Not to mention that cows are prey animals so they are also keen on masking physical signs of pain. Its why injury on cows can seemingly become lame overnight. Our family milk cow pulled this on my parents last year an developed an infection in the heel area similar to this. She developed a softball sized infection an when the vet came she didn't even get to lance it, it poped when she just raised her hoof. She got a cactus thorn in there ( *somehow* even though we don't have them on our property anymore) an it slowly got worse over the course of a month or so but only showed it till well into lameness. Poor girl is fully healed now though.

I had an abscess in the end of a middle finger--it swelled up like a cherry tomato, but with white blotches where the pus was showing through the skin. Pain from pressure is REAL--I could not think about anything else. The moment it was lanced, there was a HUGE amount of pain relief.
@genehen64953 жыл бұрын
the analogy of "a small cut on your hand isnt nice, but its when it gets infected that it really hurts" is nice. Chickens are so scared of being seen as weak that they will pretend to be fine, even when extremely ill. They are good actors and it can be hard to tell when they are sick, because they are prey animals that almost everything in the world eats. I wonder if it can be the same for cows? Will cows avoid showing injury or illness, even when severe, fearing predation?
@HooplaCakeMace3 жыл бұрын
That is very interesting. Ironic that we use chicken to call someone a wuss, but that fact would suggest that it is an unrealistic stereotype.

Same even with predator like cat. Cat dont want to be seen by bigger animal when they sick because it make them vurnerable That's why sick cat hide them self in cave or under couch, if this symptoms happen get vet
@scoutman663 жыл бұрын
Cows are extremely tough and will never really show it when they're sick. They have to be on the verge of kicking the bucket if they ever show serious signs of pain or discomfort. Most obvious is when they're lying down for long periods at a time instead of energetically playing or eating like they normally do
@tzviru3 жыл бұрын
as you said, chickens are prey and so not looking weak has its evolutionary advantage, a cow has no need to hide weakness. although it is true that a lot (if not most) of mammals don't whine when they're sick, not sure why, probably because it will attract predators which is the last thing that any animal needs when it's sick

It just sucks because cows lack the ability to understand why they’re in pain. In humans, we understand that pain can be temporary and that gritting your teeth and bearing it can lead to relief soon. With animals like cows, they don’t understand why they’re hurting or that relief will be coming soon. Obviously it’s necessary but still, seeing creatures who don’t know any better in pain is always difficult.

I can concur that released pressure of an infection feels AMAZING. I once had a dental abscess, which is a pocket of pus and bacteria inside the gums at the root of a tooth. The pain from it was severe, it was a constant throbbing pain that took 800 mg of ibuprofen and a Tylenol for it to subside enough for it to not be debilitating. Once I finished taking antibiotics for a few weeks, my dentist drilled a hole through the infected tooth and released all of that pus, and it was utter relief. All of that pain, instantly gone. I can imagine it felt similar for the cow lol

I love cows. They're full of personality, & you would never expect it. They're very smart too. I live in an area surrounded with nothing but fields and cows, and I never realized cows had such issues with the hooves, I've never seen bandages ever wrapped on the cows feet near me.

That had to feel better releasing that pressure from the abscess. And the cow at the end with the brown color was such a pretty cow. Love watching the videos. ♥️

Watching them walk away in less pain is the best part. Linger a bit longer.

The steam from the heat coming out of that open lesion... wow. Can't imagine how much pain she was in with that kind of infection. Thank you for sharing your work!
