I feel the premise of this is pretty naive: most people never get their break. Among them, there are some extremely brilliant individuals. This is probably because we are not really a meritocratic society (as in "Western Society"). In the US, you might get a break if someone smells the money in you. In Europe, that is not gonna happen. There might be jealousy or politics involved, but higher ups rarely see talent on their own. You have to sell yourself, and that is often very bad, because those who can sell themselves might be great at marketing but lousy at what should be their core skills. You can see this throughout history and there is no indication today is any different. See Leibnitz vs. Spinoza, for example.

He was never a good actor because he never acted. He was the character, always, in every role. The cameras may as well not be there because he always forgot they were.

Not sure if you used a different interview intentionally or not but the one Christian Bale refers to as inspiration for his character in American Psycho is an interview between Cruise and Letterman in 1993. It’s on KZbin somewhere, you should watch it. The mannerisms are similar in the interview you’ve put in here but they’re much more obvious and exaggerated in the Letterman one and you can genuinely see what Bale means about the lifeless eyes above Tom’s smile.

Hoffman was one of the greatest character actors I've ever witnessed. Also would like to give Christopher Evan Welch a nod (the opposition in The Master scene). Only caught his work towards the end, but he was turning into a great character actor as well. Sadly, both were taken too soon.

im just sad that living in germany i can not obtain a copy in original language. the play around languages is so central and i just can not watch this movie in the german dub. (they do speak french like in the original, but any english scene is german.)

Landa never really sees her face as she's running away from him at the farmhouse. If he had, he'd have recognized her in the restaurant and disappeared her before the film was shown. No way he would allow some wildcard to interfere with putting on the film- if he was to allow for the coup, it would be on his terms, not anyone else's. No way in hell he recognized her.

Sorry, but I find these "Oh where has Christopher Waltz been hiding!" videos almost unbearable. 1) It might be a surprise to you, but there are dozens of comparably brilliant actors out there in every single national cinema, 99 % of them never ever get cast in an US film, not to even mention people who are not as fluent in English as Waltz is or are not as commercially applicable. 2) Waltz did not "deserve better", he had the career he chose staying in Austria, and a successful career at that. 3) Do you think he would ever get his big break if it wasnt for a totally niche role in the type of film that happens once in 20 years? 4) If Waltz was such a gem, how many of his European movies have you seen? 5) If Tarantino was his huge break, what remarkable US productions did he do since?

@1:02 "End up taking the world by storm??" No it didn't.. sorry to burst your american bubble (The world is actually a lot bigger than you guys, The United States makes up about 4-5% of the world's population) - A typical US you tube video commentator not researching beyond his own borders - It was barely a footnote outside of the USA, the humour just doesnt translate that well and at best its a "cult" film which usually translates as a limited audience to those that like it.... 72% on rotten tomatoes, Average rating of 6.4/10 - I also don't see any awards outside the USA for this film, sorry it didn't take the world by storm.

SS Colonel Hans Landa and Dr. King Schultz, two of my favorite acting performances I've ever seen in film. He easily sits alongside the greatest actors that immediately come to mind. It's the kind of performance that makes you think things like, "He was born to play this role." or, "He was so good they made a character specifically for him." Christoph Waltz fits so perfectly into both of these characters that it's hard to see him as anything but those performances. Add to that his extremely charismatic yet humble appearances in the public eye, and you get a sense that this man was simply purpose-built to be an actor. I truly hope he enjoys the experience as much as his audience does.
