From humble beginnings, and with the winds of expertise beneath his wings, Jon Stewart became one of the greatest television hosts of all time. Let's dive into both the controversy, the successes, and what makes him so darn appealing.

One of the things that sets him apart and makes him more relatable is that he reacts to the news with us instead of telling us the news. He lets the clips speak for themselves and then builds his point from them. Everyone else is uses the clips to prove their point.

@@thompsonnoel Satire as cover for propaganda. You can have political opinion, but when its clear to put an idea and being a hypocrite at the same time. Its can only be propaganda. JS did the same thing as Trump valuing his property at a higher rate than what it was worth.
@thompsonnoel

@@mahaffer71 Trump misled lenders by inflating the property value of his business assets which is fraud. Jon Stewart found a buyer willing to buy a house at a high market value. Property value and market value are completely different things. Then again, It's understandable to have a problem with that but if you do what you have is a problem with capitalism. That makes you a cool cat!

It's not the same as Trump. Trump overvalued the assets in his property in order to get loans easily approved, things like square footage, even, and then undervalued it when he was reporting for taxes . Jon Stewart simply sold it at a higher value to a private entity who accepted that price. Nothing to do with Trump in the slightest.

I remember his show on 9/11. I watched it terrified and confused at the time as a teenager. It helped me understand that everyone was upset and scared - even those who were rich and famous. It's one of the strongest memories I have of that day. It was the only part of the day I had a moment of calm and could grieve rather than shake with fear. His work, activism, and legacy will never have words on the impact.

As an Australian, I rarely saw any of Jon Stewart's Daily show other than a few clips where he confronted the likes of Bill O'Reilly, or later appearances on Colbert. Having seen a few of his recent programs, I have to agree that he's the best TV host I've ever seen. His intelligence and sharp wit is always tempered by humility and compassion, and I think he's a true inspiration to others. It's said that: "Great leaders are people who don’t seek power but take responsibility because they have the capability and empathy to help others." If Stewart was encouraged to run for President in 2028, he'd A) Make a great president, and B) Avoid any Biden Administration baggage.

As a foreigner, not fluent in english, I never watched US TV show. We don't have them, and I didn't really care about them (not my country, not my culture, you know...) With what is happening since Trump, and especially with the current presidential campaign, I started to watch everything I could get on KZbin that talk about that. I started to see old Daily show episodes (with Trevor Noah), and just a few months after that John Stewart came back. He is, by far, my favorite host of those kind of shows. Many are really biased and act like they're going to give a lesson. It's really annoying when (like me) you try to understand what is happening. And I say this while being against Trump, and still sometimes I feel it's too much. Stewart is fair, honest, professional and also extremely funny, really he is just as perfect as it can be for his job. I can also see a lot of potential in Jordan Klepper, when he tries to be neutral. His interview to put Trump supporters in their own contradictions are just a jewel ! John Oliver is also good, but not as much as John Stewart. (Sorry if I made any mistakes, I know it's good enough to be understood, but still)

I would love to see a "part two" of this, that goes more in-depth about how he's not only basically made the landscape of political satire, but also made a great impact on what's followed on the foundation he's laid, going further in on what you touched slightly here, with the like of Carrell, Colbert and especially Olliver, who I think has made the most success and kept on this track, albeit in his very own style. Great work as always.

His best Alumni is absolutely John Oliver. The two are very much on that same playing field of keeping it straight when discussing nuanced topics but inject enough comedy to make you feel more optimistic about the terror you’re having to listen to. John however I do think has an unmatched charisma. Where his badshit energy matches the badshit thing he’s talking about. That’s what makes him enduring and I think the reason why the Daily show continues to struggle to find a future without him is fundementally because they want to look for another John, and that person doesn’t exist. I would 100% not be surprised if they offer him the job again. He does well on TV, and online too. The man truly is unmatched in his craft. P.S - Samantha Bee was also very good and deserved better.

@PaginatedStar45
@PaginatedStar45 Ай бұрын
@audramcdonaldapologist3676 I don't think you understand his full life there. You mention his comedy, which was always harsh and meant to get the crowd uncomfortable. It was meant to be entertainment. It has absolutely no correlation to his actual character. You wouldn't say an actor is a terrible person if their on-screen character beat someone in the movie. It is the same for comedy. When they're doing their acts, they are more so putting on a character. Bo Burnam is a great example, as throughout some of his earlier shows, he would have pre-recorded audio that he would have conversations with as though it was a character of his show. You can't judge a comedian off of their jokes. Jokes will never truly represent them. That's why when I say he's a nice person, it's because what I have heard people say about him when he is not putting on a performance. Andy Reichert had a great instance of this where Norm talked to Andy's sister an hour and a half before a show because she was nervous and distraught in life. He even said that his sister felt comforted by Norm as he was going in depth in their conversation and trying to help her. So yes, despite his jokes like the one on Teena, I would say he was a sweet and nice guy.
@EvelynBaron
@EvelynBaron Ай бұрын
@@PaginatedStar45Yeah, I never get that people conflate a performance with the performer. A good example not perhaps that well known in the US is the actor David Tennant (Dr. Who is a UK institution) who is famous for playing villains but in real life incredibly generous and agreeable and ... has a true moral compass. Also happens to be, according to me, a great stage actor who knew he was going to give up his privacy when in that context he became really well known in Britain, wouldn't talk about his family for years until recently, went into therapy for anxiety. He said I just think there's a lack of decency and kindness in the world and if I had any advice to give anyone it would be show up, learn your lines and don't be a jerk. Works for me.

Jon is EXTREMELY POLITICAL in a way where he believes every single thing he says and stands for, he does the work to fight for it, and it comes from a place of deep empathy and care for his fellow human beings. It seems almost antithetical to his role as a "Hollywood" talk show host, but it's something people value. He does not prevaricate, he does not hide from criticism and he does not stand by hypocrisy. He does not think politics is about standing with one party and staying there, but with the consistent and active work for the sake of those who need it most. It's why he isn't afraid of criticizing people he ostensibly shares politics with, because his principles matter more than teams or parties, and those he criticizes are more likely to have betrayed those principles and politics before he did.

I mean, you can claim that, but it' not like Carlin didn't make it clear, via his comedy, which side he was on. Yes, morons ignore anything he said that showed how he felt, but I mean, the comedy shows and books he wrote are there for all to read and not ignore when its inconvenient. I don't think someone's slant being clear in the comedy is a problem in and of itself - many comedians make it clear if you listen to enough of them.

You need to watch Jon’s testimony in front of the House committee regarding first responders! If that doesn’t move you…I’m sorry. The fact that he calls out Mike Johnson is ironic.

Didn’t realize it until now but Jon Stewart was def the first political commentator I remember actively watching, on Comedy Central, when we still had TV channels. 😅

Jon Stewart left us when we needed him most. Truth is, I don't trust him as much as I used to.

What do you mean „we got used to him“? I started watching the Daily Show in 2006 and it was my window into US politics & culture and I watched him religiously. When he held the Rally to Restore Sanity in 2010 I flew to DC for the weekend to participate. As a random German guy who simply adored Jon. One of the most unreasonable and awesome things I did in my 20s. So glad he‘s back 🥹

I don’t agree 100% with Jon’s politics, but I admire the fact that he’s able to make me laugh at things that I normally wouldn’t consider funny. I’m very interested to see where he goes forward. I hope it goes well for him.

The Daily Show and the Colbert Report were my staples in the late 00s and early 10s. Colbert seems more fake now than he was on the Report, which is ironic because he was playing a character.

Yes and no. I saw his recent interview with Paul Simon; he wasn't trying to be funny and it was really amazing.

The only problem with Jon Stewart, is that I want to see more of him doing the news and the interviews. He has been on fire since he came back, definitely taking a little something from his Apple TV show.
