Iron Lung is an underwater horror game in which you're trapped in a submarine and take photographs of mysterious objects on the ocean floor. By the way, it's an ocean of blood. OK bye, have fun!

ambience is key. for example, in STALKER: shadow of chernobyl, lab x-18 was pretty scary for my first time through. even with decent body armor, an assault rifle, armor piercing ammo, explosives, and plenty of healing items, i was terrified at the notion of navigating the place.

@JoeTAC
@JoeTAC 2 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of parallels. An iron lung is just like the sub, you're trapped in, you can never leave. It's small, cramped, limited visibility. The entire game is an analogy to being stuck in an iron lung in an abandoned hospital, waiting for your oxygen to run out, wondering what happened to everyone. You start to hear noises, wondering what's going on around you. Maybe an animal wanders by, sniffing around but you can't see it because your head doesn't turn far enough to look down.
@csongorkakuk5871

@JoeTAC
@JoeTAC 2 жыл бұрын
@@csongorkakuk5871 I'm imagining like this long abandoned hospital, where the glass doors are shattered and stray animals just wander in and out in search of shelter and food. Of course, the man in the iron lung can't know that, and can't turn to see the animals walking around near the floor, he can only hear them moving around the hospital or his iron lung. Kind of like John can hear something around the sub, but can never catch it on camera - until that one part.
@Safiyahalishah

@@mmkorn22 Thank you :). I'm just very thankful that I found John's channel. I have a heavy depression and general anxiety/emetophobia, so I can't pay much attention to maaany stuff (I don't even watch cartoons anymore. Only animated movies and few ones) and John is the only one that makes me laugh and watch the entire video without having attention issues or lazyness. So when I'm feeling pretty down, I look for the funnier ones he has to cheer myself up or watch another channel I really love, about ragdoll cats. That's why I do it normally with the content creators I enjoy watching. Because they put so much effort and I would love for them to just receive sweet things for their hard work and make them feel as good as they make me feel ♥. Love out to your way too, hopefully! ❤️

That was really cool! I think you would enjoy the game called Barotrauma, it's not a first-person game but it does have that deep-sea atmosphere, especially when you need to dive down and salvage wrecks etc. It could be a fun multiplayer game with your friends!

Wow, I loved watching this playthrough. I found myself genuinely encapsulated in the setting and scared with the environment, despite it being a little bit out there (a pool of blood in space). You are right, the gameplay mechanics were a little dry, but I thought it added to the game in some ways by limiting the way you could move. I wonder if there is more to see in the game by just exploring and taking pictures all around the map, aside from the preset nodes. Great game and great playthrough!

I really wish there were more underwater-based horror games. Feels like there could be so much done with it because it's got such a unique kind of terror to it. This was cool to watch. it was a nice simple idea that didn't overload with us with useless information and even though the tension points were obvious, it was still successful with its atmosphere/spook. I wouldn't have the patience for that navigating though x.x thanks for sharing this!

Something this game makes me wonder is "would creatures living in a sea of blood need skin, or circulatory systems altogether?" Would they evolve to function more like autonomous organs in a larger organism than individual creatures? With that constant shared bloodstream would there be any need for predation, or even feeding? What would life look like when the external is the same as the internal?

I really enjoyed this one! Underwater horror is one of my favorites because the ocean is so vast and still largely unexplored like...there could be something down there and we would never know...😱 I agree it was very analytical, the map really took me back to math class, I don't think I could play this game on my own, on account of being math illiterate, but watching John do it was a blast!

I feel like it does weaken the stakes a bit to start with the player character proclaiming that they don't care if they don't make it. It was poetic, and having the character acknowledge that they're being sent to die was atmospheric, but the second half of the note was just "ok okay don't worry about this character I guess."

I have submechanophobia too, and underwater shipwrecks creep me out so badly, but I'm so fascinated by them at the same time. Something about the fact that something like the Titanic sitting at the bottom of the ocean, in the cold darkness, just gives me the heebie jeebies.

This was pretty good for a one off. The atmosphere of navigating through a place you are completely blind to. Working with nothing but a map containing vague points of interest for direction. Interesting concept that I can appreciate. The photo system was a nice touch too. But just like you John, I need more visual substance from my horror. Still, was fun while it lasted. Just kind of limiting. Since you can't see what's happening so you just have to push through it and hope for the best. Either you crash into a wall or object and game over, run out of oxygen, or get eaten by some beast you absolutely know is out there waiting for you to run into it. Barotrauma does something similar but with more visuals.

This reminds me of a game that came out a bit ago, it was made by the same guy that made the game called "My Body," where you are a student that morphs a willing participant in to a hideous monster while being talked through about the process. The game this reminds me of was about a guy that was obsessed with finding and studying the fossils of the 'precursors' of humanity by going back and forth from submarine and deep sea scuba diving. (Sorry for long comment, name of games escape me)

There's so much to love in this game, like there's sometimes things in the background of the images that disappear. At 14:56, you can see a face in the bottom left window, then when John readjusts it's gone. That can also happen with the big fish in the background of the bones too. David Szymanski is such a good developer, it's nice to see someone taking advantage of making the player use their imagination and sound to form their own horror (especially if the deep sea scares you), and it still has a jumpscare pay off after all the build up. Man's a legend.

the idea of a lonely universe is already horrifiying and something that has been explored in media plenty, but the concept of a literally empty universe with nothing but a few humans and trillions of moons...that could easily become its own series of horror game classics.

I’m not really afraid of the ocean or space, like the void or not knowing what is out there, what does it to me and the reason I think Soma is one of the greatest horror stories is the goal in the hopeless mission. They give you a task and the fact that you’re running out of air and you are not getting out of there becomes kind of secondary, the sense of achievement keeps you entertained enough. Even if you took that one last picture, then what? You are spending the rest of your life waiting for the oxygen to deplete. The idea that you did everything you could, knowing it was for nothing, that is the best type of horror. The reminder that we are truly powerless. I wish I could forget Soma and watch it again for the first time. Rant over. Great video as usual John!!!

I’m pretty sure the note about the mission being hopeless was written by the convict you play as, if it was someone before you then they would’ve had to use the same submarine and somehow keep it in tact which I doubt. If they died then surely their submarine would’ve been destroyed? If they drowned then the blood would’ve destroyed the note, if it was fire the note would’ve been burnt. Running out of oxygen maybe..but I think it makes more sense for it to be written by the player Idk just my thoughts

I'm really impressed that the picture changes depending on where the sub is. When it was first stated that there were no windows and you'd only be able to view the outside world through the photographs, I thought that there'd be specific pictures for each location triggered by having the right coordinates and anything else would just be a random image of nothing picked from a library. But that the image changes a little bit when you back away from the correct area suggests that the map may be completely modeled, even if only roughly. I now wonder if you go above the specific coordinates and turn around if you will get the opposite view of the skeletons/sea serpents/whatever the target is.
