In the 1999 version of HxH, this test is a bit longer. They do hunt the pigs, but then they are asked to prepare sushi, which is where everyone fails. In that version, Menchi also argues with the guy Buhara smacked, but she proves her skills by cooking a dish with a very rare ingredient from the forest. Plus, the participants have to perfectly time the boiling point of the egg. It’s just some extra scenes but they add a nice layer of complexity to the job of a Gourmet Hunter

@@godofthisshit The 2011 version is more true to the manga. When the 99 version came out, they added a lot of stuff so they wouldn't catch up with the manga so quickly. There are a lot of "filler" stories in between, but most of them are good though

@@godofthisshit No, it's in the manga, but they added the scene where Menchi prepares rice. The 2011 version skipped some scenes of the first arcs, so they could quickly get into Greed Island. That arc was an OVA in the old version and the quality was a bit questionable, to say the least. Madhouse wanted to focus on Greed Island and what came afterward.

@@bvrdiel Yea I saw the 99 version years ago(Not sure if I saw the Greed Island OVA). I do remember the 2011 rushing the first couple of arcs but I thought they did that because they figured a good amount of people saw the 99 version. Also I'm not a manga reader so what was cut out or added I couldn't tell which was cannon. Thanks for the breakdown.

I like Morgan's drawing the most. Sam gets 2nd place. I was also surprised that Gon's nose didn't help him with cooking the large pig but helped him sniff out an updraft. OH, I thought the power went out there for a moment 😳
