I've just finished reading this book and i actually did enjoyed it a lot! I didn't mind about the memory loss and I think that for the zan character, her attitudes regarding the memory loss are consistent with her character. The rest of the characters as you said i also think that they're just there to help the story go along but indeed they're not really compelling. All in all i did enjoyed the book and i did like the story telling. Haven't read anymore of the author but i liked it enough to be curious about more of her work. Nice video thanks for your opinion!

I actually bought this a couple of days ago, after seeing a very positive review by Paige from Enchantology. I'v only read 2 books by Hurley so far, The Mirror Empire and God's War. To me, as someone whose biggest focus might be world-building, she was always able to score with her very imaginative ideas. And although I noticed some of the flaws you mentioned in her other work as well, I had a very enjoyable time twice, so I think I'm staying onboard with her.

I can definitely see the possibility of being able to pull more out of it than I was able to in that way. It's difficult, because even though the worldbuilding is undoubtedly interesting and imaginative, it just didn't click for me or keep me intrigued enough to carry the book as a whole.

I felt the same. The ideas and world were intriguing, but that was about it.

I was really wanting more from it - just felt so off and incomplete. Good to know I'm not the only one who was a bit disappointed!
