Also, not sure if this was intentional but knowing Isayama it probably was; Reiner was literally holding a can of herring 2 episodes ago while talking to Ymir. A ‘red herring’ is a literary device when one big event distracts you from another, bigger event that’s going to happen. Ymir’s transformation distracted us from all the odd behavior of Reiner and Bertholdt and then they shocked the living daylights out of everyone. A literal representation of a red herring. God I love this show!!

@@ayla-40 That's a very cool idea, but I don't think Isayama meant that as "red herring" because that's not a thing in Japanese, and I never got the feeling that he's fluent in English. That was actually a double reveal though -- herring is a saltwater fish but there is no ocean between the walls, cans don't exist, and that foreign language is unknown because the people inside the wall don't know there are other people elsewhere. So this points at a more technologically advanced civilization of foreigners outside the walls, for one. And secondly, Reiner isn't surprised at any of that (only that Ymir also knows all this) -- ergo both Reiner and Ymir come from that civilization. That is when I became 100% sure that Reiner was a shifter titan; I'd been watching him like a hawk because by that time I was already very suspicious of him.

Reiner's one line "We were just kids" always hits me. He's 18, Bert and Annie are 17 and the wall was broken 5 years ago. They did that when there were 12-13 years old, you just have to wonder what exactly was going through their minds.

Also Bertholdts line in episode 4 makes more sense now. Reiner saved connies life and risked damaging his arm and also potentially dying for someone they consider against them. Bertholdt was mad at Reiner for putting the whole operation at risk and tried to remind reiner that he is a "warrior" and not a "soldier".

Favorite part about this episode is the fact that even the CAMERA is confused by Reiner. It cuts back to Hange, like nothing in the middle of Reiner saying "Five years ago we attacked the walls" like Reiner was going off script.

Yes, in Japanese, Berthold said to Reiner "what are you talking about?" instead of "Why are you telling him?" Obviously at that moment, Berthold wanted to, or tried to go back to the soldier's life if possible. It's a bit sorry for this translation b/c Bertholt' indecisive character was blurred.

If you look back on the scene with Reiner in the Female Titan's hand, you can see a quick moment where Reiner winks and turns his head as if he were trying to secretly tell the Female Titan something. At the time, most people think that he was just grimacing in pain, but if you check out the scene, you see it was actually a wink of secrets to be told.

This episode is the reason why I started watching reactions. Everything about this episode is a masterpiece!!! The revelation of Reiner, the explanation of Armin, the transformation of Reiner and Bertolt...EVERYTHING ❤

There were actually a lots of clues that Rainer and Berthold are connected to Annie, along with other details about them, but they are on the verge of understanding on first viewing of the show. (Some people really notice and predict the twist) During the battle for Trost they can almost always be seen standing together relatively calm (since they are Titans and not really afraid of regular Titans), as opposed to most sitting in a depressed state. Rainer even discusses the plan of action a bit with Annie, later he sits next to Annie and asks Connie what they know about the Titan (since it was Armin, Mikasa and Connie who brought him in, but no one knew it was Eren yet). After Armin's elevator plan (episode 1x8), when Annie kills the second Titan that Connie couldn't kill, Rainer says to Annie "that was close, I'm very glad you weren't hurt", this moment is mentioned in episode 2x4 by Connie telling Rainer thanks for saving him in the tower and that he wants to return the favor to Rainer and Annie. As Mikasa watches Titan Eren get eaten, she thinks aloud that he is the key to humanity's survival, Rainer agrees and offers to save the Titan, Jean objects because of the danger, but Annie says he could be a strong ally. Later, when Eren partially transforms to protect his friends from a cannon shot, the trio are the first to rush in to see what happened (they saw the lightning from the transformation). When Sonny and Bean were killed, the scouts say the assassins did it quickly and there were at least two (at least two among the military, we later learn that Annie brought Marco's ODM, but there was someone else). In the battle with Annie, Armin tells Jean and Rainer to wear a hood to hide their faces, but Rainer later takes it off himself when attacking her. In episode 1x23 Annie says she couldn't become a warrior, and in 2x4 Bertholtd says Rainer used to be a warrior (there will actually be more details and references about this later in the series). In 2x1, Mike's thoughts on the fact that there are probably no Titans among the 104th Cadet Corps (squad of Eren, Annie and the others). The thing is that at the time of the plan to capture Annie, Erwin ordered Mike and his officers to guard all the other cadets, as there could be Annie's allies among them, so they were unequipped later in the episodes. Mike, when he saw the titans, thought Colossal or Armored had breached the wall and there were no traitors among those they were guarding. There is also a moment where Rainer and Berthold were shocked and wondered why the wall is breached and the titans are coming to them (it's very funny to rewatch). Even in episode 2, the three of them can be seen among the refugees even before the training (5 years ago, Annie takes bread, and later Rainer and Berthold stand with a look of surprise on their faces).

In s1ep23 Annie says something along the lines of “failed as a warrior.” Reiner calls himself a ‘soldier’ and his identity is muddied because he became such a core part of the group fighting for humanity that he has trouble fighting for the whole reason he came here: to destroy humanity. 2 episodes ago, Reiner falls into the ‘soldier’ mode saving Connie, and Bertholdt has to subtly remind him that he’s a ‘warrior’ so he doesn’t forget the mission, which Bertholdt thought Reiner could be fucking up because he’s getting too attached. Bertholdt is definitely more behind the scenes, and yes Reiner shines in the limelight. But you have to wonder who’s worse, the one who deliberately stayed hidden so as to not get attached or found out, making his betrayal less hurtful for the others, or the one who knew he was here to destroy the walls and kill everyone inside, and intentionally make deep connections, being almost like the group’s role model, knowing FULL well the friendships would turn into enmity. He was sent on a mission to destroy the inhabitants of the walls and couldn’t help but make it hurt even more by making himself the good guy, or the hero, in any situation. A funny thing people say is Annie literally crystallized herself, creating her own prison, to hide information, while Reiner literally a few hours later: “So I’m the Armored Titan…” You have to wonder, why there? Why so sudden? Even Bertholdt was surprised. Remember they’re all around 15-17 yrs old, so you have to wonder how much of this is on them alone, and how much is it just them being pawns in a bigger game? The thing with Reiner is he genuinely couldn’t help but become the big brother, and tends to always try and be the hero. It was crueler what he did, unlike Annie and Bertholdt who kept to themselves. Only you realize all his actions weren’t to get closer to the enemy or anything, he made friends with Eren before even knowing he was a Titan. By doing this cruel thing to his friends, he also goes through a world of hurt. You could see from 2 episodes ago, when Bert says he’s less of a warrior (Bert was trying to jog Reiner’s memories back), Reiner honestly didn’t know what he meant. He made such a deep web of lies to trap the scouts only to be the one most trapped by it… because he ended up loving them all. The thing is, even the other two, Annie and Bert care about the scouts. Reiner just took the forefront of it all because he made himself the inspiration for some of the members. Onto Bert, my man definitely gets hate for being made the face of the titans. But that’s now Aot works. The show teaches you that, not only is everything not what it seems, the world also doesn’t work the way you know it too. We’re comfortable making assumptions about the story, about how inside this muscly beast must be an evil conspirer of the collapse of humanity, but what we find is a teenager who’s been tasked with genocide for reasons yet unknown, and from the looks of it, can’t and won’t fight back against those unknowns. He works in the shadow, barely saying anything, doing anything, but is calculated, careful, and nervous. But despite all this, strangely enough as we zoom into their faces before they transform, Reiner’s the one who looks determined, while Bert’s the one with a regretful face. Perfect juxtaposition. Remember, those who can’t sacrifice anything can’t change anything. Eren was able to abandon his humanity to gain the leg over Annie. Meanwhile Bert and Reiner have sacrificed along their humanity: their sanity, honor, and happiness basically. What reason could they be doing this for, that they’re willing to strip themselves of any goodness? From their perspective, this HAS to happen, but what in the world could drive them into such a monstrous corner? The answer lies in what they only have left now that they’ve lost themselves: desperation. The personal missions every human has, in the hands of these titan shifters, are the only thing they can cling onto for any semblance of control. These drives will become more prevalent as the story goes on but it’s also been shown a lot in the show already, you just gotta look for it ;)

9:06 So Sasha saying Annie likes sweets is actually strong evidence. They have pretty much no sugar within the walls. Sweets are only consumed by the richest people within the wall Sina (the innermost), and Annie supposedly comes from a small village outside the walls. Annie is not supposed to even tried sugar as there's no way someone is baking sweets outside the walls, so how does she likes it in the first place?

Remember when Annie first appeared as the Female Titan? Armin had already pretty much figured out it was her, but he confirmed it with his whole "you killed that suicidal bastard" speech. Well after that encounter, Armin, Reiner and Jean were stuck out side the wall with only two horses. Armin realizing he was the weakest link in terms of combat offered to get left behind but on ONE condition. That Reiner report "something" directly to commander Erwin if possible. We don't know what though because Historia comes with an extra horse just in time. If Armin told Reiner he knew Annie was the female, things would have turned out VERY different. Sasha also brought up a very good point. Annie was from the Outer walls in a small village where their primary food was hunting and corn. It's unlikely she would have ever had sweets unless she was lying about where she was from.

During the rewatch, you can realize how many clues you've been given all along about Reiner and Berthold - the close-ups when the conversation about the titans comes up, the steam from Reiner when he's carrying Armin, how Reiner pulling back the hoodб and so on. But the first reaction to that moment is priceless.

@@megatroneata9911 "fully understand" - true. But.. you'd have to be willfully ignorant to ignore the fact that he IS in pain and suffering from a severe inner conflict at this point in time. Same with Annie, and Bert. For one, you can do the easy math and recognize that he was a kid when he assaulted the walls first. And therefore wasn't just doing it for kicks. There's clearly someone behind it making children commit these crimes. - And secondly, like Reiner himself says: If only he never knew that there were people like this, clearly indicating his misbelief that people inside the walls were bad people. I'm not saying that everyone should be able to pick up on this. But it's quite clear that there's much more to his side at this point. So when people just devote themselves to condemn him without wanting to learn more, then it comes across as shortsightedness. If we're in Eren's position, of course we'd probably hate Reiner. But as omniscient viewers, we have so much more to go off of, to inform our feelings and decisions about the whole situation.

Annie was the first traitor and it took Eren a long time to decide to fight her. At this point, although he took the betrayal very hard, he turned into a Titan relatively quickly (by the way, you can see Armored Titan's torn arm from Eren's transformation at the end of the episode). There was also one moment during the fall of the tower where Berthold was ready to bite himself to survive (Rainer i guess didn't need it because he had injury already), but Ymir came and saved everyone.

If you go further, spoiler >S3E19 herring isn't something that should make sense to any of the two if they were in a world that inside the wall for a century with no sea and books forbidden to mention anything about the outside, that show us the two of them come from outside and somewhere where there is sea and herrings or have access to ... (Langage on it is a hint but could also be a tribe even inside the wall of people living far from others, as we are said they came with Annie from the same not so-known region, that could only be a sign Ymir was from the same sector ...)

I think any 2x06 comment section without this joke is incomplete lol. After all, we did get the biggest reveal in the history of AoT, it was absolutely flabbergasting to know that Annie actually liked sweets! The hints were always there, dude. Reiner and Bertholdt were acting real sus ever since the beginning of the season. Reiner stopped Connie from trying to figure out what was happening in his village and led him away. He found out the truth about Ymir. Check out the frames where the tower was going to fall alongwith the squad. Bertholdt was about to transform the hell on top of them. Before that, Bertholdt said Reiner was a warrior but now he's becoming a softie since he risked his life to save Connie. Everyone was giving Reiner and Bertholdt the side eyes this episode because they already knew. Mikasa was quick to hush Sasha when she accidentally blurted out that they had found ‘another’ titan. Mind you these people still didn't know anything about the events with Annie, because all of that happened a day ago. Overall, despite the mild hints that somehow reached you through the comments that something was about to happen, it still turned out to be a good surprise for you! Liked this a lot! AoT has now many seasons under it's name, but this reveal is one of the greatest moments in the animé to this date. I find this episode to have infinite re-watch potential. Everytime I hear this OST, I get chills and goosebumps. As someone else already suggested, this is probably the second biggest plot twist in the show and we get it this early in the series. One of my favourite moments in any piece of media I've seen. Phenomenally good. The look of betrayal in the end was satisfying af. “Fck these guys.” Yeah, we all went through that pain unfortunately. But hey, the show is going to get better and better. I told you, right? There are no (okay, negligible) plotholes. Isayama is a freaking genius, and everything will make sense in the end. Keep up the good work! (You're my favourite AoT reaction channel among those currently watching the show. Just wanted to say this as appreciation.)

This was definitely an epic reveal and going back, there were so many hints of them being sus! They were just so off to the side, and away from the main plot line, that there was just no way I could catch it. Bro, I felt so betrayed and still feel a little bit to be honest but life goes lmao.
