleep. Then suddenly his eyes were slowly closing, afraid of what would happen once he woke up, but he never did. Bill and Frank's story was sad, in a stoic kind of way, but just like Bill said at the end, it wasn't tragic. They'd lived a full life. Here Sam and Henry had hope, a chance, and a whole life ahead of them. Henry was so good that he protected Ellie before even realizing what he was doing. It was instinctual. That comes from deep inside. But a little like Kathleen said, this kind of goodness, makes it hard to live in such a tragic world.

Kathleen existed to draw a parallel between Sam and Ellie. "Was he worth... and this" she asked. She specified it was his fate to die, presumably because of his... "condition." Leukemia. Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish. The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save". Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end. I think the series showed that more clearly in this way than the game did. In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel. There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again.
@elheber Жыл бұрын
What a fantastic change in this adaptation. In the game she had no personal stakes. In the show, she has one of the most powerful ones: guilt. Until this point the mission had been given to her. Ellie said it herself.. She didn't ask for this. Now it's different. Before she had a purpose. Now she has purpose. She was happy to take the scenic route until now. Now she is in a hurry to make it West.

Everyone is like "wow she's going too far with this revenge plot" or just doesn't agree with anything she does and hates her for how she treats Sam and Henry. I love how the series is elaborating and expanding on the core themes of the game, including TLOU2's biggest theme: GUILT; - Ellie OBVIOUSLY feels it, represented beautifully at the end with her "I'm sorry" message - Henry talks of "doing a bad guy thing", feels horrible about Kathleen's brother, then can't even handle what happens with Sam ("what have I done")... 😭 - EVEN Kathleen feels some level of guilt, speaking of how her brother would be "horrified by what she's done". Of course, she's an excellent example of how UNCONTROLLED guilt and grief can be mis-handled.

That allows anyone to discover any good story at any time like new. Some stories are timeless. (You’re doing fine though! I felt like I had to clarify after seeing the intro for the latest video. I felt like Ellie doing the "my blood is medicine," and trying to heal Sam was actually a 50/50 thing. Like Ellie wants to believe she can, but she also doesn't believe she can. An inflection point. Kind of like a child goes through. And you pray you can keep your innocent, sweet life but everything around you is starting to force you to change your mind. And this was almost like her last moment thinking "if I can just save Sam, everything can be fine again," and once it fails you see she's completely different. And now she's like Joel. Cold, awake to the reality of this world. Endure and Survive means something completely new now.
