Yeah. This is similar to the beginning of My Cousin Vinny where the protagonist admits to doing what he did thinking that it's about some minor felony when in fact the protagonist's been arrested for murder, but the words are thrown back and forth in such a way between him and the cops to where the misunderstanding continues. And like in My Cousin Vinny, they're in the Bible belt where the protagonist is from up north (and the minor crime that he actually did was steal a can of tuna there and give a hitchhiker a ride here)

But this scene here in "Something about Mary" was most similar to the "My cousin Vinny" scene where he admits his crime to the detectives thinking that it's about something more minor but the detectives thinks he's confessing to a murder they think he committed.

I've never understood why this scene seems to get overlooked. The writing is absolutely brilliant, and the performances spot on. I know the hair gel and dog scenes have that visual gross out factor, but this is my favourite.

What's funny is you could see how Ben Stiller's character would get in trouble for something he didn't do. Because he says how many were there and the guy answers. But he picked up a hitchhiker but in the movie in this scene it seems like it seems like you know the viewer seems like he really killed all these people and that's kind of funny cuz he never did but the viewer has an idea that maybe he did
