If I was doing this I'd drive in from out of state, walk to the bus depot, pay cash, bus in to NY, do it, bus out, then walk 5-10 blocks back where my car was parked and take back roads across several states to get back home without cameras picking me up. I know you can do this last part from experience, because I regularly take back roads across three states to get to the family's cabin on vacation. Using this model, your search area in just the first 6 hrs expanded from Maine to the mid-Atlantic and as far west as Ohio. Consider this, a man named Andrew Witty aka Sir Andrew Witty is the main character under investigation for insider trading. Witty is the CEO of United Healthcare Group which is the umbrella company of UHC. Two underlings are also under investigation, one of which was Brian Thompson. Witty was the one who gave the order for all employees to shut up and not talk to the press. How is it that the shooter had inside information about the exact location Brian would be that morning and WITHOUT security detail? Maybe Brian was about to make a deal to testify against Witty?
