My cousin used to mow lawns in the 80’s and 90’s for a few bucks. He saw this one lady’s house and offered to mow it since her husband died. She didn’t have any money but she always made sure he had homemade chocolate chip cookies and milk waiting for him. He said he did it because it was the right thing to do.

When I was growing up people still used to know a lot of their neighbors, at least casually. It wouldn't have been unusual for neighbors to automatically step up to try to help where they could once they knew/realized an older and/or sick neighbor was in need. Or there would be boys like your cousin, out trying to earn an honest buck, but also with the heart to help out someone genuinely in need. I see how nice the next door neighbors yard is and it's a reminder of just how different people are now. Most kids feel too entitled to earn their own money that way, let alone help "out of the kindness of their heart". And the majority of people don't even know their neighbors next door and are far more inclined to complain than ever consider offering a hand. I was born in 69'... it's crazy and sad to see how much the world has changed during my lifetime, especially the last 16 since the advent of smartphones and social media.

BRAVO ! I watch a few different lawn guys. Only one episode showed a lady actually run out to the store and got him a few Gatorades and few snacks. I know AL does not want anything and sometimes the house owner actually after paying bills have very little but at least come out with a pitcher of water and ice. It is a small way to show your appreciation.

My neighbor had foot surgery, I mowed his yard on my side and his other neighbor mowed on her side. He didn't have to worry with it while he was recuperating. That's what we should be doing, not hiding in our houses.

In VA Beach code enforcement drove around giving out fines. No neighbor complaints needed. We got a warning when our mower was broke and Spring rains made the grass grow faster than our paychecks to fix the mower.

I'm an older lady. I pay to get my backyard mowed once a month. But I have a wonderful next door neighbour who mows my front yard and takes my heavy bins out each week. If it wasn't for his kindness it'd cost me more for the lawnmowing, and getting my bins to the sidewalk is very difficult, I have a bad back and a very steep driveway to drag the bins up to the kerb. His kindness and help are invaluable.

Good for your neighbor. I live on a street with a lot of elderly people, and since im still young (compared to them) I help where I can. A few other neighbors pitch in as well, to take care of lawns, garbage cans, etc. A community needs to support each other.

I own properties in USA, Canada, France, Italy, and Spain. All residential almost all are long term tenants too. I'm thankful for that. A lot of them are older folks. The one house in Spain had an older couple living in it. The husband died this past January, leaving his 84 year old wife behind. The property was becoming overgrown. A Spanish man, a version of you, contacted me, offering me what you offer people. Free lawn service. I said hell yes. But I also offered him one of the Italian homes (near Rome) to vacation in any time he wanted. It has been vacant off and on for years. Sent him the lock code. And now he's cleaned that property up. I just can't win with you generous people. I'm going to adopt that man.

When I was growing up, we had an elderly next-door neighbor. I was in charge of cutting our lawn and my mother told me to also cut the neighbor's property too. It was a small area, and it just became an extension of my front yard responsibilities. I was happy to do it.

Anytime there was a hurricane 🌀 watch for So. Florida, all the boys in our neighborhood would help put up their family shutters or wooden boards. When they finished that, they would go around the neighborhood and see if anyone needed help. Like if there was a home that was maybe a couple of younger women, or elderly individuals, or if someone lived alone. All of us teenagers would help them as much as we could (boarding up, moving loose items inside, setting up flashlights, anything portable with batteries, etc.)

My Dad was so proud of his yard. We had a widow who lived next door and he took care of her yard, it made his look great. Then the lady on the other side of him had a premature baby and her and her husband spent 6 years in hospitals with their son, my Dad took care of their yard and it was so beautiful. I would know because I was his next door neighbor and it was my son, his grandson who lived his entire life in hospitals. I was so grateful for him and his help with my yard and the love and support he gave us during a difficult time. I miss him deeply. Thank you Bladez for your service to your community

Spring and fall, my siblings, including their kids and grandkids, and I would gather at my mom's to trim branches, weed whip along the creek bank. We would clean out flower beds and plant bulbs and flowers. We would do any work she wanted done. It was outside work my parents did before my dad passed away. My mom mowed her own grass until a month before she passed away at age 84. One of the best parts of it all was spending the time with the family. The second best part was getting to eat mom's homemade beef vegetable soup and rhubarb ple after the work was done. I miss those days.

I used to shovel and sand my neighbor's wheelchair ramp in the winter. I knew they couldn't do it. I also bought all the fencing to put in a new fence for my neighbors because they were in their 80s. That way, we were both following city ordinance. They taught me how to plant tomatoes and lettuce and I took them some rhubarb and the lady made preserves with it. Can't beat that!

This probably is a home owners association (HOA), not the government. And the"fine" is really just the cost they get charged from a lawn mowing company to have them come clean up the yard. Back in the day (I'm 74yrs. old) the city or neighbors would have tried to help someone in this lady's situation instead of using it as an opportunity to raise revenue. City workers actually worked hard to "help" people, police helped you fix flats - if you ran out of gas, they gave you a ride to the nearest gas station and offered the use of a gas can they kept in their trunk. Now they are all about "enforcement" - traffic enforcement, code enforcement, building enforcement, zoning enforcement, instead of "helping" citizens, they are telling them what to do and punishing them if they don't comply, regardless of your situation. Thank the lord for people like this guy that are all about helping people.

Even in the '80s and '90s when I was growing up, if the community saw that someone was having a hard time with lawn care, home repairs, etc., we would get together and help rectify the situation. We would get together and work on rectifying the situation. The sense of community has gone out the window, and it's saddening.

The biggest difference is that you have to know your neighbor in order to care about them. Many people these days don't know their neighbor (beyond politely waving at them) let alone go out of their way to help. I had my truck break down in the middle of the road 3 or 4 years ago and didn't have my phone on me but luckily a cop happened to be driving by. As I tried to flag him down by waving my arms, I was surprised to see him look me in the eyes through his passenger window before driving past me and continuing on his way. I was honestly shocked because I had a handful of experiences with cops being real parts of the community when I was younger. Sorry about the rant but I was almost done before I realized and couldn't turn back 😆

There have been a bunch of changes. The two main ones are. Home ownership is extremely expensive and limited to high income earners if you can afford a home (now) you probably can afford land scapers, add to that that in the last 10 years 30 percent of existing homes have switched from owner occupied to rental so now you have landlords using landscapers (or renters). Because of this the days of the neighbor pushing the mower over to grandma who lives next door every once in a while is just over.

The street department has been working hard on our street to bring the water lines to code. There has been a lot of city machinery on the roads near our home. It is a dirty job, but we are so grateful for the upgrades. My daughter put a cooler of cold drinks and bottled water and electrolyte packets to add to the water. They have been very thankful. We live in a small town of roughly 25,000 people. It is nice to live where people look out for each other and care for and respect our street department workers.

My brother had a stroke a few years ago and is now wheelchair bound but while he was in the hospital I went to his home to make sure his place would be ready for his return. He's a bit of a hoarder so I ready for that but I didn't realize he's also a food horder and hates doing laundry, changing sheets, washing floors, dishes. I spent three days just going through for cupboards and closets collecting 3 bins of canned foods, sauces, pastas, dry goods etc that he's been collecting for 10+ years. Hundreds and hundreds of cans, bottles and pkgs. He had seafood in his frig that had expired before his stroke...and it took me 2 days of basking soda, soap and lots of airing just to save his frig. The entire thing, every shelf etc reeked but neither he nor I had the money for new frig. Two weeks to clear out his food hord, scrub shelves, toilets, floors, do months of laundry etc. If that poor woman has been hospitalized for most of a year the inside of her home probably didn't look much better than the yard and personally I'd appreciate having a clean, or cleaner, home and someone to shop, cook and do my laundry if I was still feeling weak and run down.

If the city knows a home is abandoned and no one is paying taxes, they won't bother sending anyone there to clean up the property bc they know they can't bill anyone. But if a little old pensioner goes in the hospital, they'll be quick to slap them with fines and fees and have a city worker over there to do a terrible job mowing for $500.

The cities are cash hungry jackals. Code enforcement is a scam for additional revenue. Now I have to worry about my yard, especially since I have several trees overhanging the sidewalk, but also what I put out for trash. They’ve got a goon inspecting the trash cans when they’re at curbside. If you get a ticket they hang on the can, the garbage truck won’t pick it up. The insanity is that if I could go out and rectify what’s written on the ticket before the truck gets there, they’ll haul it off. But since I’m not there when they pick up, I get to keep my full can and figure out what eco regulations I violated. Got a ticket for an Amazon bag in my recycle. I didn’t even know what classification of plastic it was. They say it’s single use plastic. How was I to know that? Fines can be pretty severe.

@@ROG958 there are not. i own/ manage rental properties and have had to deal wide code enforcement multiple times due to tenants not doing proper upkeep. its always a fix it notice to start. they always give you chance to get it cleane dup first. most of the times they dont even really fine you. they usually jsut send out city contractors to clean it up and just bill you for it

The son might also have health issues (like asthma, or something) that make it impossible for him to take care of the yard in the hot Florida sun. Just be thankful that Al is there to help out! My daddy raised me "right" - two things he always told me: "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all", and "before you judge others, walk a day in their shoes". Yesterday I hauled out some metal and broken items for metal collectors as today was garbage day. Woman passed away and kept her everything in a garage, shed and back yard. Front yard was a mess as was the back. Getting the property ready to sell and so much needs to be done but finally the lawns are done, flower beds clear of weeds and and solar lights and still more to do. Al Works like a beast. I took away my father's weed wacker battery as he keeps wanting to do the yard work and last week fell on the fresh cut lawn just walking the dog in the back yard. Al is a Blessing for those that need the help.

We have acreage property that when we bought it we took care of & maintained it (even in our 60s & 70s). Then hubby was diagnosed with recurring cancer that we thought he beat almost 20 yr earlier & now 2 yr later diagnosed with kidney disease & is now on dialysis because of the cancer & related drugs. We can no longer take care of our property like before. We have a guardian angel neighbor who comes over when he can & does with weed trimming & maintenance & mowing. He is a blessed angel. We used to help out seniors & never thought the shoe would be on the other foot & be the ones needing help because we'd been so independent & done everything ourselves our entire lives. But now we are so grateful to have our neighbor Joe's help & kindness beyond measure. Otherwise we'd have to sell our home because we're no longer able to care for it like in the past.

Code inspectors are great people. They just try to get the citizens to communicate, and things can be worked out. Without communication, things can go wrong. I used to work in my cities' Housing Codes department at the front desk. I learned a lot in 5 years there.
