"Ghost Train" pretty much was staple for the franchise because more scary episodes were to come following in the future, like in Season 5, and of course sparked so much fan content every Halloween. It's one of the best episodes ever made.

Honestly IMO Thomas isn't really _as_ rude as some may say in regards to Percy's accident. Let me explain. Mainly referring to the dialogue at the sheds, it's important to pay attention to the wording. Toby says to Thomas that "Percy's had an accident". This doesn't really state he's dead, so Thomas assumes he just derailed or something. Considering one of the accidents Percy had this season was because he didn't listen to Thomas's advice regarding warning signs (Percy Takes The Plunge), he does have a reason to be cross about it. I mostly believe that Thomas doesn't think Percy's dead up until he saw his "ghost". After that he probably mourned his supposed death in the carriage shed but didn't tell anybody to try and keep up an image. At least, that's how I interpret the events of Ghost Train.
@ItsTrainBoy
@ItsTrainBoy Жыл бұрын
I honestly agree with that; but to be fair Toby did tell Thomas he had seen ‘Percy’s Ghost’ and it was on the way to them while in the shed? Ofc there’s always the side of him not believing that but his initial response is more “I’ll protect you, don’t worry about it” ya know? I chop it up to them just not being as close yet personally 😅

I quite agree with you. When I was a kid, I thought it was excessive for Percy to basically scar Thomas when all the latter did was call him a silly engine for not being scared of Ghosts. I also believe that Thomas wasn’t really that particularly rude about Percy. His frustration with him was justified with what you said about danger signs.

An episode that deservedly needed the recognition, and it's finally got it. Not only is this episode an amazing spooky episode, but it's a stepping stone for the Thomas franchise as the series' first major experiment outside the usual light-hearted stories we are used to seeing. While the original story isn't bad per se, the episode did a much better job at making the story feel scary and give us that eerie feel. Also, huge props to them for the intended ambiguousness, with we as the audience never knowing whether the engine at the start was really a Ghost engine or not. That leaves us to think of the episode even after it gets over. The Ffarquhar trio is dope and I wished to see more of them in the future. Thomas and Percy's dynamic is also hilarious and everytime they interact in S2, it leaves me in splits. The spooky atmosphere, perfect narration by both the narrators, the character dynamics, and the three-way structure made this episode a hallmark in the history of the show. A truly special episode indeed.

Not nearly enough people I see talk about this episode mention this one detail at the end. When Percy comes whistling into Tidmouth the morning, we hear the same whistle used for the ghost train in the opening, and fast puffing, even though Percy is nowhere to be seen until AFTER Thomas leaves. Everyone talks about how Duncan Gets Spooked did the ambiguous "was there really a ghost" ending, but the crew was already pulling this sort of stuff before then, hell, even before that Neptune face in TUGS. It's such a small detail, but the way it's presented is so suggestive, especially since Thomas leaves RIGHT after the audience hears the whistle and puffing.

Fantastic episode. I remember watching this as a young child and being half-scared by the opening scene: the dramatic music, the owl hooting, the foggy background and Ringo's narration; as well as the "ghost" train itself passing through. All the pieces fit perfectly.

So because I’m in my thirties I first had this episode on VHS. The “Percy’s Ghostly Trick and Other Thomas Stories” VHS starts with Thomas’ anthem music video and just as those final notes finish we jump RIGHT INTO THE GHOST TRAIN MUSIC! Talk about emotional whiplash for a child, terrifying. Also the first scene after the tale of the ghost used to take place during the day, I’m still not quite used to it being at night I’m the restored version.

You're like, 4, 5 years old, you sit down to another episode of your favourite show, the title theme you remember does its usual spiel to get you hyped, and right as it stops, you get thrown into that dark foggy scene, and that music, that goddamn music plays. This might be your first brush with horror, but it will stick with you forever. They did not need to go this hard and yet they did and I love em for it. That rhythmic scratching noise in the ghost train theme reminded little me of train puffing, like the ghost train is following you and you're trying to get away, and spawned a lot of little me's nightmares.

This episode was amazing and your highlighted all the best qualities, the music sets and everything comes together for what I believe is the best episode of season 2. I'm glad to see another video from you as it's been a while, also on the discussion of Thomas' character. My version of Thomas' is cheeky, and self assured, he has matured from his younger years, and now he's a bit wiser, and cares for the railway and his peers. So basically what I imagine his character would be in the years between seasons 4 and 5. Percy is basically perfect in this episode character wise and same with Toby. I love them just ganging up on Thomas, that dynamic should've been brought up more. It's a shame we didn't see more of that. The music is perfect and I didn't expect anything less from Mike and junior. The music is probably the most important part of the tone in this episode, the sets do play a big role too but if the music was any less then I don't know if the set design can carry. Overall amazing vid highlighting a gem of an episode, sorry for making this like two paragraphs long.

Not only were dark lighted and stormy skies episodes gave me a chill such as Toby and the Flood, Stepney Gets Lost, but as I grow older, I realise the soundtrack is what made me love and fear these episodes alike, Ghost Train’s unique theme, Toby and the Flood, Put Upon Percy and Stepney Gets Lost had the disaster theme and even were tweaked to match the episode, Haunted Henry/ Something in the Air (i’m sure you know which soundtrack of those two), and Toby’s Discovery as Toby does night watch. It’s a powerful combination of set design and score that no matter how old I am, i’ll still get a chill Also, gotta respect a guy that uses Mario Party DS soundtrack, my man!

This episode was so good. Funnily enough, this episode didn't scare me as much when I was a kid as much as "Saved from Scrap" and "Escape" did. For whatever reason, the scrapyards in the show really scared me. Was it the overtones of mortality? Was it the thought that my favourite characters could die? Eh, it was probably because of that one scene from _The Brave Little Toaster._ For the record, I never saw Duncan Gets Spooked as a kid so I can't share any stories about that. Sadly a lot of narrow gauge stuff passed me by as I only had VHS of the earlier seasons, and by the time I was watching Thomas on TV, it was already into the HiT era.

I like to think Thomas thought Toby was just being stupid at first, but when he hears Percy’s ghostly voice, he becomes like you said terrified, so Thomas thought Percy was dead and came back to get back at him for treating him as silly. Only in the next episode to realize he never died.

When I was a kid, I never really thought much of Thomas and Percy’s character in this episode (and I never really compared the Seasons 1-2 versions of Thomas to his later, nicer versions). When I was a kid, I was spooked out by the production and atmosphere of this episode. And as I got older, I slowly understood of what the dialogue meant. When I was in my early teens, I thought Percy took it a little too far in scaring Thomas who all he called him was a silly little engine. But later on, while I do still have some thoughts on Percy’s motives, I can understand that from Thomas seemed more concerned on being late than Percy’s safety and the fact that Percy presumably died . . . Like, goddamn it really makes you think. I guess I’m thinking more of the perspectives. Like how Percy scarred Thomas just from him calling him silly and that he doesn’t believe in ghosts, but later, you can kinda understand of why it happened. Given the fact that Ghost Train was in Book 26 of the Railways Series, a book that Rev. W. Awdry only made because the people wanted one more Thomas book, really makes you think of what it would’ve been like if this story, and the episode that was adapted later, never existed.

@@armorpro573 maybe not scary visuals, but perhaps some moments that aren’t exactly happy, but can indeed be upsetting. One current kids show that does that well is Bluey. The episode, Camping, will have you bawling!

@@bladeobrian2144 Funny, I thought that was another ordinary children's show, but now after watching a few clips, it's not actually that bad.

If you do a slight rework of the episode where Henry gets painted in glow in the dark paint then it could be on par with this. Instead of a episode where Henry gets depressed because everyone runs away from him.

It's probably the most creepiest episode up to date. Stephey Gets Lost is the most darkest and Duncan Gets Spooked is the most tragic.

To be honest, as much as the set design, music and atmosphere is really great, i'll be honest I was never scared of this episode when i watched it on The Very Best of Thomas & Friends, I think because we know the ghost is Percy throughout, in a way it takes away from the spookiness of the episode, whereas Haunted Henry and Toby's Discovery (in my view) are better as the spookiness comes from the fact that the "scare factor" I suppose you could say, comes from fear of the unknown and the fact we only know as much as the character's do whereas episodes like this, Duncan Gets Spooked & Halloween aren't as spooky as we know what is going on during the episode. Point is, Ghost Train in my opinion is a great episode just not a very scary one despite the great effort put in by the production team.

I'm still curious about what Percy's driver saw on TV. It could easily just be some random made up thing, but what if it's the actual movie "The Ghost Train" from 1941? No clue if TV reruns happened with British TV in the 60s, it has a similar crash/myth.
