Okay I’m not sure if anyone else noticed this, but at the very end where the camera is focused entirely on Victor as he’s working up his courage to say the words, it gets really quiet and you can hear the deep breaths Victor is taking, and after he finally says “I’m gay” what do we hear? A large exhale, which I think was a subtle callback to what Simon’s mom said to Simon about how she felt he had been holding his breath for years and now he could finally exhale. That’s actually a really cool directorial choice to me.

He was smoldering at him the whole time, did that cover of “Call Me Maybe” expressly after finding out Victor liked it and was singing to him (on stage), that drawing he did of him at work??? He was clearly sending signals the whole time. The narrative also tells us to hate Derek for him not liking romance or heteronormative trappings of love, when Benji would have KNOWN THAT about him since he’s been dating him for a year. So it’s a problem NOW?!? Why have you been with him this whole time? Also Mia is a sweet angel and deserves to be happy. I really dislike how in a lot of gay/lesbian love stories (at least the ones I've seen and read) the closeted character has a straight character pining for them and they have to end up breaking up with them or hurting them. I feel like this is reinforcing the stereotype of 'you can't be friends with someone of the opposite sex without someone catching feelings' and it's really uncomfortable. I really hope they stop doing that and come up with some other kind of drama without making the lgbtq+ character lie and get into an unhappy relationship with a Heterosexual character.
@killanelle4 жыл бұрын
i personally like when the lgbtq+ character pines for someone they think is straight (they could be in an established hetero relationship or only express interest in the opposite gender). it's more realistic to my experience as a bi person, and i find it really interesting to watch the "straight" character realize their feelings for the lgbtq+ character. i agree, though, if there's going to be a break-up, i want it to be amicable. perhaps have the other person in the relationship lose their feelings for their partner, and they break up because of that? i'm tired of the whole "straight person is upset because their partner/crush turns out to be lgbtq+ and crushing on someone else" trope.

@EASJR19914 жыл бұрын
This is a controversial issue that doesn’t really have any real consensus. But I have talked about this issue in real life. And what other people have told me is that they wouldn’t except being told that they can’t be who they are or have to hide who they are just to make other people comfortable. Perhaps that’s what the riders may have been thinking about Benji‘s viewpoint. Benji didn’t want to be told that he hast to go back into the closet. I think in real life, lots of openly gay people in such a situation would not want to be towed or forced back into the closet, they would want to be told about the situation ahead of time and then give them the choice. Perhaps what Victor should have done is told benji about his grand parents and their views on homosexuality, and then gave him the choice of whether or not to show up openly gay or not.
@Carolina-wz2qo3 жыл бұрын
@@EASJR1991 This obviously isn't universal, but as an lgbt person with many lgbt friends, I've never met an lgbt person who would be bothered or offended by something like this. Especially as a kid, you're never fully out, and I feel like all of us understand this. You will always have to protect yourself in certain settings, and honestly I would be way more upset with a friend if they didn't tell me that I was in a potentially dangerous environment than if they did, because then they'd be putting me in a situation where I could be harassed or violated. And especially in this situation where Victor was worried because *he* wasn't out to his family yet, it's even more understandable because he was also trying to protect himself in a potentially dangerous situation -- especially with very traditional families it's not just a matter of disapproval, but possibly physical violence, financial cutoffs or abuse. If anyone told me "hey, my family is very homophobic and traditional so it would be better for you to not say you're bi" there would be no questions asked in my part not only because I don't want to put myself in a situation like that but also because I don't know anyone else's orientation or identity and I don't want to put them in danger, either. And even cishet people are sometimes in danger by associating with lgbt people. You have no way of knowing how your straight friend's family will react to knowing they're friends with you. I don't think it's a matter of being forced back in the closet because especially at that age pretty much no one is fully out of the closet, and it sucks but it's a reality that we all have to deal with.
@TB-up1jz3 жыл бұрын

I wish there was a show like this but for bisexuals since we are under represented especially male bisexuals and there are a lot of stereotypes. Also I saw this show when I was confused and it felt like it said bisexuals aren’t real. If they had a bi side character who wasn’t questioning then it could have lessened the reaction from bi people.

I would recommend skam (season 3). It's not a show with a bi character, but it does have a pan character. It's a norwegian show and the story has some similarities with love, victor. But it's more realistic I guess and the storytelling is amazing!

1. I was so annoyed with Pilar in the last episode. Her line about Victor staying "her same Victor" got me so mad. It's like everybody in the family expects Victor to always be their perfect and obedient son, and "fixer-upper". He's growing up and should be allowed room to make mistakes and change. 2. I wish Victor didn't cheat on Mia nor wanted to wait until after the dance to tell her he's gay. Also, is it just me or Benji and Victor don't look like they'd be a great couple. Based on the 1st season I feel like Benji should just be an old crush and a friend to Victor in the 2nd season, but they'll be dating so... *sighs* whatever

I’m going to be really honest, I thought the show was going to be more about sexual fluidity, being bisexual, or pansexual, and not him dating Mia then saying “No, I never loved her like that/in that way” in the end. It seemed as though they built him up to be a bisexual, or pansexual, character only for him to come out as gay in the end. It’s kind of cliche. Why not have a bisexual or pansexual character? I wanted something new. The only reason Victor seemed to have fallen in love with Benji with what seems like “love at first sight” was because of his looks and because he was gay, which didn’t seem organic or healthy to me. I didn’t like his character as much either, they just don’t seem endgame to me. I don’t know why, but the character Andrew kind of seemed meaningless to me. Maybe he’ll be bisexual? They kind of threw very small hints, and I may be really reaching. Perhaps we’ll see more in the next season. I really hope they cast more actual LGBTQ+ actors.
@ruledbyvenusss4 жыл бұрын
@Ami Oropeza absolutely, of course they do. but i also think it’s understandable why other people in the lgbt community who /aren’t/ gay men would get frustrated bc (mostly white) gay men have had just about the most representation in the community since the community has been more accepted by mainstream media. where’s our male bisexual romcom protagonists or trans lesbian protagonists? they exist, but few and far between. and most of them are just in dramas, not in fun quirky romcom style movie/shows. i just think the media needs to branch out just a little more so that /everyone/ gets to see themselves and feel seen by pop-culture.

There’s already a lot of “queer stories” about bisexuality and fluidity. In fact, most are about that. They just don’t make it on the nose. However, it’s a difficult complaint because a lot of people do just do what others expect of them in their youth. Also, fluidity and bisexuality are complicated topics. Someone may experience some fluidity or bisexuality and still ultimately few that they’re “gay” or “straight”. The series itself is pretty much very young people and is super basic in every way.

I can't believe I got so hyped up for gay tv show, especially in the Love, Simon universe and it ended up being mostly a straight love story. Every episode I found myself caring less and less about the characters and more about if their was going to be enough lgbt content to satisfy me. Maybe one sapphic relationship, even minor. Every single scene with Mia and Victor made me cringe and I thought the relationship would've ended in like the first few episodes. It kept going because Victor didn't have a good enough reason to break up with her, she was perfect and coupled with the fact that he didn't know his sexuality it made him even more confused. The fact that he was even messaging Simon in the first place pretty much confirmed the fact that he liked boys, especially being attracted to Benji before knowing he was gay, not wanting to kiss Mia. If he was gonna play that dumb to not realizing he wasn't attracted to Mia, then they should've made the signs less obvious so that the audience could understand his confusion more. Instead the only thing that I cared about throughout the whole show was when he was going to break up with Mia and stop torturing her.

This is Victor’s first time meeting another gay boy his age, it’s natural that he’d immediately gravitate to him as a love interest but that doesn’t mean it’s actually a good relationship. @ACourtofSlytherinBooks no, you're totally right! I really just meant it more in the fact that it probably won't be a very long-lasting relationship. I was mostly speaking from personal experience since my first crush on a girl was just bc she was hot and i thought she might've been gay, which made me feel safe and seen (she wasn't lol) but i know for a fact that if she was and we had dated, it wouldn't be a great relationship bc it was based just on attraction and curiosity rather than emotional connection which is how i view Benji and Victor's relationship. i still strongly believe the shouldn't have ended up together at the end of the 1st season but that doesn't mean they aren't a good match. I think they would just need to spend more time together and get to know each other more rather than jumping into a relationship. But yes, you are 100% right there was other attraction there, i just didn't think it was enough basis for a relationship, i probably could've expressed that better originally lmao. thanks for expressing that!

That being said, they could have made Victor bi and kept a lot of the same story beats they used. He could try to make it work with mia, bc it'd be socially easier, but still not be able to deal eith his feelings for Benji, which would result in the same kind of guilt and avoidance--even more so bc he'd convince himself he could just ignore his gay crushes and focus on his straight ones. Roderick Furlow same! you took the thoughts out of my head. the plots with Victor’s parents and all his friends’ plots and stories fleshed them out and made them real people and not just characters to pad Victor’s story. i didn’t love all the details or every side plot but i did enjoy getting to know all the characters and their backstories and trauma and the reasons why they are the way they are

I loved the episode where felix shows his mom's hoarding habit - it really made me feel seen as a person because my mother is also depressed and a hoarder and I have lived my entire life in that type of environment as well. They did it as well as they could with a subplot, but I really wish more characters had these types of back stories that expressed what they are struggling with at home, their need for escapism, etc. I literally cried because it made me feel so much all at once - it was surprising to me.

I think one main factor of why the show felt...safe? is that it was only moved to Hulu last minute and was written and filmed with the knowledge that it would be on Disney+ I feel like Disney probably didn't want anything too crazy in terms of LGBT+ stuff on their platform. Apparently, this was even too much for them though since it got moved to Hulu. Anyways, I have a feeling that they can do some more interesting stuff next season since now they know it will be on Hulu
@Duxaluxa3 жыл бұрын
@Gloriellee X that was the excuse, it was moved cause it was an LGBTQ central show. They literally also removed love Simon like a month after they announced this show was moving to Hulu. Also if it was for “language and mature content” then they should also remove there other half of their catalog F.E marvel, Fox content and even more... they removed the show for having LGBTQ central storylines and they didn’t want to make the bigots mad😒😒😒

also everyone talking about how “straight” the show is, the point of the show is literally Victor trying to figure himself out which is why he never said he was gay until the final episode. Love, Simon is all about Simon finding the GUY he likes which is why this show is so different from that cause Simon already knew he was gay but Victor didn’t. and are the side characters supposed to just not have any plot or storylines besides being friends/family of victor? then you guys would just complain that the side characters had no point. i thought it was a great show that showed a completely different dynamic than love, simon and i loved it. also, this was barely the first season. if it gets another season, i’m sure it’ll be more progressive since Victor has come out now.
@MS_258264 жыл бұрын
I agree!! I’m so glad that the “side” characters actually got plots and storylines and that they weren’t just an afterthought to Victor. There really wasn’t a lot of plot lines to follow at all.

Totally! The creators also have way more room to get more creative in the second season since they know this will be on Hulu and not Disney+
@maryp.90574 жыл бұрын
I agree with that, I don't mind that Victor's main plotline is "straight" b/c him figuring himself out and trying stuff out is a very common gay experience. However, I wish more of the side plots did have gay characters in them. Victor and Benji are the only two characters (besides Simon and his friends who are basically foil characters) who are gay and Benji gets a lot less characterization and screen time than all of the other characters. I feel like this show was very much marketed as a show for gay ppl, so it would've been nice to have more gay ppl and more storylines with gay ppl in the show.
@PrissyandAndy4 жыл бұрын
Mary P. well the show originally was supposed to be on disney+ and disney hasn’t been the best with LGBTQ+ representation but since it got moved to hulu and it was just announced that season 2 was approved then maybe there will actually be more representation but i still think they did well for the first season.

I'm seeing no comments about the bisexual baiting in here, so I'm here to rant about it. As a bisexual, we need more representation in media especially in bisexual men, I just haven't seen a lot of that. Throughout the majority of this show, they really made Victor seem like he was bisexual, they made us think that he really liked both Mia and Benji in a romantic way but, surprise turns out he's just gay. I'm not complaining about that, gay representation is something that is still needed to this day, but if you going to make a character gay make sure to outline his confusion and his coming out story in a way that doesn't lead on the viewer. I'm not saying that Victor couldn't have thought he was bi, he definitely did at first and that's okay! But it just gets on my nerves that the writers lead us, or me at least, on that much and only let us down in the last episode. I still like the show though, they got a lot of other things on point.
