Be polite but remember most molesters are family or family friends. My child’s grandfather told him to hug him to get a remote, I said whoa no we don’t trade affection for items.

"What if they never wanna hug?" Okay...? That's not a bad thing. We all have those creepy "where my hug at" people in our lives and it's like...go find your hug somewhere else, that's a YOU problem not a ME problem! I think it's important that kids understand their bodily autonomy as in "you can't make me do things I don't wanna do." It's one thing when it's parents or family (which I think is what they're talking about with rudeness) but you don't want kids thinking they're obligated to be physical in situations where they don't wanna be just because it's an authority figure.

My mom asks for a hug and if any of my kids or nieces/nephews say or shake their head no, she simply says "that's fine, you don't have to" and that's it. She doesn't want them to be uncomfortable and usually when the visit is over they decide to do it.

I agree with loni on this allowing kids to operate on their own time. Now I’m not saying to raise disrespectful kids because they do need guidance but in this aspect I feel kids can sometimes sense someone’s energy. I also believe that most kids especially toddlers are extremely shy and kind of keep to myself towards persons who they’re not familiar with and i honestly believe that’s a good thing which means they understand the concept of stranger danger and they don’t allow any and anyone to get in their personal space. Now I get the concept of respect and I guess that’s why parents urge their kids to hug someone when a hug is requested but I think even on the other end as an individual asking for a hug and noticing the child is more than hesitant you can be a bit understanding and maybe alright it’s ok can I get a high five tho

I have a child with ADD and as she was getting older I realized that she did not like being touched. [This is not just an ADD thing but in her case it amplified it.] She was very different from my oldest. With close family and strangers alike. Culturally we're used to hugging and giving quick pecks on the cheek but my youngest never warmed to that. I learned very quickly I had to respect what my child was not comfortable with. My mom being old schooled at first thought it was coming from a place of disrespect but over time she grew to understand her granddaughter's personality and respect her, as well as giving her time and space to warm up and show love in her own way. Children can be loving and respectful without pressing their bodies or having other people press their bodies against them. Or having to put their skin against someone else's. So I disagree with anyone or any parent forcing or making a child feel bad for not wanting or liking that close contact with other people. My daughter, in her own time, at her own pace, will come to me and give me a hug or I'll ask her for one and she will let me show her love in my love language, so no, it doesn't make her cold and disconnected over time. I think because we don't press the issue, it makes her feel safe and makes it easier for her to open up and be more physically affectionate. I absolutely disagree that just because someone is a grandma or a parent the child is automatically expected to hug an authority figure. No, means no, and that includes when a child does not want to be touched. Just like when a wife doesn't want to be touched by her husband and he doesn't have more claims to her because he's the husband (if she doesn't want to be physically touched you don't touch her). So, no, I disagree with Adrienne on this one.

I think the girls were missing the mark on this one. Anyone who was raised in the U.S.A and is now an adult was raised to ignore their own autonomy at a young age. It's a cultural thing here and it's not that well known yet. In all the truest friendships of my life, we were molested/sexually assaulted by other children as early as the age of 5. That stuff is real and we're still dealing with the aftermath. As parents we want to believe our kids are safe with family and at school but if parents dont step up and keep teaching their kids that YOU decide what YOU want to do with your body, how to respect that in other people as well... We wont break the cycle. Loni was closest here. Let the kid know their voice is important. Their bodies belong to them. When they feel safe, they'll decide who their gut tells them who they can trust and who they want to stay away from. Other people are not entitled to demand anything from you. Trust is earned.

So, I've been there where someone thought I was being rude or disrespectful because of my reaction when someone, usually a family member, touches/hugs me. I'm naturally not a touchy person, so hugging or someone putting their arm around my shoulder/waist makes me incredibly uncomfortable. I think that the child is entitled to have their own boundaries, just because their a child doesn't mean they don't know what they like or not. So maybe they don't want to be hugged. It doesn't matter if they're a family member or not. If a child does not want to be hugged, they shouldn't be forced to, or punished for not hugging the other party. Also, there's a reason why they don't want to hug someone. idk maybe just ask them afterwards nicely "why didn't you want to hug so-and-so." So I completely agree with Loni on letting the kid do it at their own time, it's not like it's the single only time you'll ever see this kid anyway, try for a hug another time.

I don't know what any of you guys feel, but in my experience, I usually always love hugging others even if it's my first time meeting them because it's usually in my friend or family group. I feel like it was a bit extensive in a way where the psychiatrist had said that it was bad and other things, but I have to agree that some people just don't like physical affection, and I get that! I feel it's most important to tell how you feel though so others who aren't so comfortable shouldn't do things they don't want. Children are slightly different since they do need to build character and meet new people, but if he or she says she's not comfortable with that particular person just yet, then the child doesn't have to hug whatever person he or she needs the hug.

All the ladies input were valid with regards to HUGS! First and foremost I think the child's comfort level comes first! Can remember to this day how scared I was when my dad would tell me to like or be nice to a person that I had never met before. ..ie.extended family ...member family friend... neighbor etc . Having said that I was also never raised with hugs touches affection etc .. therefore HUGGING felt very uncomfortable for me as I got older ...even to this day at age 65...as well past adult unhealthy relationships didn't help either! THEN... The RESPECT ... THEN ...the CULTURE thing.. Coz not Every child loved or appreciate EVERYTHING about the way they were raised/ growing up! Adrienne totally understand your mother's perspective....being a survivor myself! All about PROTECTION!!!

I have a story that came to mind when they were talking about forcing a child to hug someone. So, I was in high school and I’m with my friend Samantha and we go to her sister’s house. I’m not close friends with Samantha btw, but my cousin was dating Samantha’s brother so we started to hang out. I used to cheer with her when I was 5 but we were never close friends. When we go to her sister’s house, Sam’s young nephew was going around and kissing everyone on the mouth and then went up to me and did the same thing. Obviously I don’t think that his mom would allow him to just kiss a random stranger, but this was the first time I even met him I think. He was a toddler at the time as well. So when he tried to kiss me, I just turned my head a little and let him kiss me on the cheek instead. Was that rude or mean to do that? I wasn’t being angry or irritated at all, I was playing with him outside and he wasn’t upset by me turning my head either. What was weird and annoying is that Samantha acted like I was and acted like I broke his heart. Maybe I am just overly cautious, but I know that I personally wouldn’t want my child kissing random people like that, especially on the mouth. It’s just not sanitary. 🤷‍♀️

How about we simply just stop introducing our children to,”The weird creepy uncle, though?” Fact is, child molesters and sexual violators are way too protected in families and are allowed access to innocent children bc collectively the majority of family members of families are failing to expose predators while standing up for helpless children. It is our job to teach our children and protect them. Children have rights ✋too!

*Why nobody's talking about the ending?!!* *The midnight noises!!!* What y'all never heard somwthin' somethin' going down in the next room!!!? I used to live with my friend as housemates, and when she first had her bf I would be woken up to their noises in the middle of the night and it was kinda funny listening to them! Ngl, it's a turn on 😜😜😂 Not them. Just.... Sex noises. Lol
