Yeah, I use one at work. I have m3 pro at home. Def take the m3 anyday over the '19 16". Lotta bugs and general slowness on Sonoma, and can't use Ventura because some stuff I use needs Sonoma drivers. M3 runs circles around it, and the keyboard feels better too on the m3 imo

Still rocking my 2019 MBP 16 and typing on it now. It feels like a cadillac, still powerful and robust for everything I need. Amazing sound and studio quality mics; great screen for color work; and there's nothing I throw at it that it doesn't run (I even play the Batman Arkhan games, Shadow of Mordor, Tomb Raider and they all look amazing), including tons of open tabs and apps running at the same time. I have been looking for signs that I need to upgrade for years now and I am yet to find a reason to. I am also a lover of the touch bar (context-aware emojis anyone??) and I am almost sure this Macbook will last long enough until Apple goes full circle and brings the touchbar back (so brave)

I had one of these and switched to a M2 Max 16-inch. The experience is much better over-all. The fans would frequently be on full blast with the machine, the battery life was atrocious, you needed to have dedicated graphics enabled at all times for a smooth UI experience, and the single layer IPS screen was no competition for the mini-LED screens on the newer models. I did find the speakers to sound better than my 16-inch M2 Max though.

I've had this exact one in your video (i9, 5500) with the Touch Bar for several years, it's done me right. I actually love the touch bar! The way it adapted to different apps was/is great. In photoshop I can easily drag for transparency, color gradients etc without using the mouse. It works fantastic for scrubbing video too! The very strange predicament that led me to this video is my startup is paying for a new computer and was researching which new M3 Pro or M3 Pro Max to get and saw this video. I almost want to tell them that I don't need a new machine but that seems insane!! I wish the Touch Bar was not discontinued. :( Anywho, thanks for the video. :)

I had to upgrade because battery life is so poor. I had AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics which drained the battery so fast. Unlike older Macbooks, it isnt possible to force switch to the integrated Intel chip and lots of standard apps would activate the discrete AMD card (e.g. all Abobe suite apps). I'm trying it now after using a 14inch MacBook Pro M2 Max for about 1.5 years. I didnt look back after switching but revisiting the 16" screen is interesting and definitely has its value. The 14" is like a baby in comparison - so cute!

4:43 I actually disagree with this point, when I owned my 2016 MacBook Pro 15-inch I actually found it to be slower to drag the slider to adjust the volume and brightness rather than quickly press a physical key to do the same thing. The tactile feel of a real button is still better even if the slider may seem simpler, you still have to look down at the slider to make sure you're hitting it, whereas the physical keys on a real function row can be felt out blindly so you don't need to look down at the keys to make sure you're hitting them correctly. When I owned my TouchBar MacBook Pro I had the functions reversed in macOS so that it emulated the function row by default (rather than holding down Fn to get it) since I never found any of the additional functions that useful, and having moved onto the 14" MacBook Pro with no TouchBar it's not something I miss.

The top end 5600M in the 2019 16 inch actually beats the base M4 in Metal performance. The GPU is used extensively by apps like FCP, LightRoom, Photoshop, Motion, Resolve, and is much more important than the actual CPU in terms of performance. As a photo and video editing machine, a used 2019 16" with 32GB outperforms a similarly priced base used 8GB M1 or M2 by a massive margin. And let's not forget the option to add an eGPU over Thunderbolt. Get the cheapest 5300M model, add an RX 6900 or RX 6800 eGPU, and you're in M4 Max performance territory.

I cross-shopped this to replace my mac pro, and ended up going with an M1 max/64gb/16". The thermals were just too poor for me. I saw these used head to head against the M1 max and M1 Pros in our video department, and for someone who's often working outside, sans air conditioning (it's currently 85º where I am, we don't have A/C in the hangar) I decided to go with the cooler-running M1 despite the 2.3X price tag. I still kind of want one of these though, at $760 for a beat up one I can't help but feel it's going to be a pretty stalwart little unit for years to come, as long as you don't want too much media performance. Good parents' laptop, very refined compared to a crappy Costco Asus at the same pricepoint. The notch thing doesn't bug me at all, it's just a few free rows of pixels. Glass half-full thinking, I guess

The caps should have 0 ohms and should not overheat when voltage is injected to them. Preventive replacement is the maximum what I suppose I am able to do. Maybe even applying some protection varnish on the contacts to prevent the oxidation.

I am still running a 64GB i9 9980HK and RX5500M 8GB with 1TB of storage in 2025. That's because I use Revit and this Macbook gives me the ability to use both Windows and MacOS with maximum compatibility. If this doesn't fail on me, I will only upgrade when we have either Revit for Mac or Windows natively on Mac. (Windows for Arm or something, but using full resources.) Virtualization is not enough for Revit. I am sure I am not the only one who is frustrated with the lack of compatibility brought by Apple with their M chips. I don't care for new technology if it does not help me do my work and it is insidiously hogging resources if you have them, in order to "motivate" you to upgrade once you have an M series Mac. Thanks, but no thanks. Just tell me how much you want me to pay in order to have full compatibility and I will pay it. Otherwise, buzz off. I don't nee your new stuff. I'll stick to the old, reliable stuff as long as it serves me. If Apple continues like this, the professional Revit, 3DS max or other Windows native program users, will just quit and move to PCs. Maybe PCs aren't as good, but they will be better for native Windows apps and the professionals don't compromise. Either you give them what they need, or they move on!

I ordered a 13" 2019 Macbook Pro with the base specs from eBay for around $350... Color me surprised when they accidentally sent the 16" model! I'm not much of an Apple user, and I'm mainly using it to get used to macOS, but I do love how premium it feels while still being very compatible with things I'm used to using due to being Intel-based. Once I need a new laptop, I would honestly be tempted to get an M3 MacBook at some point just because of how much I like the quality, if I weren't already set on getting a Framework laptop instead.

Genuine question. These are going for less than current gen MacBook Air prices on certified refurbished sites, is it worth it to just pick this up instead of the air and use it for air things? I don't need all the power in the world, I'm only gonna be using it for an office job, but the seeming wealth of specs you can get on it makes me feel like an idiot right now. I've seen one with a terabyte internal, 64 gigs of memory, the higher clock speed i9, for 700 dollars, which is 300 less than an air. even if the hardware's older, surely that's gonna be able to do air-like things for longer than the air, right?
@montaguebarnabasltd
@montaguebarnabasltd Ай бұрын
@@parkerdavis7859 I really can’t recommend the Pro over the Air in this situation. Most of the benefits are trivial compared to how snappy M1 is, and how incredibly cool and silent. Depending on your perspective, Intel Macs might receive software support for a longer period compared to M1 MacBooks. My 2012 MacBook stopped receiving security updates in 2022, which prevented me from updating a browser I needed for an exam. However, when using BootCamp, my Windows 10 installation still receives support until 2025. I would assume that Intel Macs running Windows 11 would get longer support compared to macOS. Of course, the trade-off would be reduced battery life and increased fan noise.

If someone had to choose a M1 air 256 with 8gb vs something like a 1tb 32gb i7 16" intel Macbook, I would still say the 2019 intel MacBook ASSUMING it has a newer battery and not a very high battery cycle life. People will defend Apple silicon to the death in some circles even if that M1 Air had a broken screen and was dumped in water and had 500 battery cycle. The Intel is still really good, just don't pay too much like USD less than $700ish.

Like I said, all about the use case. If you can only have one computer and you want to experience Mac plus play newer graphics intensive games, the Intel model makes sense. Personally I have an older gaming desktop for demanding games but 99% of my computing and gaming needs are met by a base model M2 Air. As an actual laptop (light, thin, silent, portable, amazing battery life) Apple Silicon crushes anything else on the market in my opinion.

People are fast to forget how much performance this machine had and that is after the CPU performance stagnation on the market since Sandy Bridge - 8 cores, a desktop-like performance of a GPU, more ram and storage options. It went for half the price where I live of a modern M3 Max being in the same price category. Bigger screen, thicker design, more batteries, new (old) keyboard. You had x2.5 performance over a previous model in all aspects (!) M1 Pro/Max didn't have that over it and I'm comparing the i9 version to a Pro more, because price has shifted and Max versions have more ram by default, so that is a different price\weight category. M2 Pro 3 years later was the first machine to become marginally* faster. *Marginally as in you don't have to compare benchmark numbers to notice it is faster. BUT STILL, encode/decode is SLOWER than i9, issues with external 4k screens etc.
