I live in Belize. We have different sects of Mennonites. Some are very fundamental. They don't use electricity, no motorized vehicles, no rubber tires, etc. The girls and boys have separate doors to enter the school and sit on separate sides of a classroom. There's other groups between. And the last group you would think you were in a regular midwestern farm community. They dress in Western clothing, use electricity, vehicles, and modern farm equipment.

You mean they aren’t experiencing ‘your’ life. I lived in Chester County many years (just east of Lancaster County) - my neighbors were all Amish (not Mennonite) [which is different]. Their lives are spent experiencing ‘God’. They don’t believe in mirrors, or zippers, no music, no dancing, no education above 8th grade, no electricity - that’s all superficial stuff. One needs to be ‘humble’ to best serve God. They speak PA Dutch (‘Deutsch’ meaning German). It’s no different than hearing Mexicans yapping at each other in Spanish. Different language / different culture.

@@Traveler-rf8ye Immigration to the US started in the 17th century: the Swedes to DE, the Dutch to NY (who named Brooklyn, Harlem, Yonkers); British to Virginia (VA being named after Queen Elizabeth I known as the Virgin queen), etc. At the time the port most of immigrants ships arrived in was Philadelphia. Most folks from present day Germany came through there (naming part of it Germantown that played a large part in the Revolutionary War). So imagine walking around Philly - you would hear all kinds of accents. Naturally folks would ask each other where they were from. The Germans would say Deutschland (which consisted of small principalities) [‘Germany’ didn’t exist until, like, 1877 or so]. Or they would say ‘I’m Deutsch’ which the British would translate as ‘Dutch’. Most early immigrants moved here due to religious persecution in Europe so entire families would come over. If they didn’t have money to pay the passage / ship’s fee they would be indentured servants for 7 years to pay it off. So immigrants already here would sponsor friends and families from the Old Country. Naturally they lived in neighborhoods amongst their previous Countrymen (i.e. Germantown). Most were farmers who did not / could not have their own land in Europe so after their indenture ended they would move West. Most of the immigrants were Catholic or some type of Protestant (Lutheran, Methodist, etc.) and would assimilate to the culture and language (British) [but lost the hoity-toity accent]. The Mennonites and Amish, though, because of their religion and insular societies, kept their language. That’s how so many of them landed in Lancaster - only current-day Chester County stands between Philadelphia and Lancaster. PA Dutch is a derivative of what’s called ‘High’ German - it’s the old fashioned German language from old-time Germany. People who currently speak German have a very difficult (if not impossible) time understanding what the PA Dutch say - it’s its own language. It was passed down through the families until WWI (which was a bad time to identify as German) [same with the Japanese]. Besides, early immigrants WANTED to be American and fit in (instead of naming a kid Johan they would call it ‘John’). They were proud to become American and speak English to show gratitude to the US for giving them opportunity. My family arrived in Philadelphia in 1733 and 1738 - they spoke German (PA Dutch). Their children assimilated and spoke English in public (to fit in) and German at home. That went on until the 1930s. My grandmother didn’t teach my mom German so she and my Grandfather could talk about the kids without them understanding. Then you had WWI and WWII and German just died out at home...except for the insular Mennonite and Amish. That’s why they are bi-lingual today: English in public, PA Dutch in private. Their English though has an accent - we call it being ‘Dutchified’. So, short story longer than it had to be, that’s it in a nutshell.

Their small children all have chores; larger children have jobs (within the family farm or business). By the time they’re 14 / 15 years old it’s time to work full time and bring home a paycheck. All their money gets pooled together; no allowances. Any adult still living at home contributes 95-100% of their paycheck to their parents. So - no - to them structured education is a waste.

Ok some of you seem to think black amish isnt a thing. As a black person living near Lancaster, PA i can assure you they adopt children of other races. Not saying the show isn't fake but black amish is a thing. I have also seen asian. I am about 20 min outside of Lancaster. While i wouldnt call it common place i can also tell you that aspect is real.
