I re-watched Over the Garden Wall about a week ago and I don't think it's a masterpiece or anything, but it’s honestly so magical to me that people can just make stories like these: true passion projects. I was in tears by the end of it, and I don’t know why. It was just beautiful to me. This is why I’m so against Warner (and other studios) axing shows off their platforms, because killing shows with a living, beating heart like this or Infinity Train or anything else, is too cruel. These are dedicated works of passion that deserve to stay in the light of day forever.

The masterpiece thing is more of an attention grabber rather than a description these days, but I agree with everything you say 🗣️🔥

The story of Over the Garden Wall is a retelling of Dante's Inferno (or, a walk through each of the nine circles of hell). The second episode resembles Limbo, the first, circle, in which souls who were born before Christ wait to be rescued and are not tortured but rather just left in anticipation. This reflects the pumpkin people who only ever want to stay. The third episode resembles Lust, the second circle, in which souls are blown around by harsh winds. Lust not being inherently carnal here refers to Ms. Langtree, but also the school director. If you listen carefully there is a faint wind sound as the characters enter the school. The fourth episode represents gluttony, in which souls cannot eat or drink for eternity. As an additional punishment, Cerberus guards this circle and will tear apart souls. One of only two places in which we see a dog is at the doorway of the bar, guarding the way. Additionally, though food and drink are plentiful we always see the plates of the bar patrons empty and we never see them eat. The fifth episode represents greed, in which the wealthy Quincy Endicott resides within a massive lonely home and the brothers seek coins, and even try to steal. The sixth episode is anger (wrath) and this also has the ferry, which may represent Charon. In Dante's Inferno, souls (which have been referred to as frogs, CN) lie in mud much like the frogs. The seventh episode is Heresy. The woman is possessed, her "aunt" is a witch, and her transformation is referred to by her aunt as "turning wicked". The eight episode is violence. This is the weird cloud dream in which Greg fights a cloud monster. That scene has a lot of symbolism, but also worth note is that Wirt is swallowed by trees and begins to grow into one. In Dante's Inferno, people who commit acts of violence towards themselves are turned into trees that feel pain; and this is right after Wirt gives up. the ninth episode is treachery, in which we see the beast in the light for a few frames. It is worth noting that this is the circle in which Satan is held in Dante's Inferno and the Beast is Satan. Also worth mentioning is that this circle is, within Dante's Inferno, very cold, much like the snow seen. The tenth and first episode are narrative. The first represents the entering of Hell and the tenth is likely unrelated to the circles overall. Also worth mentioning is the Beast definitely being Satan, Beatrice being the name of the lover that Dante seeks in Dante's Inferno, and Wirt's love for poetry and costume very closely resembling Dante (the main character in Dante's Divine Comedy) meaning Wirt likely represents Dante. Love the video, keep it up

So question. I don't know why I didn't pick up on this sooner. The "wolf" that is actually a dog looks like Beatrice's dog. Am I nuts did anyone else make that connection?
@thehistoryandbooknerd89799 ай бұрын
Spoilers! Yep! That dog is her and her family’s, the mill too used to be theirs before they were cursed by Adelaide to become blue birds
@NotWorthBeans169 ай бұрын
@@thehistoryandbooknerd8979 I did now know that. Like I knew it was a reference back Dante's inferno when he's attacked by the Shewolf, Lion, and Leopard but this is so much more interesting

This has a very "1800's Americana" vibe to it, and for some reason, that just suits Autumn. If you had to guess, what kind of "Americana" aesthetics would suit the other seasons? When I think "summer," that kind of 50's/60's "rock 'n' roll/Populuxe/Googie" aesthetic comes to mind. But what about winter and spring?
@Sparkedout9 ай бұрын
Interesting question, I’ll think about about it :)
@PeanutButterfly929 ай бұрын
I think winter would be represented by 1940's Americana. Mostly because a lot of iconic Christmas songs were written during this time. But also there was a lot of emphasis in that decade's pop culture of community and togetherness, as well as the awareness of the war that was happening across the seas. Which to me, kinda fits the idea of snuggling together by the fireplace while a bitter winter storm is brewing outside.
@connorscanlan21679 ай бұрын
@@PeanutButterfly92 That makes sense. It's spring that's going to really be a hard ask, since... spring isn't very iconic in the US, is it?
@PeanutButterfly929 ай бұрын
@@connorscanlan2167 Yeah, the only thing I can think of is maybe the late 1960's & 1970's flower children?
@dx.feelgood58259 ай бұрын
@@PeanutButterfly92definitely the sixties and seventies in terms of aesthetic. Led Zeppelin has a few songs that make me think of spring. Like the Rain Song. And the Beatles’ All You Need Is Love and Penny Lane make me think of late spring

I would say the Unknown is a place in a purgatorial state, but it also has things that are from hell(The Beast and the evil spirit being the main suspects). Also, fun fact, Purgatory is not under the power of the Beast in Christian doctrine, It is on the contrary an in-between place where holy souls must be purified of their inperfections before they can enter Heaven. A temporary hell one might say.

Its a great show, a really great show. It caught my attention as soon as I found a episode on some random playlist, I thought it was a show from 2000s or something but then I looked it up and yep.. 2014!!!??? that show was aired on CN along with stuff like Clearence, Uncle Grandpa and Teen Titans Go? I was blown away by how artistic and touching this show was and how good and inspiered it looked for a 2010 CN . Also the Polish dub of this show rules and I prefer to watch it in that version (I'm from Poland)

Just making an overview of the series isn't very good. You need to analyze the work you talk about. If I've seen the show you don't have to tell me what literally happened in it and if I haven't seen it I only learn the plot and I should have watched the show instead.
